How Long?
I myself only got seriously addicted to trance this time last year, i have since then got decks (6months after my most memorable and 1st clubbing night with trance for years) and now nearing 150 peice of vinyl.
I have so little history in the music (i was clubbing back in 98-01 but never really paid attention just danced), coupled with a short term memory problem for names, and an interest across several of the trance genres, it seems to result in my mixes lacking in flow (let alone good mixes, all but a few that I knew before even trying to mix them that they would work.) It would appear that having a serious number of years of listening behind you to be highly beneficial.
Therefore:
How long were you listening to tunes before you decided to delve into dj'ing?
3-4 years. started a gradual thing and had a break in the middle to go explore hip hop but found that i prefer dance music. now ive been djing for 3-4 years so its been a while.....maybe i should do something else im only 21 after all
3 years
I started buying randam dance albums during 2000-2001 when i was about 15 and quite liked them...was mostly the cheesy MOS and judge jules type albums and i generally started to like dance music. Then shortly after i heard tunes like jan johnston - flesh (tiesto mix) and other tiesto stuff and became an instant tranceaddict
. Im 18 now and just got my first set of decks right at the start of this year...so about 3 years.
5-6 years. I couldn't think about DJ'ing cause I used to live in some poor countries, but I still listened to techno and trance there. Now when I finally got a chance, I got seriously into it.
i was into the music for around 3 years before i finally decided to get decks and learn to spin. Before the 3 years, it was all about 'discovering' my musical taste n affiliation.
i still listen to a fusion of genres but trance always does it best for me.
about a year of solid addiction
Started DJing before trance came about... it just seemed like the natural progression of what I was doing at the time. It's actually weird having seen trance grow the way it has, but it's also nice to look back and think that you have been part of that making people dance and be happy.
Loved music all my life.
Nem
yeah i have been listening 2 trance/techno for a good 5-6 yrs and really started paying attention about 3-4yrs ago when i started clubbin a lot. then slowly started to notice djs fuckin up once in a while in clubs or parties with some really bad mixin skills:::::> i was like wtf .
my listening habbits helped me out a lot (all da old skul stuff or some nice house/ trance) .i have a passion for higher BPM tracks and i thought why not spin my own shit n then started spinin my technics since last 420 of 2k3 n i am 23 so no big deal.....hanh!
good thing i am doin pretty good in mixin/skratchin and da problem i have is dat i don't have enough records to fuck with as i am a poor fuckin Dj.
yeah it definetly helps u if u been listening for a long time.
i was into it for about a year before i got my decks. although i only ever listened to single tracks not sets, i think flow etc is something that comes naturally so just practice and you will get the hang of it.
A quality addiction to trance for 2.5 years led me to getting decks and I hope to become big with DJing and producing trance. I want to give back to the lovely music that I love so much.
About a year and a half.
Started clubbin' in '98...Didn't get into DJin' til about late '99/early '00. I as on Cds first then made the switch a year late to vinyl and I've never looked back since.
I first started out listening to bits of electronica (well, I suppose it was called techno first...) about 7 years ago. Dominator anyone? Hehe.
Over the years I gradually picked up the odd compilation CD (i.e. Euro Dance Pool XXVI etc. type stuff), from which trance gradually evolved. The two things that completely sold me on trance was the Slinky - Factor 3 compilation and Paul Oakenfold - Live at Creamfields '99.
I started experimenting with digital mixing approximately 3 years ago, and decided to buy turntables a little over a year ago. May even take a shot at producing once I'm done University, but I probably won't have the free time to do so...
It was about 10-11 months before I started buying vinyls.
I'd say about 2-3 years, but it was a gradual thing.
Hahaha, I think my first true encounter that hooked me to electronic was Smart E's way back in the day. I was in the 6th grade, so that must have been about 13 or 14 years ago. They had that song Sesame's Treat which was popular at the time. I bought the cd, and ever since have been into the whole scene.
I guess it was more like 12 years ago since it came out in 1992. What a cheesy song, but hey, they pretty much started the jungle scene (even though I am not into that).
2 years
i had a simular experience to dirk w. I first got into electronic music around the 6 or 7th grade. I heard Robert Miles "Children" playing on my walkman somewhere around chicago while driving to minnisota. From that point on i was obsessed w/ electronic music. Also i've been spinning for around 3.5 years; and spent the most $$$ this past year now that im out of high school.

| Originally posted by Dj Flesch I don't think that history has anything to do with it, honestly. You need more experience as a Dj in picking tunes that go well together. When you buy music, don't buy music one or two tracks at a time. If you already buy in bulk, then listen to how similar the tracks sound and buy tracks that go well together. You can certainly buy classic tracks left and right, but there is no guarentee that they will go well together. Try listening to several of the mixes on the vinyl and see if changing mixes might help. If not then before you buy, relisten to the tracks and figure out if they have a good chance at flowing well together. This is a skill that I've said before can be just as hard as learning how to master beatmatching and phrasematching. |
i was into the music for about 6 years before i got my decks, i always fancied it and i used to do a lot of digital mixing before i had my decks.
been listening for about 5 years now, only really started getting in to it in the last six months though. Wanted to try mixing for a couple of years, but didn't want to lay out the money, when i wasn't sure if i was able or not. Will get decks soon
