Question Learning to play the guitar.

Hey all
I'm gonna go into town tommorow and pick up a guitar, i want to learn to play a few riffs, learn a few songs and just generally play around with it. It will be acoustic.
Any tips from those of you that have a guitar? Anything that i should be aware of or look for when buying a guitar?
Any info would help LOADS

Gibson is probably the best brand. And Gibson Acoustics are the shiznat.

I have a Gibson Les Paul and it sounds beautiful. So if you have the funds go for that.

Then get a teacher and learn simple stuff like Green Day and Nirvana. Tell him to get the tabs out for you by ear or look for them in the internet and have him explain them to you. Its easier if the teacher does it by ear though and shows you the riffs and chords. Then move on to harder stuff and so on. Practice Jazz and Classical to learn the basics of soloing.

hope this helps.

I wouldn't really reccomend starting learning Green Day and Nirvana, unless it's for sheer entertainment value. Power chords are good, but there is so much more you should concentrate on before you get into the simplicities of the 4 chord wonders.

If you don't feel comfortable learning on your own, definitely see about getting yourself a teacher. Pick up a Blues Scales booklet when you pick up your guitar and see about some lessons.

google OLGA guitar tab. then search whatever songs you want to learn. Tab is the easiest stuff on earth to learn. Dont do chord pro or anything. it tells you string and fret and you can learn a song in a day. Other than that, get a digital tuner and keep it tuned. New strings stretch and detune a lot until they are a little worn.

Dont really want a teacher, want to see how i go be myself. I was thinking about possibly getting a Fender or something? Good?

All i want it for is to play when i get home from after a hard days work and just chill and play a few songs....maybe to impress the girlfriend aswell :P

I started with a fender. I finally got a Martin for around 500 bucks and Ive loved it to death forever. One of the most beautiful tones on a guitar ive heard. Just rich and full.

The Martin is SO much easier to play too. The cheaper guitars use shitty strings and the fretting can make it really hard to press down and get the right sounds. So I would say if you are gonna go with a less expensive guitar make sure to spend about 30 bucks or so on a set of premium quality strings.

Any good?
Should i buy an electronic tuner aswell or....?

hehe I think thats the one I have. Youll want to switch up to a higher quality one in a year or so. but thats probably a great one. Just dont use nylon strings!!!

and yes , electronic tuners are the way to go.

the power chord is great, but i fret it with 2 fingers not 3, its easier that way.

*sighs* hard metal riffs r teh fun too...jammin away
