networking via Router and USB network adapter
Okay so i have recently just network my computwer and my brothers. I was wondering, if its possible to share files now to both computers. The sole purpose was just to share the internet but we want to get our full money's worth
and if so how do i go about doing this. thank you
what operating systems are the pc's running?
my brothers is running on windows 98 and im running windows xp
Any folder you want to share just right click on it and got the sharing properties and give it a share name.
you should be able to see the computers in network nieghborhood or my network places.
Piece of cake.
My computer -> My network places -> set up and home or small office network -> (now follow the wizard through, make sure both computers are turned on).
btw do this on the XP computer
this will work, but u may have some problems, if so post back and i'll try n sort em out.
a good networking guide that covers stuff can be found here - http://iamnotageek.com/articles.php?aid=25&page=1
alright everything is working fine...i have the internet working on both comps perfectly i just cant share files between eachothwer...ive tried all ur methods nothing works...
blame MS, they made networking between different operating systems soo hard, your best bet is to try to set up file sharing on the win98 system first
true, if you share a folder on XP that has more than 12 characters for the share name, then 98 won't see it.
do the pc's have their own ip address?
I don't think you can share files via router. You need to have both computers connected through a crossover cable.
I could be wrong though...
Sorry max, u are wrong, im doing it atm.
btw Vivid boy, why dont you just install XP on the win 98 system, itd make this file sharing thing a LOT easier!
downside is 98 is a lot easier to screw with and u'll lose that, but if you're not into playing around with the OS then id just upgrade the 98 system to a XP one
share the folder you want, give both machines an ip address in the same range, connect them together with either a crossover cable, or standard cat5 network cable if they're going into a router/hub/switch. restart both machines and then browse the other computer for the folder.
