Baby walkers made illegal in Canada

I know this might not be news to some but for what it's worth:

Ottawa banning import, resale of baby walkers
Last Updated Wed, 07 Apr 2004 18:31:17
OTTAWA - The federal government is imposing an outright ban on the import or sale of baby walkers, making Canada the first country to make the devices illegal.

The ban also includes the resale of walkers at flea markets and garage sales.

Health Minister Pierre Pettigrew is scheduled to make the announcement on Wednesday.

The devices are designed for babies who can sit up, but not walk on their own. Health Canada says the baby walkers can tip down stairs, or allow a child to reach dangerous items such as cooking pots.

A review of Canadian hospital admissions between April 1, 1990, and July 25, 1992, found 436 children under the age of about 18 months had been injured in walkers. Most suffered soft-tissue injuries, concussions, burns or fractures.

Other researchers have estimated that a full third of all babies using walkers will be injured. The devices allow them to travel quite a distance in a short period of time before parents realize they are out of reach.

Since 1989, retailers have obeyed a voluntary ban on selling baby walkers, and no new models have been manufactured in Canada since then.

The federal government is bringing in tougher rules because more imported baby walkers have been reappearing in the marketplace in recent years, and parents don't seem as aware of the dangers as they once were.

Sure, let's blame baby-walkers for the irresponsibility of the parents. Not that I care about baby-walkers. Children are way too spoiled here in Canada, mostly cause parents are too busy to care.

Here is a better idea...

ban stupid negligent parents that allow kids to hurt themselves when babywalkers are used improperly...

Back when i was a kid, leaving kids alone to hurt themselves was called child neglect....

fucking government.... ban this ban that..... just pay your taxes and shut up LOL

ok.
My 2 cents.
My parents are probably the best parents i have seen especially to today's standards. They would never leave us with a baby sitter or even leave our side at any time. My brother back in 1978 managed to knock down the stair gate and rolled off a 25 step ceramic stairway.

Thankfully, the wheel got caught on the second post and he was dangling there. Escaped certain death.

Now, in no way are my parents negligent, to busy to care and unfit to have kids. My mother always told me if every parent were like them there would be no problems in the world. Words i still believe.

My point is accidents happen.

Remember that unfortunate incident in montreal when the father went to dig out the car with his baby inside and the car filled with co2.

While we are at it - why not outlaw McDonald's as well ? I wonder how many deaths annually are as a direct result of eating in McDonalds ??

"Excuse me sosifer, no I have not been drinking [hic]"...

I think its an extremly responsible move by the gov't

there is no advantage to babies aided in walking(proven) and the things have a high center of gravity, like SUV that make them easy to tip.
They are a danger, and they are un needed.

And why not ban McDonalds? Becuase people have a choice to eat it or not..babies cant say 'no I dont want to be in the walker'

and they are working towards healthier food, and cigarette bans. ALL positive steps for our health.

I disagree with the ban. As an afterschool nanny for 5 years, and have been around infants and children of all ages for a LONG LONG time, I can honestly say that babywalkers can be very beneficial in assisting infants with using leg muscles and learning how to take those first steps. they even have warnings on them "DO NOT LEAVE CHILD UNATTENED"

If used responsibly, its a good thing. Just like those bath chairs. I know somebody who was charged with negligence b/c she left her child in it and the seat came loose and the child drowned. She was an idiot for leaving her child in there unattended.

Infants are very delicate, and all theyre toys and seats and walkers etc. are meant to assist with the care and growth of the child, not to replace the care of a parent or guardian. When used responsibly, they are TOTALLY safe and beneficial to the growing child.

I totally agree with you, I've been around children a long long time as well and yes, those things might be dangerous...but then what's not dangerous to an infant?? everything is at that age...it's that like she said, those things are there to aid the child's development not to take over the adult's responsibility of taking care of them.

Well said Christina

Mcguinty is an asshole... he wants to "work with the fast food industry to develop better products"

Go suck a nut you social engineering communist!

Simple answer.... educate people... if they still choose to eat junk its their own damn fault.... Its supposedly a free country

THESE THINGS ARE FUCKING DANGEROUS!

my niece likes to jump and run in these things and they tip VERY easily.

if you hit a bump the momentum flips them over.

I heard they were banned long before April 7th, like three years ago.

and those that have cried neglegence should realize that you dont have your eye on your child 24/7. It's in that split second that a freak accident can happen.

once we saw the walker was dangerous we got rid of it. that "baby bouncer" is an ideal substitute (the one where the baby is in bungie cords).

Of course a bouncing baby is going to cause some ruckus, thats why they need supervision. you can say that baby bouncer is unsafe too. what if the kid jumps and jumps so hard that it flips over in the cords and gets tangled around the neck. And dont say it cant happen, cuz it can! ive seen my nephew jumping wildly in it and almost got tangled up in it. But since my sister in law was standing right there, she prevented it by stopping him from jumping too hard. And kids at that age should have supervision 24/7 BECAUSE they are so fragile!

Posted by bass drive on Apr-21-2004 06:19:

as TheNeonAlien said, if the baby is going fast and bump into some obstacle, it could tip easily. (my mother told me; I flipped in the damn thing a couple of times )
I don't think they should be banned though, they should just focus on improving the design.

My sister bought one a little while back. The base on this thing is huge. its probably .75 meter in width. I cant see this particular design tipping over. Still the danger of going down the stairs.

I agree with that. Parents are getting all these new fun activity things for kids that they may think it will make parenting easier they often forget to read something I noticed people have a huge problem with; READING THE INSTRUCTIONS. In each of them it says never to leave the child unattended. People should not have children if they are not going to be there for the chld all the time. A Child is a repsonsibility that takes up 100% of your life until he/she moves out.

Anyhow back to baby walkers. I don't liek them either and I thought they have already been banned since the mid 90s?????

Posted by tatgirl on Apr-21-2004 17:34:

Well, u could always run out and buy up all the baby walkers now & sell them on Ebay to desperate Canadians at a later date, LOL.

Hey, and if anybody wants to purchase one of those banned Cabbage Patch Snack Time dolls, that were banned for eating children's fingers and hair, I got 2 for sale. They go great with baby walkers.

Posted by Jayx1 on Apr-21-2004 17:54:

You cant

part of the bill is the ban of resale at autctions and garage sales. They have thought of everything. Beware, they are watching you and thinking up new ways to control your behaviour daily...

Posted by tatgirl on Apr-21-2004 18:08:

Yeah, well u can't sell drugs either, but it happens.... a LOT.

Besides, people sell those Cabbage Patch dolls on ebay all the time. (dunno if anyone buys them tho). I'm sure some member of a punk rock band would find amusement in having 'one of those dolls that eats children'.
