Ghost Town
if you have a bit of time, check this out.. very sad story
a story about a town that one can ride through with no stoplights, no police and no danger of hitting any living thing

I was in Ukraine at the time of the accident too. I'm definitely gonna go visit that town when i can afford it. I think i'll actually give her a call and set up a two-bike roadtrip (i have her digits, long story). I'll definitely bring a good digicam with me, and maybe a biohazard suit so that i can get close to those radioactive fire engines and snap some pics of them too.
WOW. took me forever to read that...
very interesting. I remember the day when we were camping and my parents were listening to radio and it started to rain, they grabbed us and we drove away (I can't remember where) My parents were just catious, we were too far away from Chernobyl anyways.

It must be so creepy to ride through there and see no one...and to see the readings go up on the dosimeter, depending upon where you step.

Edit: in retropect, nothing in the world compares to what I just saw!. not even our empty mining towns, I've been to one (Elliot Lake) and even though it looked very similar, there was one huge difference, no one left personals behind. In this case, they left everything behind, and many lost thier lifes, which is the worst thing to leave behind.
On another note, the U.S. just decided to begin contruction on a new reactor, the first one to be built in canada or the U.S. since this disater.

I've been to more than a few ghost towns but that was just 
Reminds us all of just how fagile we all really are and how we should take care of our world...
I've seen about 5 different version of that site so far, each with more pictures or text than the other. This girl did an amazing job documenting her travel's through the "dead zone". So d!abolic, if you really do have her digits tell her thank you from me.
This is the most chilling picture I have ever seen from the chernobyl area:
I don't know why but it always sends chills down my spine.
I've been trying to find as much information about this disaster as possible. I was in South-Eastern Poland, about 600km from Chernobyl when it happened. I vaguely remember being forced to drink the bitter Iodine solution by my dad. Latelly I've also been wondering how this accident affected me, health wise. It's not an easy question to answer because much of what really happend, will never be known thanks to communism.
During my internet searches I stumbled across many interesting websites that I though some of you might enjoy as well:

Paul, here's another scary one. Feels like someone staring at you from a different world.
The pics of those guys steamcleaning contaminated parts are also disturbing. They're all dead men. Also, i'm sure you've seen photos of that giant lot where all the abandoned vehicles were left. Note how the hoods are open on nearly every one of them - the engines were removed and sold to unsuspecting people in other cities.
I was in Warsaw at the time this happend; and I remember I had to drink some stuff as well; just in case.
I found this VERY powerful. Thanks for the link - it certainly provided me with some much-needed perspective...
Wow, that was intensely sobering...thanks for the link. Makes you think.....imagine the dead zone if Pickering ever "rode the Demon"??
A ghost town of 40 thousand is one thing.....imagine all of Toronto completely deserted of human life. 
Granted I'd like to think our falesafes, procedures and technologies are much more advanced......let's hope

thanks for sharing the link, very powerful stuff. Can't help but feel so sad especially when I read the part about the old man who still lives there and refuses to leave risking death rather than abandoning a town that he grew up with and loves. 
I've seen that site a few times and it is very eerie.. the whole place is just there preserved, like soemthing out of a zombie movie
