FYI: How to get Euro 2004 on the internet

For those of us living in the US, we're getting screwed with Euro 2004 TV coverage. Setanta bought the rights, and they're showing the games individually on pay-per-view for something like $179 for all of them. (You can watch them on Fox Sports World on a 3-day delay for free).

No freaking way I'm paying $179. So I found a link on euro2004.com, and you can buy the live feed over the internet for all of the games - $14.95 total price. Much better deal. Yeah, it's with the crappy RealPlayer, but the feed seems pretty good quality.

Just thought the USA TA's would like to know if they're interested in watching.

For about three years (and for Euro 2000) I had a grey market ExpressVU dish so I could get a ton of sports that weren't shown in the US. The CBC also had live Olympics coverage, rather than distilled crap that NBC was giving us at the time. But I gave up the dish last year, since I was paying through the nose for a third-party to set me up with a Canadian address.

I would have suggested the system as another way to get Euro 2004, but by the time you were done buying the dish and setting up the grey market account, it would have been quite a bit more than $179 - and thus worth it just to buy the PPV package instead.

I remember "Setanta" showed a couple of our european games this year. The first game against Partizan Belgrade (first game of our season) we had to watch the whole game without sound because Setanta had a 'technical fault' and on a few occasions the screen completely froze. Unacceptable for a pay-per-view service. $179 is a joke, everybody in Europe gets every single game for free.

Are there not pubs over there who will tune into European channels and put the game on a big screen? A lot of English Premier League games are on Norwegian/French TV so pubs in Britain tune into these channels (illegally, but every pub does it) and watch the game with foreign commentary. I know football's not that big over there, but surely some pubs do this?

is it just audio or can we actually watch the games..and can we watch the games anytime?

Yeah, there definitely will be. It's always good business for American pubs because the games are on in the late morning or early afternoon, and the games draw people in when the bar would normally be empty.

Real.com is somewhat cryptic about this, which leads me to believe that it's only live audio. But it also appears that the games will be available with video at any time thereafter. It will be interesting to see how it works.

we have a hacked express vu at home... i cannot believe you cant have the same down there!!! express vu = dish network
