salt = sodium chloride, so no. Pure sodium is needed.

we used to do this all the time in chem class...it makes such a big explosion for little piece of stuff that looks like a lump of dough.

once, we put a bit into a plastic container full of water and the container shattered when it exploded and a bit got stuck in a guys eye and he sued the uni. *sigh*
