-- Paul van Dyk - Reflections 2x12" Vinyl Release

Paul van Dyk - Reflections 2x12" Vinyl Release

Deserves a thread for the remix of Buenaventura alone.
But having Reflections (the single) on vinyl is quite nice too. That's Life is a good cut; Kaleidoscope is decent.

The Crush remix is identical to the Paul van Dyk Remix from the Vandit release. Time of our Lives is just a tweaked version of the PvD Club Mix (basically an added guitar riff).

But no original mix of Nothing But You! Gah dammit!

(Check out full samples at www.only-djs.com)

I too agree with your comment on Reflections. I really like the track Kaleidoscope a lot myself...

Nah. He likely knew months ago. Besides, he's not as much a Vandit whore these days, certainly not on TA at least.

weeeeee, nice sampler!. Overall this one is great, all the tracks are excellent. You know, i'd have enjoyed all this in the album instead, but well .. that's how marketing works I guess.

Buenaventura (Reflections Vinyl Remix) 9/10
Way back from El Zurdo, this track distinguished itself as the best of the album (at least IMO ), and now this remix has gave it the little push and energy it needed to be a great track. The track had a total make over resulting on a faster and danceable version, without losing the uplifting elements that made the original so good.

Crush (PvD Album Remix) 8/10
Well, yet another remix of crush. This one is quite a lot darker than the others but it's also a good one to include on a set. It might not be the one that makes people go nuts in the floor, but it'd sure keep them up if you combine it with another kicker.

That's Life (PvD Remix) 9.5/10
Wow, this one is my favourite of the sampler. Although many may say that the vocals in there are a bit awkward and simply should be ripped to make a dub, they actually complement the track perfectly. It's true those vocals aren't the best ever, but still, they do a good job on the track, otherwise the melody's riff would turn quite annoying as it keeps repeating itself all over the track. Excellent remix!.

Reflections (Club Mix) 7/10
Well, this one is just identical to the one in the album, except it doesn't have those background sounds the album version has in the beginning, and also that it's just a few seconds longer. I didn't quite like this one in the album, and don't quite like it here either, this is just a sort of filler.

Nothing but you (Berlin Remix) 8/10
Well, this is a breaks mix of NBY, it's quite nice although for this time the majority of us have already moved on from it. Still, it's a nice one for a breaks mix, and it's quite cheerful.

Kaleidoscope (Vinyl Mix) 7/10
Another one that's identical to the album version, except that you now have it on a vinyl . This is the one that resembles Autumn a bit on its bassline and melody instruments, but still, I don't quite like it.

Time of our lives (UK Club Mix) 7/10
This mix is just a re-arranged version of TOOL. The vocals were just put earlier in the track, and it has some slight changes that umm ... just make it sound weird. It's not a big of a change really, it's like you'd have taken the track, shaked it a bit and ended up with some pieces on different places.

Like a Friend (Vandit Club Mix) 8/10
Well, I gotta say that I didn't quite like this track when I listened to it in the album. The lyrics weren't quite appealing to me, and the rhythm was simply boring. In this version the bassline has been replaced with one that's a lot stronger and energic, resulting in a lot more enjoyable track which could as well fit on the beginning of a set. Nice Work.

Overwall, the sampler gets a 9/10 from me

Buenaventura Remix// is fuckin sick. I absolutely love the intro and cannot get over it yet. so goooooooood. I didnt think this chillout track could be turned out into the monster it is now. wtf

That's Life Remix// is ok. sounds good in a club but that's it. I preffer the original album version. More house and vocals are way much better.

Crush Remix// is the same PVD RMX from the single vinyl release with an edited buildup. Paul replaced it with the album's version.

Time Of Our Lives Re-Edit// is nice. same old intro wiht new elements. The guitar riff in the middle is great. Paul played this at Space in march and I was really surprised. Sounds great !

Like a Friend Club Mix// sucks to hard. Definitely a terrible track. I do not like.

Kaleidoscope Vinyl Mix// WTF?? I thoguht Paul would be less lazy and actually make a remix of this. the slacker just extended the intro and added a shittty outro ? this is bad. :S

NBY Berlin Mix// alredy had this from the member page. not really to keen on it. I need the original, it is the best!

