1. introspection
2. floor control
3. a few days away
4. 2v2

[random thought]
his kick-drum (or whatever the hell u call it) sounds similar to PVDs
[/random thought]

yup i agree...i get bored listening to his tracks, really dull imo. there are a few good ones but the majority = shite

Its true that he had always the same kick... he had great production skill. I would love to see him live

No? His last good production was The Door.

agreed... everything since then has had the same kick and zero innovation... it's like pvd's paying him off to produce cookie-cutter stuff...

Posted by umes23 on May-20-2004 06:43:

on the most part, askew is awesome... a worthwhile contribution to the dead scene

Posted by XeQtOr on May-20-2004 06:47:

Askew is a great dj but his productions are a bit booring..

Posted by Guinness Joe on May-20-2004 08:39:

To fully appreciate the greatness of Askew you really need to hear him play out!! He's quality - pure unadulterated banging trance - almost as good as PVD in my opinion

Askew is the f*cking nuts ! Agreed his productions can be a little boring for home listening but in a club they are unrivaled. As a DJ he dicks on PVD, mixing is better and he's way more consistant.

Funny i was thinking about the same thing yesterday. The melodies and synths he uses are abit harsh. Anyway, its all about taste. Tell us Sandstorm, what producer do you like?

Posted by slinkyhead on May-20-2004 11:33:

his productions are pretty good, i know what the original poster means. as i dj ive not been impressed. the first time i saw him was his slinky debut and he looked so nervous, kept trying to hide behind the decks, djs are performers and he didnt perform. mucked up alot of mixes and im not saying slightly out but proper double beats.

second time i saw him he was alot better but there are alot of djs i would say are better than him.

Posted by sandstorm03 on May-20-2004 12:07:

hes a good dj, and i like his original productions. The b-side to the door rocks imo. But his remixes ruins melodies, thats all i wanted to say...gah...

recently ive been listning to a lot of house/tech house.

benz & md have put out a lot of good stuff.

my top few producers are

pvd, tiesto, nu nrg, helstrip, brandise, second sun...

Askew kicks ass in my opinion ... BUT ...

His productions do sound similar but I think that's HIS sound. You can say the same about PVD (his production sound has not changed since Out There and Back), definitely Tiesto and even people like Markus Schulz. I love all of em but to say their productions don't sound similar is pure bullshit and you're only kidding yourselves. Sounding similar doesn't automatically mean boring.

I'm a fan of John as a producer and a dj, not so much the remixing, although I'm interested to note Castaneda - Floor Control noted as a poor "melody destroyed" mix as I think it pisses on the original. I like Introspection too but haven't heard the other mixes. He's definitely worth checking out as a dj and an interesting mix for him if you haven't heard it is his re-edit of PVD "Time of Our Lives"

he only used like 1/2 of the melody, and made the kick wayyyyyyyy to hard in the track. Its easy to notice when mixing it. I prefer the orig, its produced much better. I guess if you like the harder kick you may prefer the askew remix. Its even easier to notice this in a few days away. His mix of introspection is prob my fav remix of his, but i still prefer the original.

Erm what the f*ck happened to you this morning - did you sh*t the bed or something? I was only passing comment on the fact that most of his prooductions/remixes need to be heard out to be appreciated and you go off on one like I fed you a plate of catsh*t sandwiches!!

been there done that, his productions are good, remixes not so good.

Posted by Scottaculous on May-20-2004 17:32:

I think John's productions are quality. He has a very distinct sound that focuses more on percussion and basslines. John's tracks have a good balance between rhythm and melody. I like to think of it as hard progressive trance.

My Favorites:
1. The Door
2. New Dimension
3. Introspection Remix

Posted by Mr.Mystery on May-20-2004 17:34:

He's about as innovative as PvD.

A total waste of space.

dude you are being overly critical for no good reason.... i remember when this track was "new" you and i both agreed that the askew mix was superior (i believe after some roxy gig w/ pvd)
not to be a dick, but i remember liking the original a lot too whereas you found it "boring"

i agree, askew does use the same kick and shit and therefore his distinct sounds are made mundane by his own repetetive use of them. but i do think that in some cases it works really well and others it doesnt do tracks justice. i think floor control is an example of a bangin askew remix done right.... and even if he doesnt take the whole melody, he definitely accentuates that what he uses to cause a bigger impact (cant think of a better word)... and i think it sounds good in this case!
