Smoking ..umm..something Green light for Euro fans to smoke dope

quote:
Police in Portugal have reportedly said that England supporters will not be arrested for smoking cannabis in the streets during Euro 2004.

A massive police operation has swung into action as thousands of English fans make their way to Portugal to follow Sven-Goran Eriksson's men.

More than 2,300 banning orders have already been issued in a bid to prevent potential troublemakers from going to the finals and more are expected to be put in place.

And while Portuguese police will be on the lookout for drunken behaviour, they are set to follow the approach used by the Dutch when they policed the English during the last European Championship finals in 2000.

A Portuguese police spokeswoman said: "Everyone knows that everyone here can smoke. The police are doing another kind of job and their priorities are different.

"We won't be hiding behind doors waiting for someone to smoke a joint. We have to use common sense. If people are smoking but not kicking each other, and not making a problem, why on earth would an officer go and ask 'Is that cannabis?'."

Technically, consumption of cannabis is illegal in Portugal but police will not act except in extreme circumstances.

Up to 30,000 are expected to attend England's Group B opener against France in the 65,000-capacity Estadio da Luz on Sunday - tickets are changing hands for as much as 330.

There have been no arrests or misbehaviour reported so far in Portugal.

England always unfairly get the reputation of being hooligan fans. They're not the only ones, but I hope nothing happens. WC 2002 was a good example set by the English fans...you can call them crazy, but I'd say they are the most loyal and passionate of any nation.

Unfair my arse

I think the general rule is, as long as we don't lose, or win any matches, there wont be any violence.

Apparently there was violence before the Spain v Russia game with Spaniards causing trouble.

Wonder if UEFA will threaten to kick Spain out? Yeah, right!

exactly! Remember when the Turkish fans were spitting on the English players as they took the field? That's disgusting....German and Dutch fans have got into it a few times before...but everybody always seems to jump the gun on England. It's that Sepp Blatter...he hates England and personally engineered it so that Germny, not England, got to host WC 2006.

dude shut up england had like 0 chance to host the world cup (worse than morocco) , it was a battle against south africa and germany , and germany knew how to steal it at the end.

zero chance? The former UEFA head backed England's bid. They haven't had it in 40 years, but Germany had it in 1974. England ran very good tournaments in 66 and the 96 Euro and have some of the best stadiums in the world. How is that zero chance? It's zero chance because a lot of members in FIFA and UEFA have biases toward them, especially the current head Blatter. It was him who demanded Ferdinand be suspended for 8 months for missing a drug test.

Africa deserves one, and now they have it for 2010. But the next time it comes back to Europe, it better be going to England.

England had an outside chance of hosting WC 2006 until the trouble in Charleroi during Euro 2000 which put a big black mark against our name, as well as UEFA's warnings to exclude England. After that we had no chance.

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jun-14-2004 00:49:

But Euro 96 went extremely well in England...no problems, great stadiums, great attendance, the best security measures in place. They deserve the WC next time it comes back to Europe...who else can take it instead? All the big nations have had it recently.

I haven't seen any reports of hooliganism after the loss to France yet so here's hoping all goes well. It's really the few idiots who ruin it for everyone.

No trouble in Portugal yet. The police banning orders seem to be doing the trick as all the arrests were made in England. Let's hope it stays this way.

quote:
Police across England made 83 arrests after fans rioted following England's Euro 2004 loss to France.

Some 400 people were involved in disturbances in Croydon, south London, where police were pelted with missiles and 12 people were arrested.

Another 12 people were arrested in Birmingham after a crowd of 200 caused trouble around the city centre.

This was in sharp contrast to the scene in Lisbon, where England supporters remained peaceful.

One supporter was reportedly arrested for allegedly punching an employee at the Lisbon stadium.

And one was handed a suspended jail term and deported following an earlier attack on a French supporter in Lisbon city centre.

Police in Croydon said disturbances there erupted at about 2215 BST on Sunday and continued for about an hour.

Missiles

Two police officers suffered minor injuries and several police vehicles were damaged.

