Here is the truth...It might have been this way since I bought it. I took 2 of the same records and matched them up at the same time and used the cross fader to go from one channel to the other. When I did this I noticed that one channel was a bit louder then the other. This really sucks because I bought the damn thing about 45 days ago and I bet the store is not going to just give me another one, instead, I bet I'm going to have to send my back to Rane to get it fixed.

btw...other then that the Empath kicks ass!

Posted by ESMdjm600 on May-21-2004 02:32:

the channel gets louder than the other no matter wat? or is that just with the crossfader

Posted by las3rjock on May-21-2004 02:36:

Are you sure that it's not the records? I think it's possible that differences in temperature or other environmental factors could cause two copies of the same track to have different volume, and it'd be a whole lot better if it was a problem with the records instead of a problem with your mixer...

Posted by ESMdjm600 on May-21-2004 02:39:

yea id hope its just the records...

Posted by Dervish on May-21-2004 04:01:

If it's the same records, it'll more likely be the carts or cart connections rather than "temprature variations" esp. given that both records are at the same temp.....

Easy way to check btw, just flip the carts and records around in a logical fashion to find out.

Btw how bad is the diff? Take it can be covered by the gains ok?

dude that's almost the same problem i had w/ my empath last november. Instead of getting ahold of rane myself i gave the chore upon GC and they said they'll take care of it for me. Well let's just say i was without the mixer until around the 20th of january, and i found out it was in GC's possession for over 2 months. To make matters worse, nobody left any info about the problems so all rane was able to do was briefly test it and ship it back to me. Anyways the problem was a bad eq engage switch. And yes, i did get things taken care of. I just don't trust guitar center for helping with rma stuff anymore. Get ahold of Rane directly and expect to get it back usually around 5 days or less.

If you guys are wondering, "is this rane a bad mixer?" the answer is no!!! Even though i had some minor problems w/ a switch, the rest of the mixer has worked like a charm. The beauty of rane being built and serviced in the usa is if you live here you can usually get ahold of the tech that's working on it and discuss any concerns/problems with it.

Posted by dj chex on May-21-2004 06:01:

did you check the gains using a line level source like a cd player as well?

Posted by jwear2004 on May-21-2004 06:37:

Hmmm. I hope you reply back with some good news after you get it fixed or something, because I've been thinking about buying one at the end of the summer (after I strike it rich earning $7 an hour and working my ass off).

Posted by dj chex on May-21-2004 06:42:

Im sure rane will take care of you. They are one of those old-fashioned companys; Their not happy until your happy.

I wouldn't trade my empath for any other 3 channel mixer.

hm..i've had mine for a year and have had no problems whatsoever.

sorry to hear about urs tho...

Just a note...I have tried switiching records, truntables and needles but one channel is still louder then the other.

Sounds bad, try switching the whole table connection, and check the ground connection.

Thanks for all the ideas but I think I have tried every combanation.

Its broke!

how about buying another one from guitar center, then swapping the units and returing your faulty mixer.

You might have to find a way to serial numbers.

For all of you that have doubts about Rane Empath or any Rane, do not let this detract you from buying their gear. They are top notch and they stand behind their products. This was probably a 1 in a million shot that he got one with a *minor* problem that was easily fixed. My Empath is nothing but quality through and through. So go out and get one of these things...there worth every penny!!!

How correct you are! I love that thing!

One word - Smooooooooooooooooooooooooth

Posted by dj chex on May-22-2004 08:46:

Let it be known, i've had less problems w/ my empath than any other mixer i've owned. Rane is still the best mixer manufacter.

Posted by hooknife on May-26-2004 12:54:

I thought you guys would like to hear that I contacted Rane about getting my issues fixed and they said that my mixing board might be within spec. Rane said for their crossfaders to be within the acceptable threshold they can have a volume difference from channel to channel of 20%. He said I was welcome to send the mixer back to have them check it out but if they find that the volume difference from channel one to channel two is ONLY 20% they will NOT fix it and will send it back to me.

This is the 3rd Rane mixer I have bought and I will say that if Rane does not take care of this for me it will be my last.

Posted by dj chex on May-26-2004 18:02:

damn that sucks! Your problem still wasn't as bad as mine: right stereo channel would just crap out. Still i would send the mixer in. Have them check it out. And if you wanna make sure they'll find something wrong try to wear out one of the eq or line phono switches. That'll work

Yeah but if it is only 20% you can easy take that out with the gains though.
