Question The talented William Hung

I was at HMV on the weekend and I had a lil chuckle to see that William Hung (of American Idol Talent Show ) is like at number 20 something and Clay Aitken is near the bottom in sales...

i've had this album for about a month now....

it's incredible

best song is I Believe I Can Fly

i wonder if he actually realises that people are laughing at him, and not listening to him sing...or he has already realised and is just cashing in on this dumb wave of success? if its option number 2, then he is a smart guy, otherwise he is just annoying!

Posted by Max Q on May-03-2004 17:01:

Yeah.. i believe that. It's not surprising what marketing and a little de-moralization can do for one's career. Now, we know William seems fairly intelligent (He's a Civil Engineer so that MUST account for something -- )

.. does he know that most people are buying/listening this stuff mainly because people are laughing at him and not due to his 'talent'? Don't get me wrong, he has all the confidence and drive in the world which I admire.

I just hope he is not THAT naive...

LOL@ His video of 'She bangs' hehe..
Guy's smart, cashing in on this wave of crazyness.

Andie, what are you doing coming out of your Lurker box?

But yes... Hung is smart nonetheless. It's just that from what 'interviews' with him I've seen, i get the feeling that he really honestly thinks he sounds great!

Who knows -- maybe limited dexterity and off-key vocals is the way of the future...

I just hope people don't see him as the typical asian guy. I saw his video and I couldn't stand to watch more than 2 minutes of it. Am I losing my sense of humor? I mean it was funny at first but they're just taking this thing way too far.

But yeah, kudos to him for selling more albums than the martin short lookalike.

KarateKid

does anyone remember the Simpson's episode when Bart became the "I didn't do it" guy?

Success can be short lived, so he might as well enjoy it and cash in on it while he can.

Unfortunately, this guy can sometimes be a disgrace to Asian men by playing off their token stereotypes within Western pop-culture.. ugghz.. i sound stop complaining or risk sounding like DigiNut

He is the complete opposite of modern singers. When was the last time you saw a:
-geeky looking
-short
-poor singing
-poor dexteritny
-asian

to become big? This uniqueness and his embarassment made him popular. Although, I fear he will become noone's idol, and will fade soon.

I just like the guys name... c'mon William Hung?? SOunds like a pornstar name

Thumbs up You go William!

I say good for him! It doesn't really matter whether people are laughing AT him or WITH him, HE will have the last laugh! I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel, and he was trying his best to make Mr. Hung look bad and make fun of him, but in the end, he couldn't do it. This guy is so genuine and innocent, it's like kicking a puppy!

Good for him to have the balls to go for what he's dreamed of! He obviously has SOMETHING that people are looking for, or they wouldn't be buying his albums!

The hilarious part to me, is that even if his "singing" career peters out after a few months of novelty, he can shrug and move on to his engineering career... not exactly a low-paying profession either!

Good for him.

Yes. Good for him...

... but at what cost. I just want to make sure that he's doing this KNOWINGLY. If he is, then yes.. the joke's on all of US and he definitely has the last laugh.

Like I said -- I have the utmost respect for this guy for giving his all. And I say 'good for him' as well.

I heard a really good trance remix of his She Bangs with big monster synth and all...you start laughing but your bopping your head. Whoever did it had some pretty decent production for a joke.

I'm pretty sure the guy knows wtf is going on. They guy is an engineer from Berkely University. Berkely has one of the toughest and most famous engineering faculties worldwide

This is exactly my point, once everybody has had a good laugh, and he's maybe a few million richer, he goes back to engineering... Even if he is an "innocente", he's still got it made!

HE bangs, baby! Heh heh...

And truth be told, Kimmel put him on the spot and made him sing a little bit of a song from his album, Hung chose "Rocket Man" by Elton John, and he sung it better than I could have, with no music and no monitors and no preparation... and I'm not TOO bad a singer...

WHAT cost? Do you really think he gives a shit if people are laughing with or at him? He's a millionaire and women love him. And that's more than can be said for 99.99% of those who are laughing at him

Posted by Enraptured on May-04-2004 01:37:

Hmmm.... i have my doubts about him being a millionaire yet. Celebrity doesn't necessarily equal MONEY, don't forget. Even selling records doesn't make you as much money as you think.

But he is enjoying a lot more success than most, that's for sure.

Posted by Max Q on May-04-2004 02:01:

Ahh.. capitalism at its best.

No matter what the moral cost, it's all about the cash.

Sad...

His parents must be so happy....

not that he is doing what he likes, rather that he will get alot of money.

Oh no doubt. Actually for both the money and the dream.

Love is in the air william HUNG what a stud !

I think the majority of our friend willy's fame comes from his name. Perhaps women think that he is well hung as advertized.

This guy very obviously thinks that people like him because he is talented. No one has the heart to tell him he is popular because people feel sorry for him for humiliating himself in front of millions of people.

I can understand people buying the record, it is like watching a car wreck it is gruesome but you just can't look away.

Why can't people support real artists who deserve compensation for their art rather than some really bad karaoke singer. A sad sad day if you ask me.

Posted by Dr. Z on May-04-2004 04:48:

Shows how you don't need talent to be famous.

It also shows you how fame is related to money.

Which shoes how famous musical 'artists' are not really artist because they do it for the money.

Which, finally, shows that artists don't need compensation for their work.
