Splitting/marking tracks

Hi
this is probably a very basic question, and i am not even sure of the correct terminology.
when you download a full cd mp3, it is usually one long track, about 60-70mins long.
what software (pref free!) can you use to 'split' that big long track so that you can jump from track to track on play back, like on a normal cd album?

If you are using Nero or a program that supports .cue files, you can make one to split up the tracks. Cue files simply tell the laser where to split the tracks when there is only one music file being burned. Here is an example of a .cue file I stole from another forum.

PERFORMER "Paul van Dyk"
TITLE "Live"
FILE "Paul van Dyk (live).wav" WAV
TRACK 01 AUDIO
TITLE "For An Angel"
PERFORMER "Paul van Dyk"
FLAGS DCP
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 AUDIO
TITLE "Clear Blue Water"
PERFORMER "Oceanlab"
FLAGS DCP
INDEX 01 02:06:12

Naturally, you don't really have to know the name and artist of each track, I think that is more for CD Text, could be wrong.
If this seems like too much, which it shouldn't, you can go the non-free route and split it up with a program like soundforge

so if i burn a cd i sjould also burn the cue file and it will automatically tell the cd where the tracks are?

No, the cue file is something that Nero uses in order to know where to split the tracks (like an external set of instructions). Cue files are not burned onto a cd, rather they guide the burning process.

When burning, make sure the .cue file is in the same directory as the .wav file you want to split. Click on File->Burn Image...

Go to the directory, then choose the File Type: All Files (*.*)
Select the .cue file and then click on the Write button. Your CD will be made according to the info in the cue file.

i'll check out nero.

i have created cue sheets before, but didn't know how to use them. so even if i create cue sheet outside of my burning software, i can still use it to guide the burn process? ie if i use one program to create the cue sheet, and another to burn the cd, will it work as long as they're in the same directory?

Right, you can use notepad or whatever to create it, just make sure it is a straight text file.
