Smoking in Clubs, revisted

So how are they going to handle smoking at clubs now? Are they going to building bigger patios? Like say for Tiesto (which I guess is in the Koolhaus) are they going to have a fenced off area for smokers, near the entrance?

Or make like a smoke room?

I tend to only really smoke when I'm out. I don't smoke at home and I don't smoke during the day @ work.

So - although I like a smoke at 4 am in a club - I guess this is good as it will keep me from smoking. So I agree w/ the ban.

However - I do feel the gov't shouldn't get rid of the smoking rooms as people have invested a lot of money in them - and if the gov't decides to they should repay the restaurants 100% of the costs involved in making said smoking rooms.

because it sounds like a lot of work to build a dsr (designated smoking room), get it approved and whatnot.
I'm interested if major venues sort of planned for this (which I imagine they would). But it would be also interesting to find out how quickly something like this can be done in Toronto.

so the firken pubs are introducing a new kids menu due to the smoking ban. A lot of sports bars are converting to family restaurants to try and save their revenue. Could this be a trend? Is Toronto about to lose what little edge it already had?

And now i read today that the health dept is really trying to get a smoking room ban for JUne 1 2007. I swear, these idiots need to wake up and smell the smoke of reality.

for what it's worth (which ain't necessarily much...but it's something for all the doomsayers claiming business are going to wither and die), from today's Toronto Star:

"Pub owners have reported few problems enforcing the ban, which was introduced March 29 in a country where around 30 per cent of adults smoke.

The Office of Tobacco Control report said that the number of non-smokers visiting pubs and bars has increased slightly since the introduction of the new law, while the number of smokers visiting has remained the same."

Well its not like I'm NOT going to Tiesto because I cant smoke at the venue. I'm just hoping that I still can. And hoping that when I bring smokes to a club, and forced to empty pockets, lo and behold, is a pack of cigs. And thus confiscated by whoever is working the door.

A sad day that would be.

Many magazines/newspapers are debating that the summer season gives the "smoke in the patio/skybar/outside area" ability, but when winter rolls back over, they're fuk'd.

They'll have to deal with converting an existing room into a dsr (which by law must consist of no more than 25% of the entire property, as I remember, but I could be wrong)...
Eventually the costs of such renovations if necessary, will be paid for by profits.. i don't doubt that.

Until the do gooders ban DSRs in 2 years...

nah, they won't confiscate them (I assume?), becaue you'll be allowed to smoke on the patio and stuff like that...

I'd say most clubs won't have TOO much of an issue developing an in/out policy for smokers...there are far more pubs and restaurants affected by the ban than clubs...although people tend to spend more time in a club than in a pub, for example.

either way...businesses are not going to suffer that much.

The thing that will make or break it is enforcement.

Last time around, it was mostly left up to staff to get ppl to butt out, and they got tired of the hassle after awhile due to the volume of smokers out @ night.

If the bar's get hit with fines, they may be a bit more pro-active in enforcement, but I think this will fall by the wayside yet again.

id love to see a club the size of guv, the docks or even system institute an in and out policy.... even better still is where all those smokers would stand to smoke since they cant block the sidewalk.... what mayhem that would be.

are you kidding me? Guv has to be the best equipped club in the whole freakin' city to deal with this new bylaw

They have a patio, a rooftop patio, countless other rooms that they could have designated as smoking rooms, and even if/when DSR's are banned too, they can fence off a section of the parking lot (like the already do) and use that as a confined in/out area. Guv isn't giving this a 2nd thought, I'm sure, LMFAO!

System...back room, ventilate it. Docks, ditto...they have TONS of space. Clubs will be inconvenienced, but to suggest that business will suffer to any great, lasting extent is an entirely different (and bullshit) argument

Im thinking ahead to when they ban DSRs and smoking on patios in 2 years like what the health dept is trying to get city council to do.

I dont think businesses will suffer that much until maybe the first spell of cold weather, and even then eventually people will just go, I guess everyone will just have to cope with it. As for the in/out policy at clubs, I highly doubt it will be that easy for every club to implement that into their system. Not every club is facilitated for easy access to outside unless its through their main front doors, and like most clubs are chaotic enough as is. Or you could find alternate exits but you dont want your customers wandering about the clubs in backways and sidedoors. This means you will have to hire people to watch these passage ways and entrances and also close them off to the public, which is way more hassle than to just say, either smoke outside or club inside, take your pick.

No smoking rooms? From what I was told, it was clearly cut and dry, no smoking inside clubs, and bars, any area that is enclosed. No matter what ventilation systems you have.

have faith guys...when money is involved, it's amazing what solutions businesses will come up with to ensure they survive and do well

As I said, I don't support banning smoking on patios or banning ventilated smoking areas...I truly hope they leave those alone.

Or are you just gonna stay home watch TV simply because you can't smoke in a club.. Clubs might suffer for first month or so. Then the business will pick up !

One cant put a workplace enviroment alongside a club environemnt, cause a. You have little clothes on, as you cannot just pick up your jacket from coatcheck then put it back after your done. (atleast not without paying) b. most people are sweaty and hot from inside a club, imagine going outside for a smoke in -30 weather? that aint gonna happen without you getting sick. c. work environment is different because you spend 30+ hours inside there, and smoking is not an option for all those hours, as opposed to a few hours at a club that you spend on night a week. I dont use the workplace non smoking laws as some sort of safeguard towards how clubbers will have to deal with the situation. The two are totally different things, not that business is gonna end as we know it, but I think there will be an affect within the first few weeks of this ban, especially when the cold spell its Toronto too. If anything it will only affect it for a few weeks at best, but eventually people will come around.

^^^ fair enough...the workplace is different from a club...most people (I say most, lol) spend less time at a club on any given night then they do at work on any given day. well...then this issue shouldn't be that big a deal huh?

The few people that won't go out because they can't handle the cold for the few minutes it takes to get their fix won't be missed in the overal attendance, I'll suggest.

like I said...I've witnessed it elswhere where it's been non-smoking for 3+ years...people simply smoke less...and those that MUST smoke just go outside, get their puffs in and go back in. It hasn't crippled this club, it likely won't cripple any other club or bar either.

I'm waiting for the innovative ideas clubs come up with that will also mitigate having to deal with so many in-outs...like higher cover to get an in-out wristband. Tack on even 2 bucks to anyone that wants one. If you smoke, $2 is nothing compared to what you spend on cigarettes, I'm sure. That should more than pay for 1 or 2 staff members to monitor in-out priveledges for the night, hahaha. BOOYAH! I just turned the ban in to a revenue *generator* for places like Guv

Actually back when the first smoking ban was introduced to bars and restaurants, there was a dip in the business for a month or so, I couldnt imagine this being any less so. Even then, who wants to party with people who dont smoke? they suck anyways :P nah nah na nah nah!

Im interested to see what extent they will go to enforce this new law. The idea of going to a club and not having to enhale 100 packs worth of second hand smoke is something i really look forward to experiencing. I hate coming home smelling like smoke. I hate coming home with burn holes in my shirts.
