im trying to make a mix. would a compressor help out on sound quality?

A Compressor would help you reduce the overall range of a sound. A compressor, oddly enough [ SORRY bad joke ] compresses the range your sound travels. When you apply a compressor to a sound you can help it fit better into the overall mix by adjusting the way its played.. You'll be able to can hear it now in the mix better and without the sound being blown out or, most importantly loosing tone and the feel of the sound.

For example, if you have a bass line that sounds "muddled" and doesnt seem to stand out in the mix, you can apply compression to give it a better fit into your song. That way you wont loose the actual sound of the bass line. Meaning the sound wont change from a bass line to something else, mid range, totally different bass sound, etc. but it sounds clearer.

That makes sense?

I've been wondering about this also. Are there any real time software compressors? If so what are some good ones. If not, hardware wise what are some of hte better ones available? TIA - tempest
