need help picking a car

hey im bout to buy a used car and was wondering what you would recommend. I have been looking at either a Jeep wrangler or a vw passat/jeetta. Since gas is going up ive been leaning towards the vw. I want to spend under 15000, any recomendations??

i would go for the Jetta

or a Golf even better and probably cheaper. Looks less like a family car than the Jetta and the Passat. And if you can get a GTI it would be the best choice.

Obviously, it depends a lot on what you are looking for in a car. It sounds like you want good gas mileage and cheapness, so look at Geos... they are mechanically reliable and get great gas mileage. However, they aren't exacly babe magnets and they definately aren't muscle cars. I was in the same situation as you, except that my budget was closer to 3k rather than 15k, and it took me a long time to find a car that I could afford both in the short run and the long run. I'm biased against Jeeps (environmentally disasterous), so I can't help you there, but VWs are alright. Might I ask why you chose those two?

i was considering the jeep since it has 4x4, and i get alot of snow where i go to school. I have always liked vw's, and thats one reason i really want one. Does anyone know how reliable vw's are? I have heard mixed feelings about them.

Jeeps are more fun.

and my friend has like 6 vws (vw guy) and they are all broken or running on half their cylinders or something. It never ends.

VW's are good cars, but if anything breaks on them, it'll cost ya. They're known for their door lock/unlock breaking, and also the power windows. My aunt had a VW bug (new one) and the tires would NEVER balance properly, therefore she had the large expense of purchasing tires often.

My suggestion to you would be, to buy a Honda. You can get a used Accord or Civic for a good price, and they're fantastic cars.

Yes, Jeeps are ALOT more fun, but... if you get a soft top, you have to remember to never EVER leave anything of value in it. If you do, don't lock the door, because to get in, all they have to do is slash the top.

Believe me, they will.

Also, if you're getting a Jeep Wrangler, it may not stay warm enough for you in the winter (obviously you live somewhere cold, by your post).

Don't get the VW, it may look good but I've heard far too many complaints regarding it. Maintanance will be a hassle since (as I recall) some things can be done only by a VW dealer, and that's gonna cost ya. Not to mention that parts cost more than average on their own.

VWs look good, and it seems like that what VW is investing in. I've heard several mechanics (two) say that the cars that they see more often in their shops are VW.

But, if you have a lot of money buy away, 1.8T would be my choice. Or even better, get a maxima, those cars are very reliable, I know a guy he's close to hitting 300K on his and practically no problems (apart from maintance)

You'll save about $1,000 a year in gas, and Toyota engines run forever. My '95 Camry has never needed any work other than the basic maintenance. It's fast as hell, too.

Lol. My first car was a soft top Geo Tracker and it got broken into, but all they had to do was un-zip the back window to get in. And all they got was a bunch of mix CDs. I hope they liked them.

GTI is a great ride. Much better quality then a Jeep. Plus it's faster, better and less money on gas. You spend 13-16 k and get yourself a nice ride.

Protege5's are tight (that's what I drive... '02 P5 )

Anywho, if I were looking for a used car I'd probably get a Civic or a Camry (for reliability). You might be able to get an old Subaru within your price range. *shrug* That'd be semi-reliable and it would have AWD (for snowy weather).

Another vote for Honda. Slightly lower in cost than Toyota and just as reliable. For under $15,000, you should be able to get a Civic that's only a couple of years old (LX or EX model). Accords are roomier and cost just a bit more.

GET A HONDA!

If you get a Honda dont get the DX or LX models-
Get the EX model- Resale value alone drops off
considerably on the DX and LX. Plus you get power everything
and sunroof!

If you can find one get the Civic SI. (sporty model)
Otherwise get a Civic EX.

I get 35/30 freeway/city on mine.

On a side note- they are very good accoustically and when you install a nice system in one- they sound REALLY good.

Performance cars that come to mind are Skyline R34 GTT, mint condition E36 BMW M3, regular cars like a very good condition 5 series, average condition 7 series.

but since you're in america i'd go for the toyota or honda saloon or coupe class cars.

i'd probably get an s14a 200sx UK spec and put 10,000 worth of mods under the bonnet
