King DJ'ing buzz

When I'm really tearing shit up on the decks, I get a huge buzz. Today I was mixing house and techno records really fast and playing around with tricks and stuff, and all over sudden when I took off my headphones it was 3 hours later, my heart was racing, and I felt like I was rolling... it's like a drug-free high.

Do you guys ever get that feeling when you're on?

My personal fav is when two records aren't matching up and you're getting so frustrated but then you get em matched and nail the mix...I'm constantly bobbing my head but when that happens I start doing the crazy dance and stuff.

my favorite is when you randomly put the pitch where you think it should be, and it turns out to be matched perfect. Or when you're playing a record from the end to find the first beat and it matches itself right there for you.

my favorite is when you're trying to pick the next best song ... and when you put down the record you didn't even have to move the pitch, thats how perfectly you picked the next song. (sorry its a little different from whats above)

See when that happends to me I get all paranoid that it can't actually be perfect even tho I know it is. Then when it is I get kinda bored, unless I have something to do drink/play with stuff and want to start mixing at inappropriate times.

But yeah I get the buzz it happens less often recently cos I'm getting pissed off at not being able to have the volume loud. But when the vol is high and tunes are going nothing beats it.

My biggest buzz was when I first mixed with actual consistancy for two hours. I taped it and listened to it still hyped up and it was next to perfect. Everything just flowed and nothing else in my life mattered. It was a great day. I still get that huge rush when the two records are mixing perfectly.

Hehe same here... i'm pretty much overexcited when all of my records fit in and all of my mixes are near perfect. I can also remember the first time i matched two records for the first time and damn, i had a huge smile on my face for an entire day

Sometimes i feel a huge rush of energy flowing through my body when i mix two perfect tracks (you know, those kind of tracks which you can't play one without playing the other)!

My face even turns red and i start to sweat immediately... Strange, but true.

feels awesome when u mix for an hour without any wrecks and have good transitions

I love it when you're 'in the zone' for want of a better phrase. I played at a competition last night and I knew I was on form so instead of cueing the record and checking I was enjoying the track with my headphones off and really playing to the crowd. Cos I knew that I'd be able to mix it in and that'd it'd be perfect. Them feelings are ace! I only had a few minutes left aswell so I thought I have to play my last track so I managed to mix it in early and it sounded soooo nice I was loving it! Just thinking about it makes me wanna get back on the decks!

I was mixing yesterday, with the volume up nice and loud. I had a perfect mix with perfect tracks... I was smiling, pounding my head to the beat, dancing my ass off, and had goosebumps all over. It was probably one of my best sets.

Posted by Inertia on May-25-2004 20:48:

my biggest buzz was when i was able to perfectly mix in a breaks track for the first time. it was Burufunk's Remix of Somnambulist, mixed into the Chris Fortier Dub of Fortunato & Montresor's Imagine. felt damn good. then, when i nailed Before You Break on Me into the mix, i was smiling for a good 10 mins.

and yeah, when you put on that next record, and it's kind of already pitched, i get paranoid, keep saying it can't be pitched perfectly off the bat... heh

tends to happen a lot with drum n bass records- they are often very similar speeds- ive done quite a few in a row that needed literally no adjustment.

my favorite thing is spinning when im stoned out of my mind
just fucking w/ fx, scratching, looping, etc.

just doing a bunch of shit, its always fun

i did that yesterday, recorded the set, and listening to it now

I hear you on that man, i do my best mixing when i've just smoked. I can just feel the music better and get into the groove.

Since I'm just beginning I tend to have a little trouble sometimes, earlier i took two records that I never tried mixing before because I didnt think they would, and low and behold it was one of the best mixes I've done yet.

yeah i used to mix better fucked up, but now that i've gotten better, i mix better sober

All the time! I generally session everyday right before I go to the gym; It completely energizes me to exercise. I get so excited and involved that I have to chew gum while I mix, or I will unknowingly clench the H*LL out of my jaw.

Wow, I just finished spinning, jaw hurts from clenching my teeth... and I read that you do the exact same thing .

Posted by stevebutabi on May-28-2004 02:44:

before the gym? wow... don't think i could do that... i'm buzzed after spinning, but i'm physically drained!

Posted by Psiweaver on May-28-2004 03:49:

I love the feeling when your just mixing and your mix just sounds incredible, going on pure instinct and your just rocking out loud having tons of fun, dancing and smiling at the amazing sounds coming out of your speakers. I can imagine its even better when you do this at a club and the whole club goes wild when the break hits on that perfectly mixed song.

Re: DJ'ing buzz

Each time I get up behind the decks, I become completely engulfed and I become my alter ego.

That's hilarious. I thought I was the only one who would chew gum while doing a set. And I do that for the same reason. Also, I do things completely opposite. I go to the gym first and then spin to unwind. It is kinda like a cool-down period for me. Working out kinda lets me take care of any stress and frustrations and then spinning just kinda helps me forget about everything all together. Perfect combination.

Yes having a good mixing session is indeed very energizing... but whenever I have an "off" day, it puts me in the worst mood and ruins the entire day. So usually I keep putting on new tracks forcing myself to continue so that I don't leave the decks completely pissed off.

haha yeah off days put me in a bad mood too
