Best DJ or producer for sampling
I recently acquired the James Zabiela Essential Mix from February 04 and have been admiring his at times quirky sampling, the Daleks for example!
I was in the library revising for exams earlier and listening to William Orbit - Strange Cargo III, a minidisc I've had and been listening to very frequently for around five years and began to notice how much sampling he uses, almost continuously in one form or another, and very imaginative too
Any other nominations?
Sure, some easy, admirable candidates for obvious reasons, basically constructing whole songs out of a hodgepodge of samples and it sounds sooo cool:
DJ Shadow
The Avalanches
There are a lot of names I'm forgetting right now. I like the use of Nina Simone on BT & Tsunami One's "Hip-Hop Phenomenon" which was a really subtle but well-placed sample... one of those "Where have I heard THAT before?!?" moments that'll leave you scratching your cosmic head because the sample's been so warped.
Zabiela is showing a great sense of humor, I like that a lot.
Another obvious but good choice is Prodigy -- they've sampled more than a few of their well known beats, riffs, and hooks, and made them work in a new context... from the Art of Noise "hey hey hey!" in "Firestarter" to the Wu-Tang swords in "Breathe" to their first big single, "Charly" with its cat PSA.
Fat Boy Slim but the king of them all is either Coldcut or Tom Jedi Middleton.

Coldcut were the first really besides double dee and steinski to do it. Coldcut started Ninja Tune btw
listen to 70 mins of dj madness then tell me that they don't deserve it.

Southampton eh? You a fan of James Beattie??
Anyway i have to agree with aspergian that the Avalanches are great samplers, and they had great videos.
I would think that guys like Mixmaster Mike would be pretty sick with all the sampling and scratching and general craziness on the decks.
