Thumbs down Tiesto At Avalon Boston Review

Well I just got home.My ears are still ringing.I must say that I left Avalon tonight disappointed.Subpar mixing including multiple trainwrecks and awkward transitions overshadowed a decent track selection.Tiesto proved that he is a good dj with the tracks he played but came nowhere close to justifying the 25 grand that Avalon shelled out to book him or more to the point justify a spot as number one dj in the world.I would have preferred more pure trance rather than the techy stuff but thats minor. Also I was dispointed to hear that Tiesto decided he wanted to come on at 12.I dont understand why the doors opened at 9 then.

Mixing:
Terrible (Trainwrecked in and out of "Traffic",several poor transitions and obvious mismatches)

Track Selection:
Decent

Dj Tiesto-Obsession Vs. Dallas 4PM
Dj Tiesto And BT-Love Comes Again (Mark Norman Remix)
Three Drives-Signs of The Universe
Dj Tiesto-Nyana
Dj Tiesto-Traffic (Montana Re-Edit)
Katana-In Silence (Txitxarro Remix)
Push - Electric Eclipse (Tranqua Remix)

Overall for the night it was average. It let me down with the high expectations I had

I was glad to meet Bubbleravegirl as well as Stories.I couldnt find neone else though.I hope everyone was able to get through guestlist all right and had a good time.Armin Van Buuren's set a few weeks ago put this set to shame that Tiesto spun tonight.

Ok time to pass out from a long day and night........

yea, his mixing definately wasn't what it could have been, and I suppose if I had wanted to hear most of Just Be, I could have stayed home. although a couple tracks made the place MOVE. decent nite overall, except for my hour and a half driving around Boston to find 93 North.

met DiMethGuy and Dan (didn't get his TAname), so that was good.

Damn that must have sucked really bad, Only if DJ Tiesto could have played longer then he could have rocked it hard. Hope the next DJ around blows his crap away.

tracklist update:

Love Comes Again was the original, not Mark Norman (unfortunately)
Ton TB - Dream Machine (either original or Estuera's Fairlight Distriction Remix, can't remember)
there was one track with a fast stabbing melody that he played, can't for the life of me remember the name of it, but it was my highlight of the nite.

told ya 12-2, i dont know about the 25 g's i dont know if he even made that in nyc.

Wow I met another TA... didn't even realize it at the time. Cool!

I was really suprised he didn't come back out to do another track.

tiesto's worth 5 bux. if that lol

any amateur dj can mix better then his sorry lil ass. no execuse for trainwrecks. i mean how hard is it to mix 2 fucking records at a club with a solid dj booth, theres no execuse and you people still love the guy, it makes no sense.

Posted by PvDoBseSSioN on Jun-16-2004 15:04:

wow its a good thing i decided not to go, it would have been a waste of money it seems like. its ok cause im gonna see him @ Cream Amnesia with PvD on da same nite august 5th

Posted by Greggy4202k on Jun-16-2004 15:24:

i actually thought tiesto did a good job last night....but maybe that was because i wasted off cheap ass vodka...but overall, i had a real good time seeing tiesto for the first time, the club wasn't as packed as pvd last august or as hot as oakenfold 2 years ago....anyways, a good time and good tracks

Posted by toxa on Jun-16-2004 15:28:

does he always do sub-par mixing?(this is to people who have seen him more than once)
He is a good set programmer in my opinion, but seriously i have seen him trainwreck a few times. Its acceptable to drift off once in a while and quickly fix it before the regular club goer hears it, but trainwreck is unacceptable...

Posted by GUBostonDubs on Jun-16-2004 16:07:

Paul Oakenfold did a much better job mixing last november and that set actually gains more credibility compared to the performance last night by Tiesto.

Bottom line:Tiesto shouldn't be number 1 in the world.

Lee,I think PVD is the best in the world atm.Armin Van Buuren is a close second.

And Tiesto was a jerk for not playing an encore,he just stood around mocking the crowd with a drink in his hand.Avalon should get their money back for him not going on at 11.

Haha, sorry, Dan would be me And GU I'm the one who texted you sayin thanks for the guestlist hook-up! I dunno what I was thinkin haha- -as for the night, I had a pretty decent time- my first seeing Tiesto and only like 4th ever (First was Ferry Corsten on new years, and if someone could beat the energy there I'd probly die ) Kinda sucked cuz they wouldn't let my girlfriend in cuz she's 18- also the dance floor got Waaaay too packed a coupla times, so we could barely move! Sucks that we didn't get an encore! People hung around begging for like 15 mins! Anyway, it was fun, then I got lost in Boston for about an hour tryin to get home! bubbleravegirl, were you the one with the glowsticks?? I think I saw you, but wasn't sure. Hope to see you guys in the future

meh, oaki plays shit though, his best track that night was 1000 Beautiful things.

I really enjoyed tiest's set in nyc. Alot of people take his "harsh" mixing for trainwrecks. He is the only dj that really has that style. If you dont like it don't go. IMO it really keeps the energy between tracks, where as you will notice other djs will lose a lot like armin, even if you hear a double beet once in a while its gonna happen. Yea there are good ways to swap frequences, aka pvd, but I enjoy tiestos mixing as well.

Its much more aggessive then the, "slowly fade in, ops i need to match again, snowly fade in, ops its off a bid, match again, aah thereits perfect then slowly mix."

Its just a different style. And for the record @ avalon, Tiesto did key match a few tracks, and it sounded really good. He also had a bunch of "long mixes" in and out of each other, if anyone picked that up, doubt it though.

He had no long mixes at all here.I understand what your saying with the losing of energy with mixing.Armin did that alot at Roxy in April but his mixing 3 weeks ago in Boston was almost perfect.I knew several people who had just seen Tiesto in nyc as well. They said he mixed better there for sure and the track selection was much better too.I also read about the crossfader slams from Avalon Nyc.He did that on a few mixes but overall they were pretty weak and he introduced a track at a bad time.He mixed out of tracks during a breakdown a couple of times as well.He didn't put out that much effort last night and I feel he could have done much better.I wasn't expecting him to be Sasha behind the decks but seriously that was just terrible. He had major problems beatmatching the whole night...That isnt harsh mixing that is TERRIBLE mixing. It was louie devito status at some points. It wasn't just one or two mixes either. It was basicly an entire night of shitty mixing.

Also I really think that Tiesto played a much better set the last time he was here in Boston.I have it on cd.It was a much better set, mixing wise and track selection. If he played anywhere near as good as that 10-17-02 night I would have no complaints about last night.

Agreed, Tiesto was simply off the mark last night. The track selection was decent, I was really surprised to hear Signs From The Universe there... I absolutely love that track. I also think his set back in 2002 was far superior to this one. Although it did make me happy being able to hear Love Comes Again.

As for mixing, Tiesto's beat matching was ok, but he did trainwreck at least one transition that I remember.

On a side note... is Tiesto usually not receptive to the crowd like he was yesterday? I tried to get a picture with him, but he would just hide in the DJ booth and not want to sign autographs nor get pictures taken... blah. Armin, PvD, J00F, Nick Warren, Ferry, Scott Bond, all never had that problem. Bleh, I hate Avalon's bouncers.

Pat it was nice to meet ya last night. Looks like we're on for Max Graham on Friday night as well?

He also played White Room - White Room
