PvD is back - Vandit Night June 4 2004 *review*

As a special service to the UKTAs in attendance, here is a review in English

Vandit Night, Casino Berlin, June 4, 2004
11-2 PvD
2-4:30 Sasha
4:30-9:30 PvD

This was exactly what I had hoped for - another PvD "comeback". He had started to disappoint me in the past and always came back with a vengeance. Though this time the disappontment had been bor intense, and much longer, over half a year. So I went to this Vandit night with very mixed feelings. The last one in April had sucked (in relative Vandit Night terms). On top of that, I wasn't feeling much like partying, being pretty tired on this Friday for no real reason, other than the default culprit, the weather

Anyway, having been forced to book an unusually late flight I got to Casino at about 11:30 pm to some ponding beats. Good start, I thought. After greeting Metro and our buddy Jamil and some others I got on with the business of dancing. the first 2 hours or so were a superb progressive set, very hard beats, very danceable, very un-PvD if you will. Excellent. The last half hour to an hour before Sasha was a bit slower, not as compelling. That was OK though.

At 2 am Sasha came on, opening with the same track as in Amsterdam 2 weeks before. He continued with a rather boring intro of about an hour, of course including breaks. But then he got it going and continously increased the intensity of his set, now very danceable. The crowd liked it and he actually overplayed by half an hour, which rarely ever happens at a Vandit Night. By the end of his set, he kicked ass.

4:30 back to PvD. The first hour was kinda nondescript. But again after an hour, he got it moving for real. No cheeze, no fluff, just hard, dry beats, which we decided was tech-trance. Awesome! Again, pretty un-PvD compared to past sets, but nevertheless just awesome! He did play a few classics, or should I say Casino classics, including Maurice - Feline (one of my all time faves), Alanis Morissette - the Couch (PvD remix) as well as PvD - Forbiden Fruit 2003. The classics were few, though, increasing their effect. Otherwise, all unknown (at least to me) tech-trance tracks with this deep, hard beat. He kept that pace throughout until the end just after 9:30, leaving me fully satisfied

I was glad he finished as I had to leave anyway to catch my return flight to Frankfurt.

I seems PvD has come to grips with his "new style", finally making a fantastic set of it. Other points to note in this context: no repetitions, no Nothing But You, no Time of Our Lives. Only Crush, just once.

Cheers for the review Andreas, it was really a fantastic night; the best Vandit night I have experienced yet. For starters, it wasn't overpacked at all like it usually is. I'm assuming this was due to the techno party happening quite close to Casino. There was actually room to dance and it wasn't tooo hot.

We arrived at about 12ish I think, and Paul was just getting going from what I could tell. Quite progressive like you say. Until a few months ago, apart from a few GDJB sets over the years, i'd never really seen a proper warmup set from PvD, and in February I was quite impressed. So i was looking forward to this one too.. He played many nice trancers and progressive builders, and finished on one of my favourite tracks from 2003: Contact (PvD Rework). Also quite near the end he threw in Wavy Gravy to get us in the spirit of Sasha

Sasha really impressed me. I find him a bit hit and miss, sometimes him being really good and sometimes utter wank. But this time he was mint and played some really dirty tracks and proper nice breaks. Apart from the odd slipup, his mixing was generally well good.

PvD's second set though was out of this world. After a quick plug of his new track and some random Armin fanny trance, he really got going. Some superb tech-trancer's, some awesome classics from the 99 and before era, the one that killed me the most being Argonauts - Fruhlingstag. And to finish off we got to hear some really vintage PvD tunage like Forbidden Fruit, Couch, etc. Stunning set.

pvd played kuffdam and plant summer dream 3 times in one night?

Posted by DJ Mikey Mike on Jun-08-2004 16:40:

Yea it's his new Vandit toy. It's pretty crap, and will no doubt become the next Crush / Introspection / Holding Onto Nothing that he just won't stop playing for months and months.

I wish... I gave a shout to the guy on Sasha's website about a recording or at least a tracklist, but that'll obviously never happen.

I wouldnt take it to heart mate, everyone has their own opinions about music.
However, just because someone doesnt know enough about music to make a track doesnt mean they can't criticize someone else's track (as long as the criticism is constructive).

Good luck for the future anyway, JooF played your remix of Li Kwan - Point Zero at crasher a while back and it sounded quite good

Now let's all chill

I know. And Vandit used to be about quality, not quantity. Those were the days.
