Smile be nice and help a reason noob

hey guys. i have been working with fruityloops for ages. now (today ) i got reason and i have been practicing the whole day.

everything is very unusual to me and there are many questions but for now i just want to know one thing.

i've made a bassline in c (1bar) with the matrix sequencer and i've done a string melody that goes over 16bars. now i want to adapt the bassline to the strings so it has to change its pitch every 2 bars but i dont have a clue how to do that.

if anyone understood my problem please help me. waiting for replies. thanks

Draw the notes into the sequencer rather than using the matrix.

hi i took the step from fruity to reason around 1.5 years ago

during those 1.5 years, i never used a matrix device lol..

just do what cheggy say

I like the Matrix - you can write a pattern in it, and when happy, turn off the play function in the Matrix, and copy the pattern to your track. Once its copied to the track, its very easy to modify the pattern in the sequence without having to draw the notes - since they are already there.

im a little bit embarassed. have always been put off by the sequencer because it seemed so complex to me but it works great. thanks guys

Yeah, I remember when I first got Reason I found the sequencer quite scary, all the colour and that huge grid of notes in front of me, but it's really the way to go to get a lot of control over the notes, and doesn't take that long to get used to

what you initally asked, about how to change the bassline's pitch every 2 bars can be done by simple automation:
first copy/paste the pattern from a1 to a2, then in a2, make the pitch changes you want, then do the same to a3,, a4,, etc...

now, there are two ways to change the patterns:
1. right click on the matrix pattern numbers, and click 'edit automation', then on the sequencer, draw the desired pattern number for each section.

2. click on the matrix sequencer track so that the input icon will appear next to it, click record, click play when ready,, and change the pattern real time,, when you finish, press stop and the automation will be there.

ofcourse you can also do what hey cheggy suggested and draw the patterns directly on the main sequencer instead of the matrix (i prefer the matrix for simple melodies/basslines).

all in all, enjoy!

thanks psy, that was my primal question. in spite of everything i use the sequencer now. i think its more efficient to work with.
