Portugal x Russia (Group A, 16 June)

life or death match for us, anything other than the victory and we're fucked. russia doesn't seem like a decent opponent though, even if our team isn't working very well. i say we win

Posted by dchaves on Jun-16-2004 11:14:

I see this as a hard match. Neither Russia nor Portugal play well last Saturday... I think the result can be... 1-1

Posted by RubiK Cube on Jun-16-2004 11:44:

Portugal need to improve big time for them to win this but can see it happenning as it is a must win game now. Russia are in to much disarray with Mostovoi being sent home plus they looked bad against Spain.

2-0 Portugal

Posted by timmyboy on Jun-16-2004 12:04:

meh
1. mostovoi is overrated... now at least.. 2 years ago he was very good
2.he is too slow and slows the russian attack
3. we can pick from izmailov, loskov, alenichev, radimov in centre who are just as good

so mostovoi is not a factor

now if they only got rid of bulykin

russia 2 portugal 1

Posted by RubiK Cube on Jun-16-2004 12:47:

Its not the fact that Mostovoi has gone its the apparent friction and trouble in the Russian camp

Posted by nettwerk on Jun-16-2004 13:43:

... and Sharonov was sent off against Spain, delivering even more chaos to the russian defense. Perhaps we'll win this one. Perhaps. But 2-1 is as high as I'll bet.

Particularly since he's been sent home

Portugal 2-0 Russia

Posted by Hanki on Jun-16-2004 15:40:

If Portugal won't win this game they'll have weak chances to go through the next round...But I think, that draw will be the best result for this game, because in this situation Portugal must win in the final game against Spain! So in my opinion it's gonna be very interesting!

So Portugal - Russia 1:1

ok let me refrase that

he was never a factor in the last 2 years

Posted by CKYTEP on Jun-16-2004 17:58:

I'd go Russia 2 : 1 Portugal

this game will be perty hardcore

Posted by marcooz on Jun-16-2004 19:43:

first half: 1:0 for Portugal ....

lol to gk's red card

Posted by Blik on Jun-16-2004 19:46:

he didn't touch the ball

bad call from the ref

Posted by PacMan on Jun-16-2004 19:50:

you must have missed it, the ball stops on his arm.

keeper reaction nothing he can do about it.

and according to the rules its the correct call.

Posted by SPANIARD on Jun-16-2004 19:59:

Surprise, surprise, a nice call for the hosting team

I won't hide that I want a draw and I know that it's hard to make a call with such short amount of time, but that was disgusting. It would have been different if the whistle blew and he had the ball in his hands, but he didn't touch it at all!! I've seen it about 4 times and now Portugal are back in the tournament. It's a shame for the Russians, they were starting to grow on me before the call.

Russia a man down?

Posted by Tim81 on Jun-16-2004 20:30:

Yes Red card for the keeper in the 45th minute.
I don't think it was hands...

Posted by Sand Leaper on Jun-16-2004 20:59:

I still don't get how anyone managed to see whether the keeper touched the ball or not without watching the whole thing in slo mo repetition. Guess the jury's still out on that one..

Yet another boring game. Portugal failed to deliver to their optimum yet again against a badly crippled Russia, despite the 2-0 win. Hopefully they can sort out their positioning and player usage before the match against Spain, otherwise Greece and Spain will advance from this group.

Posted by nettwerk on Jun-16-2004 21:09:

Ufff...
The second half was dreadful, it seemed that we wer the ones with a man down. And we continue to see that Scolari cannot make substitutions: Ronaldo should have entered by halftime or at least in place of Rui Costa: we needed an attacking midfield with imagination to try and score the goal of tranquility. Pauleta should have gone out ages before he did, and Felipo still holds tight to his 4x2x3x1, when it'd pay more to play with two forwards... No matter: that is past already, and sunday, in Alvalade, 19h45, there'll be carnage in the field: Portugal X Spain. The winner will go with Greece to the quarters.

[EDIT] The cars' horns have already began sounding, to celebrate our victory, like if we had won the ECH... Sometimes I ask myself if I live in a 3rd world country...[/EDIT]

Posted by Madjer on Jun-16-2004 22:22:

yesss, at least they won

thanks to mostly FC Porto (oh man, anyone saw the diff. between Couto and Carvalho !! carv. was sooo good in def. !)

but as has been said, they could still play much better (in the offense), in the last 25min, the russians were near the KO (logic after playing 2.half only with 10p)
but the portuguese forgot to play nicely over the sides, or even forgot to shoot (Nuno!!)

Christiano however - I think he deserves to play at least one half - WHAT A NICE pass to Rui Costa who converts easily to the long awaited 2-0

Now they must beat Spain...
Though I had preferred both teams in the quarters, Greece seems to be qualified already

It was a ridiculous sending off for the keeper and very harsh.

I don't believe the ball touched his arm, but even if it did ever so slightly brush against his sleeve, so what. He was lying on his side, he rolled over onto his front and went to put both hands on the ground to get up, then realised he was about to touch the ball so he pulled his arm away. Seconds later he's walking off the pitch. I understand the referee had to make a quick decision, but his decision lacked basic common sense, what did the keeper have to gain from handling the ball there? Nothing.

One of the harshest red cards I've seen in a long time. That said, I don't think Russia were playing very well even with 11 men, you can'd begrudge Portugal their win because they did earn it. The second goal was excellent play from Rui Costa and Ronaldo and that chance that hit the post was excellent build up play as well.

Portugal v Spain is a massive game now

Posted by Genesis Evolved on Jun-17-2004 02:37:

MWUAHAHAHA!!

Part 1 of my evil masterplan - success!.

Portugal > Russia

Now I just need

England > Switzerland

The Russian must have been studying how Arsenal play cos they started to play better after the keeper was sent off and created some good chances in the second half

Posted by h0tsweetbabyd0l on Jun-17-2004 09:45:

portugal won but it was not some awesome game ...well i wanted russia win personally but i don't understand how the keeper has been sent off ....some mistake by the referee i would say since when we saw the images again there was no hand it seemed but no well that's life ....

Posted by noikeee on Jun-17-2004 11:01:

well, glad to see scolari doing all those changes. ricardo carvalho is so much better than fernando couto, and deco is so much better than rui costa, at the moment. we didn't do a great match but it was sufficient to trash an awful russian side. seriously, russia gotta be one of the weakest teams i've seen so far in the tournament, they did nothing.

about the gk sent off, the first impression i got was that he did touch the ball, but in the replays it seems that he didn't. if he actually did, i think the rules say that he has to be sent off. why? i got no idea, stupid rule, if any other player on the field touches the ball with the hand they get a yellow, why should the keeper get a red?

anyway russia was playing too bad, no way they could beat us even with 11. and the referee didn't gave us a clear penalty on the second half when the defender stepped on figo, so i don't think that it was so unballanced

Yeah I agree they were a bit better after the sending off as it was just before half time, although towards the end of the game you could see the Russian players were shattered. I don't think the Russians ever got into their stride though, the Portuguese were first to react to every ball and closing down their options constantly, a task made easier by the sending off. Couldn't really blame Russia for their long ball tactics at times, whenever they tried to surge forward in numbers they were hit on the break giving their defenders a very busy night.
