DJ Tiesto @ Avalon, NYC 6-12-2004

Tiesto was AWESOME! He went on around 1:15ish and played until 4:45ish. Just got back...my ears are ringing. He dropped some awesome tunes... I can't remember half of them at the moment but the ones I do remember are:

DJ Tiesto - adagio for strings
DJ Tiesto - nyana
DJ Tiesto - traffic
DJ Tiesto - forever today
DJ Tiesto - love comes again
Whiteroom - the whiteroom
DJ Ton TB - dream machine

Does anyone have a full tracklisting?

-Keith

Tijs fuckin rocked tonight. Avalon is WAYYYY to small for him tho, so fuckin hot on the 2nd floor. One funny fuckin part was when tiesto hit the dj who opened before him in the head when the guy started putting his head down inside the booth.

Great way to start my summer... now must sleep a couple of hours before my grad party starts.

By the way, although it took MUCH work, I managed to slip him Sean Tyas' cd. The fuckin lighting guy wouldnt take it for so long because he thoought i was tryin to get an autograph...but finally i got through to him. Couldnt really meet any TA's cuz it was WAY too packed.

Cant wait til Summerstage!

Avalon was quite an interesting time for me...

First, Jenn (my girlfriend) and I got to the city really quickly, it usually takes me about an hour from where I live, and she lives 20 minutes east of me... but, from her house, we got to NYC in about an hour, we made fantastic time... I thought I was gonna be late - I kept on trying to decide what to wear (do I wear my Tiesto shirt, something fancy, do I wear slacks, etc), cuz even though we both had tix, we didn't want to take the chance.

Got to the city, found a place on 5th and 21st to park... paid the parking charge, then we walk over by 6th and 20th... saw a TON of places we could park for free :P Ugh... Then, before going into the club, we decide to get some food... We walk past Starbucks, some crazy guy runs up to the window there and starts banging on it. We turn around, and it's my old college roommate, Chris! I haven't seen him in a while, but he's from Queens... he was just hanging out in the city and meeting up with his brother at Bar None (a craphole I've been to before with him :P) It's one of the world's largest cities (16th I believe), yet I always run into people I know there!

So, we go to eat with him at a diner, and then I'm out of money... so we parted ways and went back to the car to get some more. The guys at the parking garage put our car up on top, so they had to lower the car. We get the money, go to the club... wait on line for 20 min. I talk to some people, they tell me that Crobar is a lot better than Avalon (which at least is good news, seeing as I haven't been there yet). Then, we get to the front of the line, Jenn tells me she left her ID in the car :P The bouncer wouldn't even let her in, even with the tickets (plus, if you saw some of the girls on the line who looked about 12, Jenn very obviously looks over 18). So, we wait in line for half an hour, get told we can't go in, so we had to go back to my car (again) to get her ID... we got it, and when we got back, the line got a LOT longer... we waited about an hour to get in. They were sending people home without tickets, which I guess was kind of a good thing - since a lot of people wouldn't have took the time to go online to order tickets, so the majority of the audience was Tiesto fans, not a bunch of honky guys and slutty girls from a generic suburb in Jersey going out clubbing in NYC "cuz it's the cool thing to do". One kid behind me on the line said - "I hate it when people go into this club and don't even know who the DJs are". He was dead on.

Finally, we got in, with no problem at all once Jenn had her ID. The guy who sent her away before actually remembered her when he was checking IDs... he was like, okay, I see you got your ID. We had no trouble with the bouncers at all. We got into Avalon, and headed for the bathroom. The place looked pretty cool, a giant converted church, with a ton of nooks and crannies. One of the bathroom was pretty cool, with guys and girls rooms looking kind of like cubicles, with a common area filled with fancy looking metallic sinks. There was even a girl DJing, playing housey stuff, in that bathroom.

We get out to the balcony, and caught Eddie Lee at the end of his set... heard him play Girls Can Be Cruel by Infusion, then Tiesto came on, and the place went WILD!

You can tell that a lot of the people in the audience were (thankfully) Tiesto fans... The place had a decent vibe to it (which I was scared that it wasn't, that was by far my biggest fear). The crowd was chanting TI-ES-TO! and screaming and the bottom level was going wild, it looked like the Zion rave in Reloaded down there We found a fantastic vantage point... in the lower right corner of the balcony level, right up against the railing. We got a great view of Tiesto, sure we couldn't make out his face detail very well from that far back, but we could see him changing records and dancing around. Tiesto seemed much more into it than when he came to the Roxy last year, he was dancing, using his records like a fan, all that fun stuff he does He played a great set, filled with a classic trance vibe (I thought I heard one or two techno tracks in there, by the time we left). He played a LOT of stuff off Just Be, which is good, since I was familiar with a good amount of the songs he played.

