I'm too lazy to find out how much 400-500 AUD is in USD, but for a general idea of where to look, check out http://www.emu.com and http://www.m-audio.com/index.php . Both of those companies make superb sound cards that with careful selection, you can't go wrong with.

It might be a good idea for you to post some requirements that you need from the card also, e.g are you going to be using hardware, or just using it as a low latency out put for vsti's etc. If you need hardware inputs, list how many, and how many outputs, and any other odd requirements you have. I know of quite a few cards, and can probably point you in a pretty specific direction once you tell me what you need.

Good luck on your search,

es

thanx for that. looking at the web pages now, i probably won't be adding any extra hardware just yet. using fruity loops and a bit of Acid pro. gonna install reason soon and tinker with that. way down the track i would like to get a keyboard, maybe a roland one, but that's in the distant future.

The maudio audiophile is very popular, great sound quality, and has inputs and a midi interface for when you do buy that synth. It's about $150 USD new, or probably about $100 USD used (if you can find one).

Otherwise the new E-mu 1212M is a good choice, has better sound quality capability, but is $50 USD more ($200), but does have more toys.
