HARDEST games ever

Maybe I'm just too uber leet, but games these days just don't feel as challenging as they used to. So, lets relive some old memories. What are some of the hardest games you've ever played?

Off the top of my head, Breath of Fire 1/2 come to mind, as well as Empire Strikes Back for SNES, though it could have just been that I was like 9 at the time.

E.T. The Extraterrestrial(Atari 2600) - ...WTF? I didn't even know what was going on in that game, much less come anywhere near to beating it.

Killer Instinct(SNES) - Hard mode...good luck.

Super Mario Kart(SNES) - Most advanced Rainbow Road track on highest difficulty. AAAH! rainbow road is evil. And pretty gay I might add (no offense).

Kung Fu(NES) - Frustration!

My Favorite:
Kaboom(Atari 2600) - Hard, but fun once you get into it. I used to get into that game bigtime...was shaking usually, after coming off of a level where the bombs were going so fast that you had to rely pretty much wholly on the criminal's movement to catch them. Actually it was wierd, I dunno, on the faster levels I would just begin to stare at the center of the screen and somehow be able to catch the bombs that were moving uber fast...maybe I was watching the criminal, maybe the bombs (somehow), maybe both.

There is no such thing as a hard RPG, imo. Unless you try and breeze through it without leveling up some here and there.

I'd have to say the original Ghouls N Ghosts was the most frustrating game for me.

I remember I got very frustrated with Wizards & Warriors II for NES. Back then they gave you limited lives and saves and continues and the controls where much more difficult, not like most games today.

GoldenEye 007 (N64): holy hell.. some of those levels took me hundreds of tries.. the Aztec temple was a b!tch on medium but a piece of cake on hard..
Perfect Dark (N64): i gave up..
a ton of games from the Genesis just made me pissed..
for example..
Road Rash.. once you were on level 5, it was like 10mins a race, and them turns! jeeeeez.. i'd always friggin destroy my bike at bout 75% through..

ROGUE SQUADRON - N64

hard to get all the gold medals, my brother did it though, with a player's guide

Ah, Rainbow Road was easy once you'd mastered the 'Jump-Off-The-Track-Fly-For-Half-A-Year-And-Land-Back-On-The-Track' trick.

I think a more important question is this...

Are older games generally more difficult, or do we only remember them as difficult because we were less experienced gamers?

More difficult because many of them were linear and you had to have a straight run through the entire game without the help of saving. At least that's what made GNG so hard for me.

I found Final Fantasy 8 to be quite difficult, and I've played through quite a number of RPGs in my time. (Parasite Eve 1 & 2, Xenogears to name a few of the more challenging ones)

Probotector / Contra Hardcorps on the Sega Megadrive, or how to wreck your fingers in an instant.

Knightmare 2 : Maze of Galious, for finding the damn cross needing to beat the final boss (it was in a very VERY well hidden place. If you didn't have it, you had to defeat Galious by hitting him with 999 mines... You could only lay 3 at the same time on the screen. And worst of all, your max amount of mines was... 999. Took about an hour and a half to beat Galious if you didn't have the cross, and you had to play a perfect battle then).

And when it comes to reflexes, Samurai Shodown 3 on Neogeo in hardest mode isn't bad either...

And finally, Doom2 in Nightmare.

i agree with everyone who's said snes and nes games. nes games were GOD DAMN hard!!!!! and i thought that it was just because i was young. but i go back and play them now and i still get pwnd. games are built for pussies. let's see 6th grader bobby smith who fucks everyone up in counterstrike beat the old castlevania's. pussies...

Posted by BadBadNeil on Apr-24-2004 04:41:

lol castlevania. Wanna know something freakin weird? I still remember my last save code from Castlevania II. If anyone has their ol' nintendo kicking around try it out its UFHDF3BWY2VLTTAV

I think newer games are easier in general because my little cousin can beat a lot of the newer games on PSX and gamecube. Hell most PC games that I play I can usually beat in 2-7 days, with the exception of RPGs.

castlevania 2 was the fucking shit! best game in the series besides SotN, in my opinion. dracula was so easy though... just bomb him with holy water and SEE YA!

hey... anyone remember those VHS strategy guide things? like they would show someone playing some games in order to show you tricks and how to beat certain levels or whatever. i had like 3 on tape, but we taped over them! i'm so pissed! so many times i wanted to watch them to relive some video game memories! my favorite of the tapes had bionic commando and milon's secret castle on it. i never even played those games... but i loved watching the guy play those games. especially in milon cause the narrator fucked up and said something about being electrified if you touch a certain area. then the dude touched it and nothing happened. me and my brohter were always like wtf!? anyway... enough rambling...

Yeah some missions on there can be difficult. I managed to pass them all after a time though.

And i've never been good at fighting games(Street Fighter, Tekken, etc...). But that hasn't stopped me from buying and playing them. They're just so darn fun. Especially Marvel Vs. Capcom 1&2.
