AN Algerian Islamic cleric was deported from France yesterday after announcing that wife-beating was authorised by the Koran.
Abdelkader Bouziane, imam of a mosque in the city of Lyon in eastern France, caused an uproar when he told a local magazine he was polygamous, believed "beating your wife is authorised by the Koran", and expressed the hope that "the entire world becomes Muslim".
Asked if he was in favour of stoning, he replied, "yes".
The 53-year-old cleric was arrested and deported under an order issued in February on the grounds of societal harmony, the Interior Ministry said yesterday.
"The Government will not tolerate public comments against human rights, which attack human dignity and, in particular, the dignity of women, calls to hatred or to violence, or justification of terrorism," the ministry said.
It said Mr Bouziane's comments to the magazine "confirm the solid grounds for the deportation decision".
The interview in Lyon Mag has outraged Islamic representatives in France.
"The associations should sack imams like him," said Mohamed Bechari, head of the National Federation of French Muslims. "We condemn this type of slip, which shows a fundamentalist reading of the Koranic text that is not part of Islam nor the Muslims in France."
French politicians had expressed anger at Mr Bouziane's comments and said they would make an example of him.
Justice Minister Dominique Perben said yesterday he was "personally scandalised" by the remarks.
The imam had defended himself by claiming the interview was not properly conducted, and had demanded the magazine publish a retraction or face a lawsuit, sources close to the organisation that runs the mosque, Es Salem, said.
Mr Bouziane's lawyer, Mahmud Hebia, said Mr Bouziane had arrived in France legally in 1980 and held a residence permit. "He is the father of 16 children, all French, including 10 minors. He is worried for his young children."

sooo yeah i posted an old article already but i just wanted to know how the government of your country deals with these problems .....the fact is that currently in france our immigration comes mostly from marocco /algeria and tunisia where people are muslim so we have a lot of muslim people in france and like 1500 imams for the whole country .....1500 legals cuz they are also a lot who are unknown ....and who have no skills and the preparation to do it .....which can leads to major problems ....latley a lot of others imams have been arrested again because they were saying insults towards the US and were inciting to the war against US and occident ....
now the government is searching for a solution and think about creating centers where we could give the education needed so as to teach the koran like a better knowledge of the arab language ,the history and all ....i think it would be a good solution and would maybe avoid that anyone who here have read the koran can decide to call himself an iman and say anything he wants without being controled or checked .....
the islam representatives in france would be in favor of this ....
I'm sorry to tell you, marie, but I'm afraid you've already lost the battle in France. There's no way back anymore and it won't take longer than 100 years till France is predominantly Muslim/Arab.

Le Pen may not have been a fan of the Jews, but he hates what the Muslims have done to France, and would see to it that they were "taken care of" first. I really wish France would get their act together on this problem, as I really do enjoy visiting the country, and would like it to remain a Western nation. |

As an outsider looking in, would it be safe to say that France is "due" under the guise of jihad.
I'm not French nor do I follow it's politics and daily goings on. I only see what every body else sees, as an outsider, from the T.V. and the paper and the internet.
So after reading h0tsweetbabyd0l's article, on top of everything else. I got this weird feeling.

| I'm truly lost - I just don't know how we (the west) are supposed to handle this. |
I agree that the rapid growth of the muslim population in France poses a problem. The arab world is currently much more fundamentalist than it was 30-40 years ago (thanks to american influence, mostly), and I'd say it's a high time to impose very strict immigration rules for arabic countries. Yet on the other hand, the demographic picture of EU is plainly horrible, and without large-scale immigration, I can't see how it will be able to maintain its population balance.
30-40 years ago a woman couldn't go out with her belly button "in the air" here , 30-40 years ago you couldn't hold hand with your girlfriend outside , 30-40 years ago watching movies was blasphemous , etc ...
just to tell you once again don't generalize things because of a minority
