Calgary vs. Detroit - Round 2 NHL Playoffs

This thread needed to happen, so I figured I'd start it =P

My prediction is Red Wings in 6, as I think the Flames are pretty injured after the first round and will have trouble facing the incredibly talented, and more importantly, incredibly experienced Wings. That said, I think Kipper is a lot better than Giguerre, and we all saw what he did to Detroit last year, so the Flames can definitely come out on top if they can remain injury free and keep getting big plays from their big players.

Let the worthless speculation begin!

Posted by j_spot on Apr-20-2004 07:14:

Ill make final prediction when I see the lineups on Thursday
but right now..I think were too banged up for the next series.

I have a feeling that kipper will end up on the highlight reel ALOT both making saves, and being beat in this next series.
I think Detroit in 6(if the flames dont get healthy)
If we do get healthy, and stay that way, then I change my vote to Flames in 7.

Detroit isnt as hard hitting as Van. They will skate around..should be interesting to see how it goes.

Posted by Magimaster on Apr-20-2004 09:17:

Detroit has both massive depth and massive experience.

Calgary's ace in the hole is Kipper. If he can pull a Giguere they might be able to stretch this out to 6 games, MAYBE 7, but after the war against Vancouver I don't know if they have enough to take this series.

Posted by DjCommisad on Apr-20-2004 09:46:

detroit in 6. calgary has a lot of heart, but detroit has a lineup that can really only be outscored by colorado. (i say this loosely as its a questionable SUGGESTION)

i think detroit will learn from vancouver and know the best thing is, is to put bodies in front of kipper SMARTLY, and take lots of close shots. point shots rarely beat him.

I see the grind line of Detroit (Maltby, Holmstrom, McCarty) doing a lot of damage to Kipper's crease. Detroit in 6.

Posted by TrancEuphoria on Apr-20-2004 19:05:

Detroit has so much depth compared to Calgary. It is going to be a long shot for Calgary to win this one, plus as mentioned before the injuries for Calgary are not going to help.

I will still be cheering loud for the Flames, and hoping they can pull it off. GO FLAMES GO!!

Calgary in 7

Even though Calgary is banged up and injuries don't help a team, I don't think it's as detrimental as most may think. As long as Kiprusoff and Iginla are healthy, the supporting cast must only buy into the system and understand their role. Sutter keeps it simple. Excessive talent is not required.

I can't wait until the senior citizens of Detroit start crying because the Flames aren't respecting their elders. I hope they break Yzerman, Hull or Shanahan..maybe all three.

Curtis Joseph...has he played 20 games this season?

I say the series follows much the same path as Vancouver-Calgary and the Flames are victorious.

Flames Forever!

Calgary in 7... have faith

Posted by j_spot on Apr-20-2004 23:12:

we all posted at the same time, and now detroit has 3 threads.
whoops.

I deleted mine, its better if they come here.

And my prediction is Detroit win in 5.
Hopefully I will be proven wrong as to who the winner will be .

Detroit in 5, they have way to much talent for Calgary to handle.

Posted by kokanee on Apr-21-2004 02:25:

Wings in 6 - I see guys like mentioned above, the Grind Line, Hatcher, and Chelios really pushing the Flames players around - unless Simon and Gauthier don't come back, I can't see anyone in Calgary answering to Hatcher's size.

its wierd that detroit is playing the western conf even though they are eastern

Posted by FattyFats on Apr-21-2004 05:01:

I went to the Wings/Flames game at the 'Dome a month ago and watched as the Flames were simply outclassed. But the playoffs are a different season...
I give the Flames a slight edge in goal and work ethic, but that's it.

We got nothin' to lose. Flames in 7.

GO Flames GO!

I want to see

CGY vs COL
MTL vs TOR

I'll settle I guess for TB vs TOR or CGY/DET vs COL/SJ

AT LEAST NO MINNESOTA, NO ST LOUIS, and NO NEW JERSEY

woohoo!

i was gonna stay away from the hockey thread but

well im about as big as a wings fan as they come and in the openning round the wings totally overwelmed a team built just like calgary called nashville, the wings can roll 4 lines and it wil prove too tough for a banged up calgary team, the wings are for real this year and they learnt alot from the early exit last year, wings in 5 or 6

Posted by Dj Dovla on Apr-21-2004 06:00:

congrats to calgary beating my home team ...

but i hope they destroy detroit ,

Umm, I don't know what series I was watching, but the Wings got pwned in games 3 and 4. Proves that speed > experience.

If the Wings can keep the Flames to their speed (Be prepared to see the Grind Line alot.... and you forgot to put Draper in the grind line post ) then they will win. If not, Calgary will shell them.

Another way Calgary could win is the same way Anaheim beat us last year. Giguere (or however you spell it) only saw about 15-20 shots a game (despite the fact the wings took >50) because the defensemen would drop down to block most of them. While Giguere was insanely good when he needed to be, I credit their victory to all of the players who would sacrifice their body for the team.

I still think the series can go either way. Whomever wins the first game will probably win it.... 6 games, I pick Detroit (Home Ice in the first game)

I'm a Colorado fan so I really hate the Wings, but I'd still like to play them in the western finals, even if there's a better chance for us to lose.

I forgot Draper on the grind line, but who did I include that shouldn't have been there?? Holmstrom?? Is it Draper, McCarty and Maltby then??

Posted by Miss Lizzie on Apr-21-2004 19:48:

Talking

I'm gonna be a rebel and say Detroit in 5, and nothing against Calgary... I'm also going for Colorado ... Either way there is gonna be some good hockey coming our way!

Yes, the grind line is Maltby, Draper, and McCarty.

Holmstrom sometimes is on it, but he mostly plays with Yzerman and Shanahan.

I would like to see Colorado-Detroit, but I can't look past Calgary.

Posted by TranceForever on Apr-21-2004 23:27:

Well no matter who we're playing im always gonna back my boys.
Detroit has a great team with a great proven goaltender, but as weve seen in the past before, any team can win if the're goalie gets hot.
We have kipper and he hasn't settled into a great game yet, but if he starts playing like he can then look out Detroit.
Another thing is that Iginla isn't some small european superstar, hes a homegrown Canadian power forward. You hit him and he plays harder, and he showed last game he can step it up tremendously when it counts.

I truly believe that Calgary can win it in 6!!!

GO FLAMES GO!!!!!!!!
