transitions (xfader vs. channel levels)

How do all of you make your transitions? Do you use the xfader or the channel levels?

I used to only use the channel levels and keep the xfader in the middle, but I realized that didn't sound too well. Now I strictly use xfader and it's been great.

channel levels, gives you a lot more control. not to mention you can play with 3 or more things at once, ie. mixng in a track and an acappella at once...

Posted by dj chex on Jun-09-2004 19:05:

i mostly use the channel faders when i mix. in the past i've mostly depended on the cross fader, but i like the control and sound of up faders instead.

For mixing, I will use the channel fader but for tricks I use the cross fader.

I use channel faders myself. My mixer has an optical scratching crossfader on it, which is unadjustable, so it enforces my use of the upfaders

I use the channel faders.

me too. not much more to say on the subject really

I use the channel faders exclusively when mixing, haven't actually tried using the crossfader since back when I first bought my decks.

The funniest thing is that you bump into the occasional DJ that does prefer to use the crossfader (not counting turntablists), and it sometimes goofs up the person that is taking their turn afterwards on the decks.

Yup ... when I started I used the cross fader, but it doesn't give anywhere near the controle of the channel faders.

So I started using the channel faders exclusively. Until recently, now i've started using the cross fader with the channel faders. I've been playing more housey stuff and sometimes it sounds really nice to cut the incomming track for a bar and then slam it back in using the crossfader.

One thing with the channel faders is its usually not a good idea to have both tracks going at full volume cuz then the mix is much louder then when just 1 track is playing. This can be compensated for by cuting back with eqs or not having both channel faders at full.

Channell Faders for me, and I got nothing new to add to this thread that hasn't already been said.

Only channel faders

For the same reasons... it gives more control

Posted by djeclipse on Jun-10-2004 09:06:

I use channel faders for mixes but the crossfader for cuts and tricks.

Posted by tu_face on Jun-10-2004 10:50:

yeah channel faders to bring tracks in and out usually (sometimes use the x-fader, depends if i want it to be a quick removal), but x-fader for cuts and tricks.

Posted by AndskiSpeed on Jun-10-2004 12:19:

Channel faders, but I'll use the xfader if i'm messing about scratching or something

Posted by Nemesis44 on Jun-10-2004 15:07:

Channel faders for control. For added control I then work the crap out of the gain and bass eq. Never touch anything else (Not counting effects) unless I'm scratching.

Cheers

Havent touched the X fader in about 2 years- not once. Even for scratching or beat juggling.

Purely channel faders and loads of eq fun.

you never use the mid & hi eq's? curious..

i guess its all about what you are doing with it tho, i sometimes find it sounds a lot better if you fade a track out with the eq's before the fader.

i personally wouldn't touch the gain while i'm in a mix, i think it would be too easy to fuck up the levels that i've spent time setting correctly

Posted by DJAntSmith on Jun-11-2004 09:56:

used to be the X-fader. Then both. Now channel faders all the way.

I always EQ out a bit before bringing the fader down.

But on the odd time it is nice to increase the gain.

Posted by Psiweaver on Jun-19-2004 04:26:

channel faders with some eq stuff.

Posted by Boomer187 on Jun-19-2004 04:40:

i just use the eqs. forget everything else :P.

Posted by Inertia on Jun-19-2004 06:50:

simple, channel faders all the way. i mean, after you do that backspin, all you can really do is slap the volume fader down.

Posted by djtrinity on Jun-20-2004 04:38:

of course i must be the odd ball.......i started out on knobs/sliders for 4 years .....then for the past 2 i have been on the x fader.....say what u want i find it much easier to work with.....and i always have 1 hand free......alot of crossfaders out there are shit....but get a high end adjustable curve one and i love them....the best ones i have used are on the pmc 46 mk2, rane 2016, and on my 92......the crossfader on the 62 is wack....the pioneer600 is ok the 500 is no good forget the vestax 27 series.......

the crossfader is designed to make a djs life easiar.....but everyone seems to think they have to do it the harder way to"be better" or because they get better control......like i said i was on channel faders for 4 years then went to the xfader for the past 2......i get better control with the crossfader....

the second post mentioned using the channels for an acapella? how do you do that?
