Greatest Band Evah!!!!!!!
I was posed this question yesterday and I could not decide
The Beatles did much for music in general
but U2 owns so much....tough call....but nirvana led the grunge movement.....i'm undecided till 5 mins ago....when someone could not stand my talk about u2
so u2 it is to piss off that person.....:P
The Clash
see my buddy mentioned the stones and the clash
this will never have a true answer
then his g.f mentioned Michael Jackson in the mid 80's with thriller and BAD.
Squeeze my lemon, til the juice runs down my leg.

uhm, how can you NOT answer The Beatles? I don't even know what to say except for WOW. if there has been any group in the history of music that has managed to change/develop/pioneer as much as they did, it has been The Beatles hands down.
Well M.J. I couldnt consider a band, but very influential in the creation of pop as we know it.
There's many influential artist and bands...here are a few I find that stick out.
The Pixies, a rock band that influenced the grundge era...
The Smiths of the 80's era has some of the most memorable rifts and synths. Morrissey and Marr, a great combination of musical talent.
the punk movement of "the Ramones" from the CBGB roots, but I would even say The Stooges were showin punk alongside the MC5 of the 70's and 60's.
Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Led Zepplin...the list goes on and on.
But we can go even before that, from LedBelly and Robert Johnson and the other early workings of blues.
For most influential I'd have to go with The Beatles or Elvis.
Radiohead
underworld
Don't forget Kraftwerk, bitches.
phish.
-best concerts ever... from "shakedown street" in the parking lots, to spaced out black hole and 70's funk jams, to Paul Languedoc's killer light shows and there is no comparison at this point in time. their studio CDs are slacking and do them no justice to the live experience!
grateful dead
-my second place... again the live shows they put on were just completely amazing. my favourite album by them is "American Beauty"

i must admit...U2 is definitely my favorite band...
Dude, music wouldn't be ANYWHERE if it weren't for Motown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, and all of those other turkeys who broke through and changed the way people loved the music.
Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Radiohead, Oasis, Metallica, U2, THE POHLICE!
In that order
I throw my vote in for TOOL.
My vote goes to 311. (Don't bitch at me, this is personal opinion)

zeppelin and pink floyd
Queen
Ohh, long live Freddie Mercury!
Iron Maiden is guilty of being the best band evah!!!1

CASE CLOSED!
As if U2 even deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as the Beatles
For me personally, I love Queen, and I think Kraftwerk should get a mention too, as do New Order. And in more recent times I would go with Radiohead.
My favorites are The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Joy Division, New Order and from contemporary times Sigur Ros and Radiohead.
Personally I think this is all classical music, a pretty obsolete medium of art expression for the 21st century.
Kraftwerk I would put in another category, because then one would have to include Underworld, Daft Punk, Massive Attack and so many other edm bands that are much more musically innovative than actual rock in all of its branches.
