General Anaesthetic

Anyone had a general anaesthetic for dental work before? Whats it like?

Posted by snowman99 on Apr-06-2004 10:27:

um, well havent had it for dental work, but for when i broke my finger I did, but I obviously dont remember much. I think they put one drug into me that made me sleepy, dont remember how that affected me, then a pain killer one ( i think ) which they said would basically be like getting really drunk. Then the ceiling started moving in circles and that was it til I woke up. I'd heard scare stories of how it was dangerous and stuff, but I didnt even have a headache. So you should be ok.

Ive had one too, about 7 years ago when I had my tonsils out. But I was just wondering if the one for the dentist would be any different.

I got it before for dental work when i was a wee nipper, cant remeber much about it though, on another note my dentist also got sacked for sexual abuse

if you've ever done ket tell them, it builds a resistance up to general anaesthetic

When i was getting teeth taken out some years back, the dentist injected my gum with this stuff, then about 2 mins later the lower half of my face felt like a baloon, they then took my teeth out and i didnt feel much (but got to hear the great noises of a tooth being pulled out from your jaw/gum *crunch* )

It wore off a few hours later and my gums hurt like fuck.

i dont really see the point in a general anaesthetic for having teeth out. not only are there risks involved with any general, you also usually feel really shit afterwards. many dentists are also very shit at doing it as they are not fully fledged anaesthetists, and thus ppl have actually never woken up..

waste of time/effort, if you can deal with dribbling for a few hours then just have a local

omg the dribbling!

so embarassing, dont wear an easily dribble-affected top when u have that done

please excuse my stupidity...but whats the difference between local and general?

(im guessin general completley knocks you out but local doesnt?)

Posted by dj_mdma on Apr-06-2004 15:41:

yep.

local anaesthtic only affects the closely surrounding area of the injection, whilst a general anaesthetic knocks you completely out by acting on the central nervous system

whereas ket is a dissociative anaesthetic

didnt they stop letting dentists use general anesthetic as too many people never woke up from having their teeth taken out coz the dentists wernt trained to use it properly.

I had General for when they lasered bone out of my nose, they just injected me with this milky looking stuff and told me to count to 10, i got to 6 if i remember

Posted by magnasoma on Apr-06-2004 19:56:

Yeah i can't see why a dentist would need to use a general, unless he was really going to town on your mouth.

Ketamine was originally designed and is still used, as a general anaesthetic. A mate of mine who was a big ket cainer, was administered ketamine as a GA for an op she had to have on her hand, or arm, cant remember which. Anyway, she just quit ket for 6 months or so and she was fine for the op.

I always thought ket was a tranq rather than an anaesthetic.

Im having one of my Wisdom teeth from my right hand side taken out, plus some other stuff done that I dont understand/cant remember exactly what the dentist said.

I dont think its that major of a procedure, however I have a phobia of the Dentist and feel no same in admitting it. Its not just a slight fear, but unparallel abject terror. Ive had two dentists, my first and the current one. The reason that Im so scared is because of the way that my first one treated my mum and I. Anyway, they are not doing it at my current surgery, but are referring me to a bigger one which specialises in giving generals and more complex procedures etc.

wisdom teeth can be a bit of an arse to get out, so if you have a phobia of dentists then a general is the sensible way forward

I had a general just over a year ago for an accident on my arm. I was really nervous to start with becuase i didn't like the idea of being knocked unconcious while i just sat there and unable to do anything about it.

It wasn't too bad, you get like an anti sickness thing first then the milky stuff, they say count back from 10, but all that I thought about was trying to stay concious.

You can feel quite drousy afterwards and i was sick. But its such a cmommon practice there is nothing to worry about. But I agree its odd to have it for dental work.

Yeah its used now as a horse tranquilizer, but it was still designed and is still used as a GA.

Probably slightly diffrent properties/quantites.

Posted by swisstoni on Apr-07-2004 18:43:

i love GAs. love waking up from them even better.

I have worked in a theatre for 3 years where we put people to sleep for fucking huge operations dozens of times a day, and every dentist who puts a person to sleep using general anaesthetic MUST have an anaesthetist present by law. on top of that, they require licenses that can only be obtained by certain people and equipment being present in every single surgical procedure that takes place. this is nonsense about people never waking up. not now, these days anyway

They stopped using Ket as a general for adults because people started complaining about the wired visuals. They still use it on babies and infants apparently because they cant complain!
