Firewall

Does anybody use firewall software? I don't really know much about it all, but now that I'm in a 24hr preminant connection I'm thinking it might be a good idea since the machine's online all the time. Is it worth it? I don't run Linux or anything, just Win2k. But like I said it's connected pretty much 24/7 because it acts as an internet gateway for another machine.

Can anybody recommend any good software or am I being too paranoid? Also how would it affect my system/connection performance (if at all, but remember I'm only 56k).

Blackice defender is a good one

Yeah Blackice is pretty good. just get the demo and heard over to astalavista.box.sk to find the "modification" for it. then once you have it up and going go to http://grc.com/ and get them to check your ports and that'll tell you how safe you are. Good luck

BlackICe is good but Zone Alarm is better. and its 100% free!! if u use it for home personal use.

am using Agnitum Personal firewall, this one is very powerful !!!!!
it also can :
remove banners
stop pop-up
block ping and more...

If you have a second pc, set up linux und configure your firewall with ipchains and a seperat port forwarding. I use it and it�s the best firewall i ever used. The only problem is that you need some experience in Linux and network technologies.

Black ice defender is crap ! it has many security issues that zonealarm does not .

Example, Zonealarm will only allow one application of a type to access the internet
Many trojans are called the same as what u already have on your system so cos u let your firewall let that application access the internet then that trojan of the same name is free to use the internet too.
ZA wont allow this so protecting u as well as also preventing SPYWARE accesing the internet

Zonealarm has been around for a while and is constantly being updated and u will be able to get all those updates for free

Go with zonealarm. www.zonelabs.com

I went with Zone Alarm in the end. Black ICE kept giving me loads of errors about being unable to create filters and stuff. Also there's something that bothers me about going to somewhere like astalavista to crack my firewall

So anyway, Zone Alarm's all up and running. All seems well. Funnily enough as soon as I enabled it it asked permission for a file called saveas.exe! So I found it and there was a load of documentation about it sending and recieving advertising info from it's users or something!! Anybody know what it is? It had an uninstaller so I run that and it removed everything.

Anyway all a bit suspicious so I'm wondering if there's any software out there that will scan your system looking for dubious stuff that's already on there. Will a virus checker do all that? I'm getting very security consious these days

this will scan your system for all spyware and various dodgy applications that send out information about you and your system and what u veiw on the web

I have tried a lot of different kinds of firewalls.. I've got adsl a some of those firewalls even prefented me from dialing in.. and i couldn't turn that off. and things like msn and icq can't connect because they are blocked.. does zone alarm do this also or can those things be configured?

Well I've only just started using it but it basically tells you every time a program tries to access the internet and you can decide whether to allow it or not. So at the moment I've got it to always allow internet exploter, icq, mirc etc.... so whenever something else tries, it will let me know and I can decide. It also pops up occasionally to let it know that it's bloked a port/stopped an IP. You can set it to do all this stuff without telling you though so it can all be really seemless if you want.
