First Peice of equipment

I have been playing for a while now with software and wanted to get a little more serious with musik making. Can you peeps guide me in what you think is a good peice of equipment that i can start playing with. I was thinking about getting a keyboard but the ones i like are in the $700-$1500 range. Now i dont mind getting this but if there is something else i should be concentrating on it would be nice to know!
