Review: Tiesto in San Francisco (June 4, 2004)
Here's what I posted on another board. To understand some of the info I speak of or criticisms I give, you have to know the clubs around here...I am just two lazy to write two seperate thought columns.
Anyhow, can't wait to see him again in LA tonight!!!
OK, here's how the night went for me...
1. 3 hour great set. No real journey on it though....just wa pretty hardcore straight through He played A LOT of tracks I have never heard of before. And he was playing hard banging stuff towards the end. He started at midnight, which kind of reeked since I got in at like 11:50pm and wasn't even set in the mood. Would have loved his set to be from 1am-4am and not 12am-3am. Anyhow, I was totally into Tiesto's set by the end of the first hour. He had the crowd in his grasp from the get go. I think he could have played disco music and the crowd would have went nuts.
2. The crowd was a definite mix. I heard the ususal "Who is that DJ!" and I even have backup on this one because Thomas (KRIMINAL on the Spundae boards) also mentioned to me he heard some people asking right when I was coing in. I believe his words, "Dave, you are so right about the crowd here!." What was weird is the back of the dance floor was CRUSHING. So many people -- it was as if they just thought the front would be worse so they stayed in the rear. But near the stage, a lot more elbow room and dancing room and it was easy to tell that people up there knew the music. Once I found my way up there, I was set for the rest of the night. The whole place was pretty much jumping the whole time and there was actually a pretty crazy vibe the further he got into his set. I think Tiesto actually reallly likes RS -- he seemed to be having a great time and jumping around. Damn how I wish that set was at 1015.
3. Tracks from Tiesto's new album, Just Be, sound AWWWWWWEESSOOOMMMEE in a club. Walking On Clouds (track he did with Josh Gabriel) in a club!!!! :eek :eek :eek :eek Even the ones I didn't expect to be great sounding in a club. I was frightened to see how many knew the words to the song "Love Comes Again" (BT on the vocals) when the album has just come out. The whole front half of the crowd was singing it. And I gotta give the track props - it's a fun track in a club even thought I hate listening to it on its own.
4. The sound: RS brought in some extra floor speakers which were noticeably there for bass. Lots of bass. It was actually very nice! The problem with sound system tonight is that the mids were pretty much unnoticeable. When Tiesto played "UR," a key part of the track that makes it so nice was barely hearable because it uses all mids and you could barely make it out on the system. The highs when in the middle of the dance floor were its usual slightly echoey self and basically made it feel like some tracks had an odd reverb effect. In the end, sound was the best I've ever heard it at RS, but they still could do a lot better. I hate being critical of sound sometimes instead of just enjoying the music.
5. The opening DJ (I think Bali): Don't know how he was, since I only heard like his last track. Didn't seem like a great track to end with before Tiesto, though. The closing DJ: Probably the opener again, and he was decent. After Tiesto finish, 80% of the people cleared out -- pathetic.
6. Seeing all you peeps. Good to see you Meg, Ish, Thomas, Vahan, and finally meeting limbelah (who I was hanging with quite a bit at the end having no clue it was even him). You are a cool guy! Also want to say hi to the others I met and have already forgotten who you were - I'm real bad about that.
7. Tiesto didn't horribly wreck once. Was rought when transition between tracks twice, but 99.999% of the people in there probably never realized it.
8. I would say his shortened set back in October (he got to the Mezz late because of fires in san Diego) was still better besides the records skipping when the crowd was jumping so hard - but I think Gabriel & Dresden playing an amazing opening (and lengthy) opening set made that night though....still haven't heard G&D spin as well as they did that night...dunno what was in them!! Still say the best set I've personally heard from Tiesto here was on Nov 1, 2002... But Tiesto is still here and proved why he is the DJ god he is.
Nice Report!
