Fuel cutoff at 190?

The freeway tonight was absolutely deserted. The wind was blowing from the back and i hit 190 in no time, but then acceleration sharply stopped. What exactly happened? Was it some kind of a safety fuel cutoff mechanism that kicks in at that speed? I felt a bit of a bump, and for a brief moment thought i may have popped a tire, which at that speed woulda been really bad news!

i noticed the same thing with my car at about 185km/h...

i see u are suffering the curse of the factory ECU settings.
it's to "protect" the engine. For it to be under warenty, the drivetrain should not be subjected to some conditions. They make sure that the drivetrain (engine & tranny) is not subjected to such conditions.... You can go to a few performance stores and they could edit ur ECU software but that costs money. Not a good idea unless u wanna race ur car.

There are factory instaled rev limiters and speed limiters. Rev limiters cut off fuel delivery to the engine when the engine revs into the redline area. Speed limiters cut off fuel delivery to the engine when a pre-defined speed is reached.

What likely happened is you hit the max speed the speed limiter allows for.

A word of warning: make sure you check the speed rating on your tires before trying to hit record land speeds with your vehicle. Here are the letter speed ratings for tires, which should appear on the sidewall of your tire:

R-106MPH
S-112MPH
T-118MPH
U-123MPH
H-130MPH
V-149MPH
W-168MPH
Y-187MPH
Z-187+MPH

#1 - you're racing your car all the time and you don't even know what an electronic limiter is?

#2 - I cannot believe you're posting this less than 2 days after your "cop" incident. You're just begging to lose your license.

I agree with you Aaron. This guy doesn't deserve to have a liscence in my opinion.

You put yourself in danger and you put others in danger and expect the cops not to do anything.

Seriously d!abolic, have you got nothing else to talk about? Oh wait.. Thailand. I wouldn't be surprised to see a "I got in a high-speed accident and survived but the people I rammed from behind didn't" thread from you in the near future.

Don't get me wrong eh d!abolic, my friend usually drives his old Z28 between 150-200 on the highway. The difference is that he's put about a thousand clicks on it and knows its ins and outs like the back of his hand. The guy does some dangerous shit but nothing that would ever make him lose control of the car, he's had it for over 5 years and never been in an accident.

You on the other hand are going way over the speed limit, don't look carefully enough for cops (when there's nobody on the road except one car following you, IT'S A COP), don't even know that your car is electronically limited and don't know the speed ratings on your tires or how to tell when one of them's been popped.

To put it bluntly, you're driving your car like it was stolen, without any regard for your own safety, the safety of others, or the mechanical health of the car! It wouldn't surprise me if you've already wrecked your suspension and shaved 3 or 4 years off the vehicle's lifetime. If your insurance company knew how you drove, your rates would triple. In short, it frightens me that I'm sharing the road with people like you.

#1 - read your car's manual, and #2 - get yourself a lot more driving experience before pulling shit like that.

#3 stop trying to overcompensate for a small penis on the road, and go risk your life on the racetrack.
at least there it will be you who dies, and not some innocent in your way.

meh...I'll leave my feelings on speeding out of this...suffice to say, hopefully this was when you were sober, on dry pavement, with no one else on the road, in a well-maintained vehicle.

many cars have fuel limiters built in...before I had my Talon, I drove a Focus...fuel cutoff was around 172 km/h, I think. It could be shut off with a chip upgrade or ECU re-flash. Not much point in doing that, IMHO...because when are you going to need it?

DigiNut, point taken. I'll check the ratings on my tires next time i step out of the house. Also, assuming it wouldn't be completely obvious, how would i tell if a tire has been popped? And what would happen if that occured at 130, 160 or 190 respectively? I'm all for getting myself properly educated on this, so if you've got any particular recommendations, fire away. This car is well maintained, but i don't particularly care about it right now since i'll be putting it up for sale in a few weeks. The new car though will be a whole other story, i'm gonna want to take really good care of it and make sure nothing bad happens to it. So i'd like to hear why you think i may have damaged my suspension on this one.

It depends on whether you pop a rear or front tire or both. It also depends on the vehicle and how fast you can react to the situation.

How will you know? It will sound like a gub shot going off followed by your car becoming extremely unstable. If you pop a front tire you might be able to steer the car in the right direction. Poping a rear tire is much more dangerous since you can loose traction in your backend thereby lossing control of the car.

I would say your chances of steering the car to a safe stop are good if you are going 120kph and under, again this depends on your vehicle and your skill as a driver.

Having a blowout at speeds higher than 120kph are extremely dangerous. Probability of surviving a blowout decreases as your vehicles speed increases.

Note to self: buy Z-rated tires before going so damn fast again.

To take your car over 140km/h on the highway is completely stupid. I didnt think this when i first started to drive, but 5 years later here i am with 5 speeding tickets, and on my last straw. If i get another speeding ticket i wont even be able to get insurance in the province. To top it off, im paying $3800 for 6 months to be insured on a 2001 Sunfire GT. So yeah, keep racing your cars boys....its worth it, right?

Actually those tire speed ratings arent really set in stone. Even if your tire rating is below the speed you are travelling at, it doesnt mean something is bound to go wrong.

Tires are made with a large safety margin. Even if you are driving at a much faster speed than the tires are designed for, nothing will happen. They might blow only if you are on a track and are travelling at a much greater speed for an extended period of time.

P.S. It is quite easy to disable the fuel-cut off. However with your car it probably takes it a while to get to 190 anyways
