Say goodbye to smoking rooms --Next on the ban list
June 1st hasnt even arrived yet and i read that Toronto City council is already considering a bylaw to ban seperately ventilated rooms by 2007. This was supposed to be a comprimise for club and restaurant owners. Many have already spent 10s of thousands of dollars on ventilation equipment and construction. This is EXACTLY why i am against letting the regulators take an inch because they always take it a step further.
A big FU to all the people who spent 10s of thousands on a bylaw that was stupid to begin with. Coming soon, patio smoking bans. Believe it...
There was once a time when bars were synonymous with smoking. But the blue air of the pub will soon dissipate. On June 1st, Toronto's bars and restaurants will become smoke-free.
With a progressive emphasis on healthy living, many saw the move coming and some bar owners, like Lesley Gaynor, made what they initially thought to be an intelligent business maneuver.
She created a designated smoking room at Queen Streets Mitzi's Sister.
But now the city of Toronto is moving to ban these as well, leaving the future of Gaynors establishment hazy at best.
Creating the room cost her $9,000, a significant sum for a small establishment.
I'm not a (big steak house) that already has lots of capital behind it. So it was a big decision to take my very limited budget and go, do I take that much of it and spend it on something that could potentially be void?'"
Thats exactly what she did, however, and her worst case scenario may soon become reality. Toronto's Board of Health wants the province to bag designated smoking rooms completely by the year 2007.
Peel Region has already decided to eliminate them by 2010.
The Ontario Restaurant Hotel and Motel Association thinks the 2007 deadline is a terrible bait and switch game.
We had an agreement signed in 1999 with the city that said that they would phase out smoking in bars and restaurants by June 2004, commented the Associations Ryan Parks. We've understood that. But we've also understood that there would be an option for designated smoking rooms. They're trying to change that now.
people smoke because of capitalism. it is the same reason why smoking is getting banned. it is because of capitalism.
don't blame the government or the smokers, blame capitalism!

this sounds more like central command socialism to me...
It's unfortunate, but I can't say I'll lose any sleep over this.
you arent a clubowner who stands to lose a lot of business and/or have spent thousands of these rooms.

in a perfect world no one would smoke and banning it wouldnt affect businesses. Sadly this isnt a perfect world. People who are on the ban bandwagon dont live in reality. They are idealists and idealism never works in the real world.

Business who have already spent money on smoking rooms should be compensated. However I do agree with the total ban on smoking...

(& i'm a girl btw!!!)
I read ads on the subway, does this mean clubs as well, or just
bars? Clubs might be falling under different business "category".
Maybe this can bring a new crowd of none smokers to the scene. There
might be more people out there that do not go because
they know their clothes will stink like an ashtray the next day.
Those who dont want smoke in clubs? Fine. However why do smoking rooms bother you? You dont have to go there and smokers get a chance to puff away. This will attract the smokers who want to smoke and allow the bar patrons who dont want it to remanin smoke free.
Oh and the dream about attract non smokers to clubs? I dont buy it. People who dont smoke are not going to avoid clubs because of it. If they do this they arent real clubbers anyways.

as a smoker im kinda on the fence with this issue.
It is a bit ridiculous that the city would make you spend large money on renovations for a ventalation system to then ban smoking entirely.
Enforcement is the key issue. Does the province (or is it the city?) have the money to spend on enforcement officers? In today's age of tight budgets, I'b like to see them try.
I was working at the Phoenix the last time they tried to ban smoking (1997) and it was a sham. Bouncers have other concerns.
cash strapped city council is hiring 8 more enforcement officers specifically for late nights on weekends.
Nice to see your 3% tax hike in action isnt it?
8!
Boy, they're going to hit everyone at once, aren't they?
good music and clean air = great cardio excersise !!!
In Guelph and Waterloo the police go through the bars looking for smokers. The bouncers are usually running ahead of them trying to get the smokers before they do. Since the ban was created in my area, it has taken 2-3 years for the smoking to actually stop in the bars. After enough fines the bars will enforce the non-smoking rules.
There were also a bunch of bars that tried to fight the fines, in the end, they spent more on legal fees then the original fines that were levied but still lost anyways.
Good to see the police in Guelph don't have any crimes to solve.
What about private clubs that require membership?
