win 98 all the way

Posted by gumble on May-04-2004 08:38:

just saw about this worm on news!

lol, it totally fucked up westpac today!

i mean, this is a hell annoying worm, but farrrkk, the party associated with writing it, smart ppl indeed!!!

fastest spreading worm / virus, with highest code red yet or something.....

Posted by escee on May-04-2004 08:50:

its not actually that "smart"

when it infects a machine, it opens up 128 tcp ports to random ips and tries to infect them. Sasser C opens up 1024 making the computer virtually unusable.

This is a time where it really pays to have a legit copy of XP... and not ignore the auto updater.

oh well... anyone have any suggestions for a small, easy to use but decent firewall program?

Posted by rahvin on May-05-2004 22:32:

I've actually gotten a short term contract job doing support for Microsoft for this worm. I think i've taken over 130 calls for this bloody virus and it's fucking booooooring telling people how to fix it over and over and over again.

go to www.microsoft.com/security -> sasser worm and do steps 1-3

if anyone needs more detailed help let me know.

Oh and W98 can be affected by one of the varients, your machine doesn't crash but it will slow down while the worm sends itself to other vulnerable machines.

if you have XP then there's a build in firewall that you can turn on. Just goto the properties of your net connection and goto advanced and tick off protect my PC.

Posted by Drifter on May-06-2004 03:08:

yea but the sasser virus gets around the xp firewall

Sasser dude caught !!

Amazes me how a schoolboy can cause so much damage around the whole world with no more than a 1mb file.

I don't have a legit copy of XP, but thankfully, I heard about this at uni on Tuesday, and when I got home, my non-legit copy of XP had already updated itself.
