Which professional North American sport has the best playoffs?

With the NHL playoffs being in full swing, I thought I would pose this question.

Personally I think the NHL has the best playoffs. Every year it's very exciting and it is just unbelievable how much players manage to elevate their games for this. A true example of sport IMO.

Baseball is the only other sport that comes close IMO.

NFL is okay sometimes.

NBA is a joke.

What do you think?

The NFL has the best.lose once and your gone.
The only sport that needs a 7 game series is baseball, because of the pitchers.
I dunno why the other sports need 7 game series, other than the obvious reason which is ticket sales .

bull-shit.

NBA Playoffs are always just exciting as MLB Playoffs or the NFL PLayoffs.

I never thought the NHL playoffs were that exciting? Why? Because it's not that popular in america except the NHL finals. I guess I'm pretty biased since I live in a city that doesn't celebrate hockey that much compared to our northern neighbors, but I don't find it as exciting as football or basketball. It's like soccer with sticks. Soccer itself isn't exactly that exciting because your just watching shots and misses until someone scores. Hockey is though exciting to watch the rough play, I'll that at least. but I get that same amount watching football.

NFL Playoffs are always my favorite to watch, every game is always exciting and antiscipating. Every game is scouted heavily, produced and promoted a ton. Nothing beats it imo since it's one-game elimination.

NBA Playoffs are just as exciting because the level of basketball being played. The toughest, most challenging games of basketball are always the playoffs. All NBA superstars have made their names in the playoffs. I've never been more excited, more thrilled after some of the most intense and insane plays during the playoffs, especially game-winning shots(wasn't those two last shots in portland by kobe fucking amesome? don't tell me they weren't)

I guess I'm biased because I love basketball more then any sport. I find football more exciting during the playoffs, but basketball is my true love. So much action, athleticism.. Best athletes in the world are basketball players. Don't give me bull-shit, because it's the truth.

MLB will always be good, but since the yankees sweep their way to the world series every year i've been less impressed.. God damn socks, beat them yanks for once.

hockey and by far...

I can't stand american football nor basketball... so annoying and pretentious.

Baseball is cool, sometimes, but can be verrrry boring.

Posted by SpecialEd on Apr-19-2004 05:46:

god damn canadians and their hockey

Posted by malek on Apr-19-2004 07:30:

for baseball to be more fun, they should double the number of teams going to the playoffs... at almost mid-season we already know who's going to the playoffs and there's less intrest following the game.

MLS

PLANET FOOTBALL!

Nothing's even close to hockey. Maybe not in all these warm climate expansion cities, but look at the Toronto Ottawa series teams like Montreal and Boston that actually have a long history and the fans not only support the team but are rabbid about it. Those series are unbelievable. Only thing that comes close in my mind is an AL final between the Sox and the Yanks again..

Basebal by far...

Ayoyye mais les expos font encore po all en srie cette anne...

Well - you can bet your ass I'm gonna get drunk tonight as well! (The game ended 4 am over here, so I have to wait a another few before I can open my first beer of celebration ) Would have been so much sweeter to be in Montreal though

That's exactly the enthusiasm that makes Montreal great. God, I'd give almost anything to be at game 7 of Toronto and Ottawa, you think Montreals funny lol....both towns will be in riots me thinks, no matter who wins.

BTW go Canadian teams this year!

Posted by th0m on Apr-20-2004 14:40:

I'm gonna go NBA all the way here. Having just one game in a play-off round for basketball would give very skewed final results.

Basketball is extremely FUN during the playoffs when you are actually there, and rooting for your favorite team. Baseball can be fun, and hockey can be as fun as basketball because of the contact and fights that happen.

The NFL I think is most nail-biting.

"One chance
One opponent
One play at a time
You win your the best
You lose your not."-Joe Thiesman

The NHL is as unpredictable as anything. A team's down 3-1 and they roar back to win in seven.

MLB is so so, but you never know what might happen.

Obviously this thread isn't what sport has the best playoffs, its more like "what is your favorite sport and that is the best playoffs".

Of course we are gonna find the sports we don't like to have good playoffs because we don't like the sports.

For example:
I hate hockey so of course im gonna think they're playoffs suck no matter if their playoff system is great(i know nothing about their playoff system).

My favorite sport is basketball but I think it shouldn't be a 7 game series I think it should be more like the college basketball system where you have a bracket. Best teams get the highest seeding.

Sometimes I can watch football and their system is the simplest, you lose and your done. However this doesn't really show who is the best team. It just shows who is the best on that one day.

Baseball to me is very boring because it takes so long between pitches and the players just seem out of shape and lazy to me and the whole strike thing in the 90s really turned me off. They're playoffs are way too long as well, do you really need 7 games in any sport to determine who's better? Maybe 5 but even thats pushing it, I'd say 3 games.

Exactly. Even though baseball is my least favorite sport out of my big 3 (NFL, NBA, MLB), I still believe the playoffs are the best, mostly due to last October. I've never had so much fun and got so wound up watching the playoffs than I did last year.

Posted by biznology on Apr-21-2004 17:07:

Of course I am biased,

But I still contend that the NHL is best. ANY hockey playoffs are great, including the World Championship - tho the US doesnt really take that very seriously even in hockey circles.

Why?

Because people who havent watched a single regular season game will come watch the playoffs - its a whole new season and game when they begin.

Baseball? If you have an allegiance to one team perhaps - but then again the Yankees will prolly win, and the strongest allegiances are with teams that almost never get all the way (Boston, Cubs).

Football? Again you largely have to pay attention during the regular season, and playoffs are nailbiting due to the one loss thing - but theyre also really short compared to other sports unless your team goes all the way.

Basketball? Likely the sport other than *football*(soccer) here even MORE popular outside of the US than inside - just check sales revenues and the flood of foreign players into the league. My issue? NBA players are the top of the heap - but most of them wont even run up and down the court until the playoffs! March Madness is a better indicator of a real competition with hungry players that scrap and fight for wins.

I think its odd that soccer/football and hockey are two pretty popular sports around the world - the play is largely similar, and yet the US shuns both. It doesnt really make any sense as American's are supposed to be competitive and confrontational. I guess we just get to make up other professional sports by which we set the rules...I dunno|

baseball is NOT a sport.

repeat:

baseball is NOT a sport.

no other sport besides Fotbal (Soccer, for the twits out there)

can even compare to Hockey.

Basketball is for puss. draw the foul? wtf? how about drew blood? = 4min double minor. the guy with the ball gets away with murder in that sport nowadays. can't play defense because you cant touch the guy = puss.
American Football: take off their helmets that they so often use as weapons to crack spines, and then we'll see how hard those "though guys" hit eachother. + it's been done: its called Rugby

Posted by TAnt on Apr-23-2004 18:36:

I prefer watching Hockey over any of the other sports..

please include your reasoning why hockey and soccer(yeah im a big twit) are the best sports in the world? I need a good laugh today.

I love football(NFL, CFL) but I dont like the 1 game go home way.
NHL playoff are the best, and I dont even like hockey.
