How old is too old to listen to Trance or EDM

I go to EDM clubbs from time to time and sometimes I feel like all weird, especially when I see ppl there that look old or out of place (most of the time it's the way they are dancing and acting)

What do you guys think?

Can older people fit in with EDM? How old is too old?

How do you guys react to them?

I'd like to hear the positives and the negative.

Why could old people not fit in with EDM?

My parents still listen to the music they listened to when they were young. Why wouldn't i listen to trance when i'm 50 years old?

Same thing with clubs and concerts. My dad is 56 years old and he still goes to a local rock club to listen to some of his favorite artists. Why couldn't i go clubbing when i'm 50 years old (honestly i would probably not do it but in theory it's possible to do that)?

Ya but I asked someone older to come with me once and he refused bcuz he said he'd feel all out of place and didn't want to feel like that. Thing is that he's into EDM big time, he just thinks ppl won't want him there. And i've also seen some older ppl there doing some wierd stuff and can sorta understand why he's afraid.

The question still is, do older people fit in at clubs with EDM?

What about at DJ Sets like at Ferry Corsten, Tiesto or Sash and Digger sets?

I mean, I wanna take my friend to it and don't want him to feel weird. So what should I do?

Posted by UnBracKo on May-12-2004 14:30:

Personnally when I'm 40 I would feel out of place in a club with 90 % of young ppl, no problem with ppl who do it but it's weird for me see 40's ppl dancing techno in a club, almost they could be my parents!

wtf are u talking about? you listen to the music you like. Its not about likeing music you listen to. Mabe you taste of music will change while u get older, but your tase always changes. EDM definately wont be the way it is now in 40 years. I dont see anything wrong with dropping Gouryella @ 70 years old.

Most responsible parents, wont go out on a saturday night and drop a few hits of x if thats what ur wondering...But there isnt a law saying when u turn 40 you must listen to a different style. I imagine our age group just being like older rock age groups. Paul, Paul, ferry, s & d, and tiesto are a generation of music, that we will always listen to.

with in about 10 more years thoes djs, will most likely be retired, and i probalby wouldnt want to go out to listen to any other djs. Is your question old people having house parties/going to clubs/doing drugs...or listning 2 edm, they are 2 different arguements.

The thing I love about the EDM scene is that when you go to a club noone really cares how you look or what you do (unless you're acting hostile or something). It's all about having fun and feeling equal.

Posted by sandstorm03 on May-12-2004 14:41:

yea when i went to pvd in nyc, i saw a couple like 35-45 ish danceing and i talked to them for like 20 mins. They said that they just started listening to EDM, and they love it. It was interesting, it didn't seem like they cared, or any one else cared that they were there.

I've seen older people at different club nights i've been to, and i say fair play to them, i'd love to still be into edm in another 20years, i think its great to see people just having a good time and enjoying themselves, whether others think they're out of place or not.

it's all about the music and you baby!

I guess my question is how we all react to them if we see them at EDM clubs?

I'm ok for them listening to edm.
I just wanna get my friend to go out bcuz he's into EDM but he says TA's probly wouldn't want him around.
So I'm trying to find out if that's true from what I read at this thread.

I was thinking of taking him to hear Scott Bond bcuz I think he'll really like it since he raves about "the 3rd earth"

we dont want neo around, but that wanker just wont leave

jk - neo is actually 1 of the few mods that makes ta better...

i think when i'm older i probably won't be out hitting the clubs and stuff, but i'll still enjoy the music. perhaps the softer side like Ulrich Schnauss hehehe...but then i enjoy that now too..

Cool

I was talking to some of my ex-raver friends and they said that they feel the EDM scene is for kids and that they feel they've matured and moved on. This made me angry because it tells me that for them it was just a phase that characterized adolescence. I've seen many older people at the events I've gone to in L.A. and everbody accepts them. In fact I make it a point to smile at them and sometimes even talk to them because I am so impressed that an older generation can give us credit for the new culture we've developed, it's almost like a recognition. If I were you, I would try hard to convince my friend because unless he tries to hit on a girl half his age (which might work if she's wasted enough) I doubt anyone will treat him any different. This is just coming from my own experience.

\O/ So, So true.

Thanks

My mother loves to listen to my Ulrich Schnauss CDs, heck she even made me email ulrich with a question that turned into a brief news item. Go MOM!, seriously she wondered who was judith and are they still together, you know mothers. So judith's vocals SHOULD be on the new album btw, more updates when I decide to do more updates with ulrich...it will be called what's new with ulrich (every few months) and you can read about it on the usual place.

I don't think anything is too old, heck my parents tell me, if the song is good, who cares how old it is. My dad used to always say, you still listen to classical and that is 100's of yrs old.

I listen to edm from the mid 80's, I think if it is good, it stands the test of time. I can see me digging xpander in 20 yrs and telling my kids....I lost my mind to that track in the early 2000's

Posted by digitally404 on May-12-2004 18:45:

I wouldn't really enjoy seeing old people at a club that i'm in just cause i think that they should be parents and maybe they've got some other things to worry about than goto raves or whatnot. I like the atmosphere of people about my own age.

This is just my opinion, which is what you asked for.

But i can still see how some people are cool with it.

as i've gotten older (turned 26 3 weeks ago) it's become all about the lounges...

Posted by ratz on May-12-2004 19:29:

i have a few friends that i chat with that listen to trance... 1 is 45 and the other is 55... as for going to parties... the only thing i see wrong is that here most of the ppl at parties are 14 to 18 so any 1 over 20 would feel outta place hehe... but there was this 1 club i use to go to every friday and id always see a few ppl that were well over 30... didnt see any problem with it... its all bout the love of music an not the image... or it use to be anyways

Posted by mndeg on May-12-2004 20:26:

14-18? what is this some kind of R&B 18 and under preteen club?

Posted by Psy-T on May-12-2004 21:44:

no age is too old for EDM (or any other music for that matter)

Posted by Streakfury on May-12-2004 21:58:

Where's the 50 year old guy who signed up here a couple of weeks ago?? That guy's a star, I'm sure he'll have something to say!!

Posted by Digital Aura on May-12-2004 23:09:

Satan (eek!)

Clubs are definitely about the young'uns. That doesn't mean that the music isn't universal...
Old people just wouldn't "fit the scene".

The point is...if it's about the music...no limit.
If its about clubbing... grow up 38-year-olds!! Ain't there a bingo hall open for you?

NEVER!

Music shouldn't have age limits. Sure it may be weird to see a 60 years old granny groovin to some trance, but hey, more power to her!

Posted by Ste on May-12-2004 23:37:

i would say ur too old to listen, maybe to go clubbing, i dunno.

i got to planet zogg which is an underground nice in sheffield UK and there are one or two REALLY old people there BUT it differs case by case, i mean the two resident djs/promotors are both 38 and they dont look outta place.

but in london at psy trance parties u get millions of old people, i think they were once hippies or summin.
