Monkey Dancer 2 Hernan Cattaneo, Liquid Todd, Randall Jones !!

Those who are familiar with Hernan Cattaneo are in for a huge treat as he will be performing this upcoming Friday night at Spirit (formerly Twilo). Hernan Cattaneo is becomming one of the most highly respected global dj's while at the same time releasing quality production work. John Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, and many other house music veterans are constantly praising him. Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, Hernan is enjoying a very successful and recent cd release for the Renaissance Masters cd series. Those who were at Centro-Fly for Hernan Cattaneo on 01-24-04 shared a vibe which is rarely seen in NYC these days.

Joining Hernan on the Decks will be Liquid Todd, a man that has inspired thousands around the tri-state area via his Solid State show on 92.3 K-Rock. As an extra bonus, (and definitely not one to be overlooked) will be Balance/Collective Agency member Randall Jones. With production work on virtually every big record label and a reputation for his well programmed and entertaining sets; Randall has a unique ear for great house music. With that said...

do u guys think people are gonna come out to this? im asking coz spirit fridays have been really slow since they started...no matter who they bring in.

last time i went there were a dozen people at most on the floor. If thats gonna be the case this time it aint worth it to go.

Posted by dj tek on May-13-2004 19:25:

if u dont go for that reason, then it will take longer to get a decent size crowd for that party.. i might go depending on $ situation.

oh man cattaneo is definitely one of my favorite prog. house djs... i would definitely go out to this if i was 21.

i'm not really sure how to answer this as i can't predict the future. however, from what i understand, the spirit fridays just started last week or maybe a week before that. last week from what i heard wasn't packed, but then again, max graham was playing. Max is an excellent dj and pulls a good crowd at venues around the world, however, in nyc he always has a very poor turnout. he played at cielo a couple months ago which is a venue that holds 200 people (if that). from what i heard, there were only about 20 people there to see him that night. like i said, he's a great dj and a really nice guy, however, his draw in nyc for some reason is seriously lacking.

Hernan is easily one of my favorite djs and even though he just started touring nyc, he has a big fan base here. His night at centro this past january was killer, an awesome time.

Spirit is planning on bringing in some quality lineups on friday nights. hopefully the saying "if you build it they will come" will relate to the direction spirit fridays are heading in.

Who's throwing these parties? Is it John and Vlad? The line-ups look great. Satoshi is playing there next Friday! I went to Spirit's website and it's being redesigned. Anyone know the story?

Thumbs up

Excellent set by Cattaneo. He started rather early - it looked like he just came on when I arrived at 12:30 am. He played til 4 am.
Liquid Todd took over, and things seemed to die quickly (not necessarily because of his abilities), and the place closed at 5 am.
I guess Randall Jones opened and I missed all of it.

Overall I have to say this was a good night and a good sign. If the promoters can keep it up, Spirit should start to rock Next week is Satoshi Tomiie!!!

my review posted from another board.

6:40 am, barely enough energy to type. however, i had such an amazing time last night and figured i'd share a short critique. i haven't been out in a while and it was great seeing so many familiar faces from the board. i arrived at spirit a little around 11'ish to catch Randalls set. i've never heard him open before as most of the set times i've seen him have been during peak hours. he warmed up the room nicely playing a variety of tracks which were perfect for the timeslot.

Hernan took over and played one of the best sets i've heard in at least a year. flawless mixing, programming, and track selection. The guy is absolutely brilliant on the decks. i've been such a diehard Digweed fan for so long and i always will be. however, i can finally say that there is a dj that i love just as much. those who missed it really need to take advantage of Hernans next visit to nyc.

Last night was my first time hitting up spirit. i wasn't quite sure what to expect as i have heard a lot of negative things about the club. personally, i couldn't find anything wrong with the place. it's beautiful, the sound system is tight, the vibe was awesome, and the staff is very friendly. i think my positive feelings towards the club are due to the fact that i went in there knowing it's not going to be twilo, and not expecting twilo.

All in all, i had an amazing night. great job by Greg, Urban, and everyone else who made the night possible.

^-^ Nice review. I don't remember seeing you there, but then again I don't really know what you look like.

I had a lot of fun this night. My friend and I decided that Spirit is like Crobar on a tighter budget. The sound is still excellent, but the interior design isn't as nice as its main competitors, Marquee and Crobar. Hernan was amazing on the decks, and the crowd had a good vibe. I thought that there would be more people there, but the space to dance was very nice. Hopefully Spirit is here to stay.

Pics to be posted later...

Hmmm I don't really remember them enforcing much because the venue wasn't nearly filled to capacity. However, I didn't see any people in UFO's, so I would say standard club wear is fine. Spirit isn't Roxy, but they aren't going to be annoying like Marquee.
