Ladies night - Illegal

TRENTON, N.J. - The state's top civil rights official has ruled that taverns cannot offer discounts to women on "ladies nights," agreeing with a man who claimed such gender-based promotions discriminated against men.

David R. Gillespie said it was not fair for women to get into the Coastline nightclub for free and receive discounted drinks while men paid a $5 cover charge and full price for drinks.

In his ruling Tuesday, J. Frank Vespa-Papaleo, director of the state Division on Civil Rights, rejected arguments by the nightclub that ladies nights were a legitimate promotion. Commercial interests do not override the "important social policy objective of eradicating discrimination," he ruled.

The ruling specifically addressed the weekly ladies nights at the Coastline in Cherry Hill, but it carries the force of a court decision and applies statewide. Vespa-Papaleo said state officials would write formal rules after a public hearing.

The restaurant's attorney, Colleen Ready, did not immediately return a telephone message left Wednesday by The Associated Press.

Courts in other states have issued divergent opinions on such promotions.

Judges in Pennsylvania and Iowa have said similar events are illegal, but courts in Illinois and Washington state have said that ladies nights are permissible because they do not discriminate against men but rather encourage women to attend.

Good stuff...I'm kinda sick and tired of this "discrimination"

agree, good

in sweden there's also different age limits for different genders (for example women 18, men 20), always thought of suing them for that...

Well the way it works here is that usually if it's a ladies night it means that girls go in for free and men pay double - pay for the girls...i always thought it was BS and for sure discrimination...Never thought anyone would be sued cause of it...but i guess now it actually happened

Not really...I don't feel like paying 20 bucks to get into a club to see drunken girls...besides i've never seen a "ladies night" that is worth going to...every time there's a "ladies night" there are retarded girls and a ton of sausage looking for those "free ladies" lol...and it's usually REALLY YOUNG and underaged ppl anyways...

Lol read some of the comments before...

Besides do you really think that girls that don't go to clubs will go if it's free...do you really think it's a money issue...give me a break lol...clubs are saussage parties cause that's just how it is. Girls that go to clubs will get drunk and will pay....(mind you a lot of them dont pay anyway)...and girls that dont go won't go cause all of the sudden it's free...it's all a "gimik" <-- or however you spell that.

Yeah I guess so...it's just that i don't know even 1 girl (and i know a few ) who's decision what club to go to on a weekend relies on whether it's a ladies night or not...

IMO it's a "thing" to bring more guys in -- who will drink more -- pay more at the door -- will look for those "ladies".

I guess basically all i'm trying to say is that whenever i go to a club...i see no difference in ratios whether its a ladies night or not.
