Exactly.

People don't seem to understand that you get what you pay for.

Take a look at google's search results lately - they've gone downhill. You used to be able to find anything and everything on google with ease, but now you usually end up with 500 results linking to eBay, 10,000 blog entries, 1-3 front-page ads, and maybe a few legitimate results jumbled in there if you're willing to take the time to sift through it all.

The Google toolbar - amazing tool and popup killer, right? At work, our IT guy found it installed on one machine on which IE was crashing or hanging all the time. The reason? The Google toolbar was sending out an assload of unwanted traffic that the firewall was blocking and causing the toolbar to shit itself.

Gmail is spyware in the truest sense of the word. You pay nothing, but you have google's "engine" scan your e-mail to see what kind of products you might be interested in, and get "personally tailored" ads thrown at you every few minutes. You literally have a bot reading every message you write, trying to figure out how it can exploit you for money. After a year of using Gmail, Google will know almost every intimate detail of your life.

Depressed? Gmail will show you where to buy prozac! Lonely? Gmail will give you links to sex toys and pheromones! Computer broke? Count on seeing ads from Dell, IBM, and various recovery companies! Taking a trip? Gmail will be notifying you shortly of which hotels to stay at!

Thanks, but no thanks. I don't need my entire life story on record with a greedy faceless corporation whose sole aim is to make money off of me. And besides, how many people actually really need a gigabyte of e-mail? Even with all my *offline* saved messages, my mailbox size has never gone above about 50 MB.

Here's a better idea: get yourself $30 a year, work at McDonald's for a grand total of 5 hours if you have to, and buy yourself a domain and a mail storage service, $20 for the former and $10 for the latter. No spam, no ads, and you can access your mail from Thunderbird or Outlook or Eudora instead of some crummy web interface that makes your eyes bleed.

Anyone who thinks MSN doesn't scan your Hotmail is a naive fool! It boils down to one issue in my mind...who one chooses to trust more with youre personal info. Someone whos combing it for details, and admitting it, or someone whos combing it for details and not!

EDIT: Geh, corrected a horible double negative, lol
