anyone got any suggestions?

Posted by trancenrg69 on May-20-2004 00:43:

how much u looking to spend?

Posted by Raptor on May-20-2004 00:46:

obviously nothing over the price of mackie 624

check out the ESI nEar 05 monitors...they are very cheap but sound better than tannoy, phonic, alesis M1, Audiophile BX8 and all other monitors I've listened to in that class (in fact it wasn't untill I heard the genelec 1029 and the 20/20 bass that I could say I had found something better then the near 05)

Hey Raptor ok so nothing more than hr 624s. Ok well I would definently recommend the mackie hr624s, they are great, but depending on your room size u may need a sub. But if u want more power and a wider frequency range go with the Event TR8's or TR8xl's. I just ordered a pair of the TR8XL's and they are being shipped today. they are 600US a pair and have the best price performance ratio of any speaker. That would be my pick.

my personal advice...don't go with a sub, it's a pain balancing it so it doesn't give to much or to little bass

and an even bigger problem is that when you have gotten used to the balanced sound youre gonna want to crank the bass up more on it because it feels to little...

subs are only good for that final listeningreference so stay away from it as much as you can

Have you actually heard the ESI nEar 05 monitors?

I own a pair

now I know many will wonder wtf I'm saying but let me explain..

first of all I had in mind to buy the alesis M1 active but damn, they have three times as much bass as any other monitors and that bass drowns the mids and highs so they felt way to un-detalied

when it came to the tannoys, shure they sound detalied and good but they also sound very warm and that's when the warningsign jumps up for me...

when a monitor sounds warm it usually means they have boosted mids and that's not a good thing for studiomonitors wich are supposed to be flat, besides that...the mid's on the tannoys tend to drown the bass a bit making it more un-detailed

the studiophile BX8 and phonic monitors just sounded crap, absolute crap...they were horrible...couldn't listen more then a minut to them before feeling pain in my ears

Thankyou.... They seem quite small, can they go loud without harming them? and does the frequency response really go down to 33hz?

they can play loud, really loud without any distortion (louder then you need to play in your homestudio)

as for the frequency imo that's not fully true, I haven't tested how low they can go but my guess is that they are down around 50hz at the lowest and that's enough

Thanks for the info Vizay, at 150 quid I think I shall invest in a pair soon

Posted by Vizay on May-21-2004 15:31:

yeah they are well worth the money and as I said, in my opinion they're in the same class ass tannoy without any doubts

but remember, listen to all monitors I've mentioned before you guys do any purchases as they might not fit everyone when it comes to sound...it's always your own ears they have to fit in the end

i will not go for the hr 624 cause i heard the bass is inaccurate. my friend owns a pair of 824's and he doesn't use them anymore because there aren't accurate he only uses his yamaha ns10's now. i heard the alesis m1's are pretty accurate.

i'll have to check out all the speakers everyone suggested. i can get the krk rokit 8's for a pretty damn low price cause my friend can get them at whole sale.
