Any career entrepreneurs here?
Are there any career entrepreneurs here? I'm talkin business owners / investors, real estate owners / investors, full or part-time traders, etc. Or hell, anyone who makes their living in some sort of an unusual way that would make for interesting discussions?
does opening a quiznos next month count?

I thought maybe you were lookin for somebody to open up a 24hr Condom shack with, for those "late night necessities"
rabbitjoker does .. and i guess u could consider Swamper as an entrepeneur as well ..
I ran my own fashion design business for 2 years (shut it down after having "issues" with my business partner) and would like to get back into working for myself again in the near future. Working for the man does not pay!
Business Entrepreneurship is where it's at baby!

Slave by day; Freedom by night
Self employed contractor, not exactly building a business at the moment, soon enough. Either way, not working for the man!

Originally posted by tw1tch Software training for Sun Microsystems. They run training throughout the world on their software/hardware line. 3 to 5 day instructor lead training classes. I fly wherever they need me to teach for 3-5 days at a time. Also work on developing the training manuals they use in those classes as well. So I have my own company and work out as a sub-contractor with another company, I get paid when I work and when I don't work I sit at home.

Originally posted by d!abolic Sounds pretty sweet. Why are you doing the training yourself though? You could hire some people to do the actual training and work on expanding the client base yourself.

Originally posted by tw1tch Doesn't work like that, it's not an open market and you need permission to get in from Sun. Only a select number of companies get contracts with Sun and you work through them. Not to mention, the insane amount of insurance required, that alone is $100K+/year. It's temporary, but no doubt still a much better position then working for the man IMO.
And the fact that you have to spend $8,000/mo on insurance is great because your competitors have to pay it too, so you're not in any danger (of spending more than they are), but since your (and their) profit margin is a percentage, the higher your (and their) expenses, the more you're making. To illustrate this, say all your costs got slashed down to $20 per hour of training so you'd be charging $30 and making $10. Now imagine if they soared to $200 per hour. You'd now likely be charging $275 if not $300, but definitely not $210
That's why when a supplier of mine wants to raise prices, i'm all for it. I simply switch to a cheaper supplier for the time being, temporarily leaving my competitors in the dust. Sooner or later, the other supplier will realize this and raise their prices too, resulting in an industry-wide price hike (since there will no longer be a cheaper supplier) which once again works for me since the hike will be (material cost increase) x 3, 2 of those 3 being profit.
I'll be opening my own health care practice in a few years if that counts.
i'm setting myself up to become an independent immigration consultant, with possibly my own immigration law practice or heading my own NGO for human rights i.e. refugees, asylum seekers in detention and torture victims. ...we'll see. it's a long shot there, but this is my goal!
no need to work for the man, if you can be the MAN!
p.s. i might need your guys' support one day for a fundraising event!
something along the lines of 'people for the people' ... what you think?
have my own small business out of my basement/office/slut room
...trying to start something of my own... all ideas and suggestions/partnerships are welcome.

Originally posted by d!abolic Is there good money in that? I hear some people in Europe paying ridiculous amounts (upwards of $10KUSD/person) to get here, but i think nearly all of that is bribe money
