Posted by OLi_A on Jun-02-2004 08:10:

its not for me
this girl i know got harassed on the way home the other night and she is a little scared now

Tell her to carry a can of hairspray in her handbag. As well as one of those personal alarms...

1) underarm deodorant, hair spray, or even spray-on oil for the kitchen are all good substitutes. kitchen oil is really nasty in your eyes.... less sting, but impossible to see.... also good for spraying on their hands and the ground in front of you

2) a swift kick to the knackers, poke to the eyes, or handbag to the solar plexus can be good in an emergency. kicking people when they're down is also highly recommended

3) longer term... self defense lessons are invaluable. they build self confidence, situational awareness, and last ditch techniques if running fails (running is mostly better than standing and fighting, but not always practical)

I am not sure how legal it is in Aus but you can buy it from a million places on the web.
here is one.

I'm also not sure about the companies policy on sending it overseas, but if you look hard enough I bet you will find somewhere that will post it to ya.

Choosing A Defense Spray

The demand for defense sprays has become so great that there are literally dozens of different types, brands and sizes that can become quite confusing. Only two types are worth considering for civilian self defense.

There are so many terms used to describe defense sprays that I would like to explain them. The terms oc (oleoresin capsicum) pepper spray, oc spray, oc pepper spray, pepper gas, cayenne pepper spray and capsicum all refer to pepper spray with oleoresin capsicum (an extract of pepper) as the active ingredient.

The term cn gas or cn tear gas refers to chemical tear gas. There are other types of chemical tear gases, but only this one will concern us.

You might also come across the term mace. At one time mace was a term that described a type of tear gas, but now it is used as a brand name. Mace Brand Pepper Spray & Tear Gas is one of the most most advanced defense sprays available, used by law enforcement across the world.

Comparative Analysis Of Self Defense Sprays

The two basic types of self defense sprays:

CN Tear Gas (Alphachloroacetaphenone)

OC or Pepper Spray (Oleoresin Capsicum)

OC Spray (pepper spray) is the newest of the two, by far the most effective. Pepper spray effects everyone differently but it is by far the most effective.

Different Effects Of Defense Sprays

CN is an irritant to membrane tissues. It causes stinging pain and tearing, and take from 5 to 30 seconds to be effective. CN causes profound tearing, but is only useful when used in a mixture with pepper spray.

OC is not an irritant. It is an inflammatory agent; and this makes all the difference in the world. When a person is sprayed with OC two things happen instantly. First, the person's eyes clamp shut, hard. Not only that, but if they do manage to force them open they still can't see because the OC dilates the capillaries and causes temporary blindness. Second, an immediate fit of uncontrollable coughing doubles the person over because the OC causes instant inflammation of the breathing tissues, restricting all but life support breathing. OC has the affect of putting up a brick wall between an assailant and the sprayer As one police trainer has put it, "It's like being hit with a flamethrower!" An assailant who's sprayed with OC stops what they're doing, stops what they're thinking - period. This is true even for those who are drunk, on drugs, or psychotic. OC works extremely well on animals, although most versions are not made for this purpose.

"You never go wrong with a fogger type pepper spray."

I asked Spang of the Gurner Agency his opinion on which pepper spray he would recommend to a client and this is what he had to say.

I recommend to my clients a defense spray that combines OC Pepper (capsicum) with CN Tear Gas. The CN causes profuse tearing and the OC Pepper Spray causes instant inflammation.
(See above)

I personally go with the Mace Triple Action Fogger because of it's stopping power and it's wide angel spray, eliminating the need for pinpoint accuracy. It's used by law enforcement agencies through out the country. It also combines OC Pepper with CN Tear Gas. If you have no idea what to purchase you can never go wrong with a fogger type pepper spray.

My next choice is Mace Pepper Foam. When an attacker is sprayed in the face it expands making it difficult to see. When he attempts to wipe away the foam, the pepper is ground into his eyes. Many law enforcement officers prefer pepper foam because the fumes from the pepper remain in the foam and the effects are felt only by the person being sprayed and not by the officers arresting or transporting a suspect.

Good advice i think

One puncture to a spray can and its all over, and its very unpleasant and uncomfortable when carried in pockets.

Why not use a stanley knife?...I've being using one for more than a decade. I've made tough guy's faces into chess boards. If not a stanley, try a flick knife.

That "tearing" sounds like it's doing some serious damage.

Not sure if this would be the best thing to walk around with. I mean, if everyone had it, it would be complete chaos....

Like imagine all the people with road rage?? You wouldn't want to keep your windows open at all any more in case some nut thinks ur taking to long in taking a right turn and decides the give u some through your open car window.

How about u just punch the person, if u do it right, they won't get back up. If u get the first one wrong, then try again. For females, statistics show that the majority of cases where girls fight back they get away without any injuries.

I'm pretty sure capsicum spray is illegal in Aust. Not 100%, but I'd be very surprised if you were allowed to import it or carry it around...

Posted by sezzy on Jun-04-2004 10:49:

why not turn to more traditional methods of self defence like a good kick in the groin?

Posted by webmeister on Jun-04-2004 11:33:

Sorta reminds me of my favourite pickup line:

"hey baby, does this smell like chloroform to you?"

Posted by astroboy on Jun-04-2004 12:56:

just get some extra hot shillis, boil the seeds in water to extract the hotness... or even better boil them in tobasco sauce and put the resulting mixture in a spray bottle. If the cops ask you why you are carrying it around, say it is a condiment you put on all your food.

Any sort of spray is illegal in SA - its classified as an offensive weapon, and your in deep shit if you get caught (although cops might let chicks off with a warning)
Most states have very similar offensive weapons lists.

I'd recommend a swift kick to the goolies. As a guy who played a lot of sport and got a couple of knocks there, it will lay you out pretty quick. Makes your face look kinda like

I do have a (female) friend tho that carries a stanley knife with her, kinda hard to explain away if you need to tho

Posted by webmeister on Jun-05-2004 02:01:

The trouble with most personal defence weapons like this is that unless you really know how to use them, an attacker can easily use them back against you...

Posted by G`Dave on Jun-05-2004 06:23:

Yep... sorry to say it but defence sprays are illegal here... and you'll get arrested to carrying one around in public.. similar sort of deal as knives.

You could try and order them in from overseas but I'm pretty sure they would be seized by customs. But I'm sure you can still get it from certain... non-offical channels (don't ask me.. I'd never get involved in such shadey dealings )

Or you could do a home made alternative which is less illegal but probably not as effective. there are many internet sites with recepies for a home brew pepper spray.
