Driving Licence
Hey all, just quickly, I recently got a new car, well newer than my 86 Laser.. hehehe.
Anyways this one was auto transmission, but now my new one, Corolla SX, its a manual, I can drive it and all but if i get pulled over is it illegal because im only on my red P'z and i did the driving test about 10 months ago in an auto car???
is it that after 1 year u can drive watever car? Be either auto or manual?
I would call RTA but they are closed atm, hmm... maybe i can call the cops, they might know.
not sure if NSW has different laws to VIC but...
i know in VIC that if your Ps are for an automatic, you cannot drive a manual car. but if you have a manual license, you can drive both (well duh).
although once you're off your Ps, regardless of what your probationary license was for, you can drive both types (without going for a retest).
mm reading RTA site, are you on a P1 or P2 license?
if you're on a P1 license, you can only drive an auto (since you took the DART in an auto). if you have a P2 license, you can drive both.
read here.
Below, is for P1 licenses only

| Be restricted to driving an automatic transmission car or clutchless manual (depending on the vehicle in which the DART is undertaken). |
Im on my P1's.
So wait, does this mean that in August, when i go for the P2 test i can drive watever, without having to do a restest in a manual car, cause i looked at the site b4, but not really explaining much, either that or im too tired from studying...
Btw, wtf is a clutchless manual?
if you pass the hazard perception test, you will have your P2s, and thus be eligible to drive both auto & manual (this is what i've gathered from the RTA site).
a clutchless manual is for pansies! often referred to as 'pussy manuals'. used to be found in only upmarket european cars (think bmw, mercs, audis etc). but now some higher model jap cars have them too. its exactly as the name says, you have full control over what gear you want your car travelling in, but when you change gears, you just flick the gear shifter, without having to use a clutch. imo, no fun to drive whatsoever!
Yeah... pussy cars.. but even still.
I know that in Victoria you can do a sort of re-test if you need to drive a manual and you only have an auto licence. It's not quite as long as a normal licence test but its still a bit of effort.
But you can't drive a manual until you're off you're P's all together here.
Its still beyond me why someone would get an auto-only licence to begin with.. I don't understand it.
Hehehe my friend has once of those, 4.0L Falcon, goes like crazy, but nothing like a manual to feel the gears kick in to make the smile wider and wider.. hehehe..
Damm i guess im gonna have to keep driving illegally for another 2 months, crap, n this is long w/end.. booo.. lol.. oh wells...
Thanks for the help matt
appreciated!
P.s - Dave, i had to get an auto licence cause i only had an auto car to practice in, my mate did his one in manual but had to for out alot of $$$ in driving lessons cause he also didn't have a manual car to practice on.
I wasn't in the position to spend that sort of $$$ at the time.
real men drive stick.
yeah after 1 year with your p's you are eligable to drive auto/manual.
But I've had some of my mates just get let off, depends if you get pulled over on a friday or saturday night sometimes there just pricks and look for anything to fuk you up sometimes they just give you a warning..
Good luck
Look on your licence . . it says nothing about what you can drive, i drive a manual, and it doesnt say anything on my licence (I'm on P1). If they pull you over and check your licence how will they know your not spose to drive a manual? Unless the auto licences say something?
That Vic rule about you can't drive manual until your finished your P's is ridiculous! What a foolish rule.

Sorry officer, I didn't realise it was a manual, I was wondering why the engine got so hot when i was going 60...........
Just make sure you don't get pulled over, usually they don't do license checks at RBTs (at least here in SA, but then i didn't get pulled over by one when i was on my Ps)
SA doesn't have any of those laws, once you pass the test, you pass the test and you can drive whatever you want (unnless its changed recently)
Nah.. in Victoria if you get pulled over for ANYTHING they have a real good look at your licence... check it against your file.. and breath test you.. mandatory.
hey is it true in Victoria, if you drive with one hand on the wheel and the other hangging out the window
you get fined??
My word it certainly is.. >$200.
Same reason you get fined for talking on a mobile when driving.. "Must have 2 hands on the wheel and full attention on the road at all times"... blah blah blah.
hahaha victorian coppers are tight as when they pull you over! especially if you're a P plater.
got my license, rego, plate, and car got given a thorough check last weekend when i got pulled over. breathalysed, checked for illegal mods, etc etc. no wonder ppl call them pigs! hahaha
I've got green neons with a sound modulator in my car.. left them on when the cops pulled my over once.. and while they didn't particularly like them they arn't illgal. (I thought they were, almost crapped myself).
Maybe they are only illegal if you can see them from outside the car.. you can distract yourself all you want.
I am glad I didn't have to go through all that crap in the states to get my license. (though I do think it is a good idea to have graduated licensing). I took my test on my 16th birthday, in an ice storm, and had no restrictions from then on. Of course that was a decade ago and they have changed things a lot since then. I guess kids under 18 cannot drive with more than one passenger now. Heh...we used to pack ten people into my friend's caddy all the time.
Good luck on whatever.

Thank you lord |

So far as I know (From my sister who got her's a couple of weeks ago (no.. no pics of sister)) You just get given it in the mail.. but this is Melbourne.. might be a little different up there.
But what's this about a log book. We get given a log book with the L's.. but they don't ask to see it when we go for licence. (Which is good cause if they checked they would want 120 Hours.. that's the figure they are always pushing, and I had only done about 100, about 40 of those in the last month.)
have a read of this page.
you have to pass a Driver Qualification Test (DQT) in NSW to get your full license.
in VIC, it is mailed out to you by VicRoads 3yrs after the day on which you passed the test to get your Ps.

If there were speed restrictions on P's in Victoria that would really suck.. I have to go 100 at least once to get anywhere.
But the conditions for getting a Licence in Victoria are:
Got L's and have held without cancelation for 6 months.
(You get it by providing ID, and doing a computer questionare)
Be atleast 18
(Then to get your P's you have to pass a practical driving test, and pass a computerised hazard perception test(which is a real bitch))
VicRoads has recently changed the conditions, you now have to pass the Hazard Perception test first, before they allow you to take the practical driving exam. this was probably because so many people were failing the hazard perception test (like dave said, its a bitch! hahaha).
drive away sunnyyy