After the (unbearable) heat took its toll on us, we decided to move around the club a bit, we found a nice chill spot on like the third floor, and hung out a bit there. The Spider Club I think it was called. There was also a room that had this black ribbed cushions that surrounded the whole room, with glowing multicolored lights on a white background for the wall. You could get bottles of wine and shit there, but alcohol bottles went anywhere from $250 - $1000. We wanted to order something really expensive, and not pay :P

The place has a bunch of nooks and crannies, small rooms where you can't see anything, but it's really cool and you actually get an air flow... We got lost a couple of times going back and forth :P Then we went back to the balcony, as Tiesto started playing Nyana, Forever Today, and some other great songs - very emotional, epic trance. Classic Tiesto. The place was in an absolute frenzy... I told Jenn, when would you ever see the crowd that absorbed into the . So yeah, the vibe was a LOT better than I thought, I was totally getting into it too and she had a good time as well. The only other club she went to with me was Danny Howells at Arc, and this was a lot different in terms of audience participation and music style.

So yeah, about 4:45 we both took off, we weren't too tired, but I still had to drive all the way back to Farmingville, then back to my house in Nesconset. And our feet started to hurt like hell. We both wore shoes :P

Overall, Avalon was an okay clubbing experience, I doubt I'd go back, unless there was a big DJ with presale tickets, so for the most part, true fans would be there. The place was extremely hot and extremely crowded - people kept on bumping into me when I was on the balcony. Nobody gave me any attitude and just left me alone, I didn't really interact with too many people at the club, we just minded our own business, but the ones I interacted with seemed like they knew their stuff - i.e. talking about how fantastic Sander was last night at Crobar, how they liked the album, their favorite Tiesto sets downloaded off the net, etc. Tiesto was utterly fantastic - mixing left a bit to be desired at some parts, but other times, he was flawless.... He was really into it, playing straight up quality trance, no beating around the bush at all. Probably the second best out of the 3 times I've seen him (nothing will quite top Area 2 for me though).

Alright, soon I guess it's time to check out Crobar!

Keep the reviews coming. So far all the stories meet my expectations - he played close to 4 hours. Only ticketholders got in. It was immensely fire hazard crowded. The club was nice. The crowd was meh, but people had a good time.

Posted by vtec junkie on Jun-13-2004 15:57:

^^^^We need more reviews like that around here. Good job bro.....glad you and your girl had a good time. Its good to hear that there was some kind of vide @ Avalon regaurdless of its size and how packed it was. I soooo friggin pumped to see TIESTO @ Space on friday. WOOOT WOOOT!!!!!

Posted by DJDREO on Jun-13-2004 16:05:

Mr Game+Watch thats one hell of a review. Hehe good one. Its almost like im there.

Posted by nerve on Jun-13-2004 16:20:

aweeeeeeeesome..... tiesto definitely blew the place up. People chanting, people singing along with "Love Comes Again" and everything else. Agreed that avalon can't hold Tiesto. Everyone knew it, but everyone still went. I didn't wanna miss out regardless of how crowded I expected it to be. Lots of fun. My only problem was with the crowd. People were being stupid about how they were dancing and many people were trying to push others away. Like not just bumping but actual pushing and hard mosh style hits. Almost got into it myself with someone cause he pushed my girl on purpose and I asked him to just chill and he continued. Otherwise it good night.

Sounds really interesting! Could you make some tracklisting please? I'm so curious...

I just woke up... my ears still hurt!

Why can't I remember him playing Yin (Solid Globe Remix)???

i was really psyched about this night and it was OK...it would have been much better if i was able to breathe..that club sux ass..no ventilation what so ever..iv'e been to parties that were just as packed as tiesto was last nite and i was still able to breathe...i ended up leaving at 4am, because there was no point to staying there when i felt like i was suffocating!

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Jun-13-2004 17:02:

nothing beats tiesto's nyc debut @ limelight for its gatecrasher party..i literally died that night...but i can sympathize with LL being a firehazard...lols u'll definitely not make it out of that place alive...

Posted by partyhopper on Jun-13-2004 17:02:

I found some spots with lots of space for dancing, and good ventilation...
but I couldn't see Tiesto, the crowd (except for the mob right outside the booth, trying to either get in, or get something signed), the lights, or the videos from there

If I remember correctly, Tiesto didn't play much new stuff, i.e. that most of us (or at least I myself) haven't heard yet or too often.
He sure did get the place going when he played Love Comes Again. I thought his set was lacking flow in the first hour, but it did get better afterwards.

Also, props to Eddie Lee, the resident DJ who opened and closed. Too bad he's not on TA (yet, AFAIK). His sets are always quality, but he played on another level on this night. Amazing how much the crowd responded to his sets. When he ended at 6:45 am, there was enormous applause from the floor. One person told him that he played better than Tiesto. Remember his name because you'll be screaming it all night.

Why did the club still have the hip-hop room? With the event being ticket-only, with the kind of prices there were, were hip-hop heads really still going to go? How many of the people who came for Tiesto had any interest in hearing hip-hop in the course of the night? I think it would've been better if it had the music linked from the main floor, for the crowds to spill into.

Posted by GUBostonDubs on Jun-13-2004 17:21:

Eddie Lee used to spin in Embassy and filled in once for the residents opening for Mauro Picotto up here in Boston.Hes a great guy and a developing dj.

You're ears are ringing because Avalon's system is terrible. So much distortion.