Reflections Club Mix// kinda cheesy / annoying. Do not like either.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

I really like Kaleidoscope and the breaks remix of Nothing but You, and the samples of Bueneventura (reflections vinyl remix) sound ace. I'm going to buy this pronto. Does anyone know if it will be released on 3xlp or more, or just the 2xlp ?

Just two sir. .. And I really hope Like A Friend (Vandit Club Mix)

is as good as the PvD remix. That tune was a real gem.

Ah Arturo its good to see some honest non-bias PVD reviews from you these days. I have to agree with you on every comment you said.

You trait0r... get out of here :P. You don't deserve PvD's name

even remotely associated with yours. I'm the official groupie

now :P. Overall, this sampler 0wns. Favorite tunes consist of:

01. Buenaventura (Reflections Vinyl Remix)

03. That's Life (PvD Mix) (Although I thought the album version was MUCH MUCH better)

04. Reflections (Club Mix) (My favorite track on teh sampler)

05. Nothing But You (Berlin Mix) (Sick breaks mix... way better than cirrus')

06. Kaleidoscope (Vinyl Mix) (Mad relaxing tune... gets b0ring after awhile *yawnnnnnnnnnnnn*)

08. Like A Friend (Vandit Club Mix)

I now have the phrase *OMFG PvD* and/or *AWWWW PvD* patented... so

if any of you decide to use it, i'll have to take legal measures

against you :P.

.. /reZ ..

wtf are you on the breaks in berlin mix are so basic its even hard to call it a breaks mix..

the cirrus remix however was a true masterpiece in all aspects. Intresting breaks, very well implemented vocals, effects.. the whole atmosphere in the mix is what made it the best tune on NBY 12" for me.

berlin mix: 5/10
cirrus mix: 9/10

and about the vinyl sampler: Im really dissapointed.. I agree with almost everything arturo said, but I dont really like the bueanaventura remix too.. its nice to have kaleidoscope on vinyl though... but all the tracks sound very basic to my ear.. I mean he couldhave easily made them in 1998. Talk about progression as an artist, eh? and why oh why wasnt spellbound on? I think its going to be the next release and he didnt put it on so ppl would still buy that one too..

You're the first person I've come across who's had a postive take on

Cirrus' Break remix. I honestly feel that it's just as basic, if not

MORE basic than PvD's Berlin mix. I do, however, agree that

Spellbound should have been included in the 2x12". And what's up

with the Original version of "That's Life" not being included? The

vocals and synths were structured in a much better fashion than the

PvD mix. The synths were intoxicating, it was one of the tracks I

had on heavy rotation while listening to Reflections. Oh well,

we should have discovered this a long time ago by now: PvD DOES NOT

CARE about what his fans think should be incorporated in his music

packages.

Just my take on things..

Buenaventura and That's Life are both fantastic. The rest are a bit shit tho. And I wanna know what has happened to the "Tougher Mix" of Kaleidoscope that was listed on pvd.de for like a day. Also no PvD - Working either. Whole sampler is a bit shit really. nevermind. Hopefully after PvD has helped out Jan with her album we'll get some good remixes from him, which imo is what he does best.

Posted by Tranz on Apr-18-2004 04:11:

That's Life is a nice track... I haven't given any of Paul's work a listen until this sampler. Some decent stuff on there, to my surprise

The release has some kewl tunes... I fell in love with the Album mix of Crush.

Listening to the CD version, identical except mixed in...

its fucking mint, go out and find it and buy it

-from a pvd fan that thought Reflections was the best album

but seriously, go get it. Great stuff. Don't know why people didn't like Reflections.

BTW, gonna buy it if it ever comes over to the US (which I think it is)

Listening to TOOL now:

WTF WHAT HAPPENED TO THE VOLUME OF THE GUITAR RIFF???
so freakin low!
i like the one in the sets better, or is it because mine is the CD version?

Because there is so much better music out there. Reflections i give a 5/10.

Posted by breslin on Apr-21-2004 11:08:

Love the whole package.

He gave 'Like a Friend' the once over that it badly needed. 'Kaleidoscope' is growing on me all the time. The remix of 'Thats Life' is good also but i wish he had kept that techno element in it, that was on the original version. I had got sick of TOOL but im starting to like it again.

I'd give the package as a whole 8/10.
