I remember the sets when he used to play progressive stuff, but nowadays he's playing house and soft crap.. what happened?!

Comparing the Set Paul Van Dyk Live @ Mark Spoon Birthday Party with the new Set Live @ Columbiahalle, I noticed that the old sets are WAY better!

And.. YES.. I'd call tracks like V.I.P. 3000 - The Combat or Resistance D - You Were Here (Heckmann Remix) Progressive!

Compared to the tracklist..

You're right Astronaut, PvD plays all different types of stuff.....breaks, progressive house, hard trance, uplifting epic trance, disco house, techno, tech-trance....but mostly DEEP TRANCE....mmmmmmm.

some of his progressive sets are:

live @ Nikita
live @ Simons
live @ O (first disk is progressive, then get's more trance last 2 disks)
live @ Ministry of Sound (jan 2001, not the older one)
live @ Columbiahalle (first 2 parts)

I love how he's so versatile.

ALL his sets are amazing!

"how we used to live" is progressive, so is the pvd club mix of "tell me why", so is "vega" starecase remix.

"out there" and "a different journey to vega" are more techno cuts.

just listen a Sasha, Digweed, or a Deep Dish set!
That's what I call progressive.
Compare them to a PvD set, and you realize that PvD is not progressive!

and the tracks you, Raven mentioned are epic trance, or uplifting.

i dunno if all thoes sets are progressive .. sasha and diggers are more progressive...but pvd seems to be playing way more mello .. and in downloading the set swamper has up now and well thats pretty progressive..

the PVD of old is way better in my view.. Homelands is one set which he got spot on.. very good track selection.. also the older sets from "ministry of sound sessions" galley turnmills etc..

his SSS set was very uplifting too.. i guess pvd has become a moody DJ.. playing what he feels.. bit of a let down coz paying $$ to see him and then a huge let down when he dropps all these slow fluffy tunes... not good in my view.. i saw him last year and he blew everyone away.. so hard and uplifting .. people were crying .. he knew he got it right.. we couldnt dance at all ,, so packed,, we just stood there... the best 4 hour set ive ever been to ..

personally i think his newer sets are amazing. the recent columbiahalle set is probably the most radical departure for him that i have personally heard. i am far from the resident PvD expert here, but compare the third part of "Live At The O" to the second part of Columbiahalle and the difference is amazing. I love both of them, but you can really see the progression. the grooves are deeper and the pacing is, IMHO, a little bit better than some of the older sets where there was the tendency to have one anthemic trance song after another (Mayday 2000, for example).

I wouldn't know if his style changes but the last live set I heard from him was very good.. i really liked it so hope he stays this way.. He's pure quality

I think he's following the trend of playing more progressive as many other top name DJs are doing. I don't like progressive too much but when PvD plays it, it's awesome. He does say that he plays 'electronic music' so he's going to obviously then have some diversity of styles in his sets. I don't think he'll ever lose that uplifting feeling in his sets, it might be less than it used to but his sets will always have that amazing feeling to them whether they are progressive or uplifting.

hey.... i know you are taking a slating from some people for saying he has played prog tracks/sets.....but he has... paul van dyk 6 hour sets at gatecrasher..he always plays a deep progressive set in the middle.... of course he plays the high energy trance that everyone has heard but there is a different side to pvd that some of you havent experienced... he has played all sorts... house (eg amber-sexual), breakbeat (eg bt-fibonacci sequence), trance, progressive obvious examples there... and even i was told a drum and bass track!!! from layo and bushwacka! i think... and hard house ..in the way of a pants and corset track! he is the most diverse dj i know..and thats why we admire him so.... cu

I got my own definition of trance. Those tunes I call Progressive Trance, but I just call it Progressive instead of saying the whole 2 words all the time. I personally don't listen to Sasha, Digweed ect.

I kinda miss the good old hard sets! They ruled! But now..

Paul is definitely showing his diversity and versatility when it comes to his recent sets..but as everyone is stating, he promotes electronic music as a whole...and to begin separating his music into different genres, i believe, might be a mistake. Many of his productions have elements of what people might consider drum&bass, breakbeat, and the repetitive rhythms of techno and trance....overall, he is THE biggest Ambassador of electronic music in the world right now, so to claim that he is following the trend of becoming a "progressive" dj is B.S. Just sit back and listen to his intelligence and artistry of music..and im sure you'll be satisfied...

in the last few weeks, my liking for pvd's djing style has just risen and risen, he is DEFINATELY my favourite dj at the moment, without a doubt

I am going to see him for the first time ever on Oct 13 in Houston Texas and I am really really hoping he will play a uplifting set. My personal favorite set I have heard from him is Innercity 2000 - part 2, the tracks on there are just so freakin great. Hopefully Van Dyk will come through for me.