Supt Nick Jupp, of Croydon Police, condemned the violence, saying: "It is totally unacceptable for police officers to be injured as a result of a small minority of people reacting to a football result in this manner."

In Birmingham, police had to close off parts of Broad Street for 45 minutes after disturbances broke out at about 2150 BST.

One man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The violence involved fans who had been watching the match on a big screen in the city's Centenary Square.

Damage was caused to several pubs, a bus and various hoardings, while several people played football in the main carriageway of Broad Street which led to the road closure.

There were 17 arrests in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and 31 across Hertfordshire.

And a further 11 were held after two police cars were set alight in Boston, Lincs, and a group of up to 60 people threw bricks and bottles at police.

By contrast, the atmosphere in Lisbon was relatively muted, with many fans still in shock after losing the match in the final minute.

Of the 30,000 England fans thought to have descended on the city, most either gathered in bars to commiserate peacefully or else returned to their lodgings for an early night.

The mood contrasted with the scenes on Sunday afternoon before then game, when hordes of expectant red and white-clad fans brought a festival atmosphere as they gathered for the match in venues around Portugal's capital.

Deported

Even Lisbon's Rossio Square, which had been the focus of celebrations ahead of the game, was unusually quiet in the hours that followed, BBC News Online's Duncan Walker, in Lisbon, said.

But one England fan was deported from Portugal following an assault on a Frenchman on Saturday.

Alan John Walker, 29, from Leek in Staffordshire was given a 12-month suspended sentence and a fine of 2,000 euros at a Portuguese court.

He has been banned from returning to Portugal for 12 months.

But the mood of most fans following the France game has been more sombre than belligerent.

In the Docas nightclub sector on the Lisbon's waterfront, police kept a low-key presence.

"So far, so good," one officer said, holding up crossed fingers.

Home Secretary David Blunkett, who was at the match, said afterwards: "Like every other supporter I am bitterly disappointed at tonight's result but I am also very proud of the good behaviour of the vast majority of England fans who are in Portugal to see the tournament."

Missiles, as in flying exploding projectiles???

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-15-2004 12:56:

Missiles are anything that fly through the air, journalists like to say it a lot but it is confusing.

Although in south London who knows? Maybe they were missiles

Posted by SPANIARD on Jun-15-2004 13:05:

Hmmm, I think while alot of you are trying to say how exagerated the media make hooligans look, I still must remind you that England haven't earned the reputation of being the most obnoxious, unbahaved fans for nothing. Ofcourse there are always other nations with problems, but England shoots themselves in the foot everytime they send fans abroad, the results have already shown Saturday night.

I'm sorry to anyone who disagrees with me, but give the press, the tournament officials and the police no reason to give extra attention to you, then you would have a clear argument. The other thing I hate about English Hooligans is that they always crash people's parties, except when they tried that in WC98, 'La 12' of Boca that were following Argentina showed them how to fight....

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-15-2004 13:19:

What more do you expect England to do about our fans?

English stadiums are some of the safest in Europe, in many stadiums people can't smoke or drink, and you are not even allowed to stand up in case you start a riot

We have made so many sacrifices to satisfy European concerns and yet there is absolutely no acknowledgement of this. It's getting beyond a joke now. Maybe some of you should try coming to England and try to harmlessly enjoy yourself in the stadium, see how long it takes before the nearest policeman/steward has a word in your ear.

I haven't seen anywhere else police their stadiums so strictly that people are told to sit down and will have their ticket allocation threatened if they don't!

We have got our own fans under control, but when they go to your country all hell breaks loose. What more can we do about that? Maybe, just maybe, the problem is at the other end?

Yeah but where are all the news stories about the German fans throwing chairs etc at Dutch fans in a square in Porto.

Like that will get 1% of coverage that the England fans will

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-15-2004 13:55:

I hadn't heard about that until you just mentioned it.

On the news they only mentioned the trouble with English fans in Albufeira.

Posted by RubiK Cube on Jun-15-2004 14:29:

They mentioned it on the Radio 1 news, aint been able to find anything bout it on the net as yet
