recording longer sets

ok what do you use to record a set longer than 3hr 20mins? aparently my soundforge wont let me do it

Posted by D Dubya on May-20-2004 20:10:

Total Recorder. I have accidently left it on for a couple days after a drunken 2am spinning bout and winded up with a couple gigabytes big file. It was still recording though. It lets you record to wave or mp3 also. Makes it very handy

never tested it for that kind of length, but i use cool edit pro2.. might be worth a try? its a brilliant wave editing program, and in my experience one of the best and quickest mp3 encoders/decoders too.

although to be fair i've not used anything else for a couple of years...

hard disk ogg

easy to use and stable as hell, u can record as long as u want etc etc

i have a sony NET MD minidisc walkman

Take it to work, plug it in , stick it on auto level and LP4 mode and it will go for ages.

I managed to record non stop from 9:30 -3am last saturday on one single 80 min minidisc and battery....

Quality is fantastic too.

Posted by Briden on May-21-2004 14:33:

bah quality is not that good with MD, especially on LP4.

the compression does nasty things to the bass. Stick with computer, a really good card, a big HDD, and record right to wav to get the best quality.

if you can get 24/96, that's even better, but you also need more HDD space.

Posted by Freak on May-21-2004 14:50:

hey if you wanna come along to carry a Pc to record it, then be my guest.

Quality is fine (yes i know minidiscs limitations and flaws) and considering it takes 2 seconds to plug in, takes up 0 space and isnt very expensive its a viable option for most people.

Posted by D Dubya on May-21-2004 15:08:

Just bring a tape recorder, press record and set it near a speaker. Make sure to flip sides when appropriate. Glad I could help.

nar- a dictaphone would be better
Make sure you record through the in ear headphones too for maximum 'recorded in a bucket' effect

the fat32 file system has a limit of 2^32 bytes which is 4gb.

yes, for in a club or event to record a live set, it does the trick, but in the bedroom, it's much better to just use a computer if you can.

do ipods have a line in? i guess it would need encoding hardware but it would be cool as fuck if it has!

No, unfortunately I don't think they do. Perhaps Apple may consider this as a feature for it in the future if there is enough demand.

Yes, this is correct. But, if you work it out:

3hrs 20min = 200min
200min * 10.6MB (wav file size per min) = 2120MB = 2GB

The file created will only be 2GB, which may mean that dukes is running a FAT filesystem rather than FAT32, which has a 2GB maximum file size. Either that or he has an extremely full hard disk!

Try encoding directly to MP3 - this should reduce the file size by around 12 times if you use 128kbps, allowing you to record for 12 time as long. You won't need to record for 40 hours though, so I would advise using a much higher bitrate, at least 192kbps to get a decent quality recording.

Posted by DjJade on May-22-2004 14:18:

true.. just wasnt sure what kind of quality he is recording becuase my sets recorded at 24/96 are much shorter than that

plus...didnt feel like doing the math lol

no im running FAT32 and i had about 10gig free space so i dont really know what went wrong. i forgot to read the error coz i was in such a rage

how do you you record straight to mp3 using soundforge or am i better of with something else (like total recorder if i can get a copy)

edit* oh yes i tend to record at 128

Posted by DJTJ on May-23-2004 18:29:

I'm not sure if you can record to mp3 "on the fly" with Sound Forge... I run Linux so I don't use it. I know you can with Total Recorder, so it might be worth checking that out.

You should really consider recording at a higher bitrate... I personally find 128kbps horrible, and if you were considering putting these sets onto a CD or something and giving them out then 128kbps really isn't good enough.

24 * 96000 = 2304000 b/s
2304000 / 8 = 288000 B/s
288000 * 60 = 17280000 B/min
17280000 * 200 = 3456000000 B
3456000000 / 1024 = 3375000 KB
3375000 / 1024 = 3295.9 MB
3295.9 /1024 = 3.2 GB
3.2 * 2 (stereo!) = 6.4 GB

Sorry, have a maths exam tomorrow, have equations and shit running through my head so couldn't resist.
