They should abolish last call in Ontario

If they are going to ban smoking, they should at least offer a trade off to the hospitality industry by abolishing last call.

Most places in the world survive just fine without a last call. Why should the state tell me when i can and cannot have alcohol?

This law is just a left over relic from the days when this law was enacted to ensure that everyone went to church the next day.

This is the stupidest law ever! Instead of drinking, people end up doing drugs cuz no one wants to stay at a club sober til 7-8AM. So instead of collecting tax money off the drinks sold after 2AM, they're wasting tax money on fighting drugs. Idiots.

liquor laws are not on the books because they make sense they are there because politicians are cowards who are not willing to do anything conceived as risky!!!
Most people are in bed before midnite, and most people when consulted in opinion polls would say they they don't favor change because they don't see the need; hence the politicians who are vote sluts inaction on such issues.
Essentially it is governing by opinion polls. Imagine making noise bylaws based on the opinion of deaf people!!! Welcome to Ontario!!

keeps drunks from lingering? How so?

If anything it promotes binge drinking so as to beat the 2am deadline. And then in cases where the bars close at 2 or 2:30 id argue it actually helps PROMOTE drunk driving.

I think its time for our "socially progressive" nation to put its money where its mouth is.

This is why if young people voted more and made this an issue, politicians would have to listen to us and make changes...

Do they serve that at Guv, given that's it's Lebanese-owned?

Posted by disko-kandi on May-26-2004 22:12:

don't complain. in england it's 11pm in the pubs! so on a weeknite you can't go anywhere after that - unless you're in london, not in a small town where eveything outside pubs shuts down at 6pm, ... or u just bribe the 'fruiterer' after 3am! hehehe

at least in germany, france and switzerland etc. you can get alc 24/7 at any gas station.

LMFAO i wonder if anyone sees a problem with the fact that EVERYONE who ever buys ANYTHING at gas stations is DRIVING!

Its no different than everyone who goes into liquor stores, buys a bottle and then drives away.

I remember in mexico they had drive thru liquor stores. It does make sense. Just because you are buying booze in this manner does not mean you will drink it in the car anymore than getting out to get it and then driving away.

i would be quite happy if we just followed quebec's lead and sold beer and liquor in the corner stores 24/7 and had last call at 3am....ok, make it 4am

Posted by Jayx1 on May-26-2004 23:42:

Last call at any time of night is pointless...

Posted by torontobarfly on May-27-2004 01:33:

the bars sell til 3am,yes(the 4am was just wishfull thinking)...do the corner stores not sell 24/7....last labour day weekend i could swear we picked up beer from a store in the wee hours of the morn after coming out of a bar in the village...
