England x Switzerland (Group B, 17 June)

Switzerland looked solid in their first match, so I don't expect this to be a walk-over for England. Would love an upset

Prediction: England 2-1 Switzerland

Posted by Dj Smitty20 on Jun-17-2004 06:36:

anything but a 2 goal victory will be a little unnerving. But as long as they win, that's all that matters. England have a history of blowing 1 nill leads against great teams, but have an even worse record for playing like shite against b or c class teams.

We'll see...I think England will win 2-0 or maybe 3-1. Owen and Rooney should light it up. If England lose, I'll be the first one admitting they don't deserve to be in Portugal.

Switzerland looked boring in there first match and did hardly anything going forward so im not worried at all about what they can do. What i am worried about is the fact that Eriksson is going to play the diamond in midfield but i still think we will have too much for the swiss

3-0 England

2-0

the Swiss were bad, and the English played a good match against France

3 - 0 England. I think we will have too much for them, espescially in midfield. It might take a bit of time to break down the Swiss, they're going to put a lot of numbers back and try to frustrate us in the first half but we just have to be patient because the chances will come.

going to be easy for england. i say 2-0

exactly my thoughts, it's always harder to play a team who're trying to stop you scoring than one who're trying to score themselves

should be an easy match for england. I'm just a bit curious about it's offensive potential

prediction:
England - Switzerland 2:0

Posted by ebeneezer_goode on Jun-17-2004 13:25:

i predict 2 - 1 to england, they played VERY good against france but i feel that tonight they may have a bit too much pressure, they will still win but may feel the heat

Posted by mentalbarter on Jun-17-2004 14:13:

3-0
beckham scores penalty and owen scores too to silence critics

oh yes, you were very unlucky in the last match. Zidane is a football-god, without him, France would have lost this match. Anyway, i am sure you will take along 3 points this evening.

2-0 England (god I hope so)

Owen and Beckham with the goals

Posted by Romain on Jun-17-2004 15:18:

i'ld bet on 1-1, or 2-1 for England

Posted by Plastick on Jun-17-2004 15:57:

Me bet on Swiss on asian handicap.

Posted by Genesis Evolved on Jun-17-2004 16:29:

YAY, bet on Rooney as first goalscorer..

Someone please score on a penalty

Posted by Plastick on Jun-17-2004 17:40:

OMG 10 men swiss down 3-0...

Posted by Trance(PL) on Jun-17-2004 17:43:

Undisciplined swiss side, 2 Euro 2004 games and both games they down to 10 men what a waste.

Posted by DRM on Jun-17-2004 17:50:

Very frustrating to watch at time. England played too deep and just looked lazy and tired, giving away too many free kicks but that was partly to do with the swiss falling over and the ref being wank. But overall we've gotta be pretty happy with that result

Bring on Croatia

Ya, good score, way off my prediction but then wadda i know

the performance wasnt brilliant but then again the weather was scortching, lets hope they beat croatia!

and we all know that'll be tough

Poor performance from England imo, they played better against France, England won by 3 goals to none, so imagine what France are gonna do to the Swiss team . . .

Scholes was weak, does he really deserve to be out there from the start?
Even thou i am a Man Utd fan, i still think Scholes needs to make way for someone else now.

Beckham as captain? He is not showing enough control over the England side, as captain he should make sure that Rooney does not get into the confrontations that get him those yellow cards.
Rooney is one man England can not afford to be without in any of thier games.

At least Owen showed a litte more effort in tonights game and they did not bring on Heskey.
Heskey should be put out to grass where he will be at home with all the other donkeys.

England usually play to the level of their competition. No offence to the Swiss, but they're an undisciplined, unimaginative team. The score could have been easily 5 or 6 nill. Wayne Rooney is the next English superstar guaranteed.

David James still makes me uncomfortable...I don't like his positioning on free kicks and corners and he is too tentative when judging when to go in the air to intercept a cross coming into the box. That could cost us later in the tournament. Michael Owen is proving to be highly overrated...I say start Vassel next game..he is quicker and far more tenacious.

Anyway, good result...a draw against the Croats will assure advancement.

3-0 cant complain,
its a win,
bring on croatia

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-17-2004 22:28:

I'm not really sure what to make of this performance. Half of me is happy that we won 3-0 without ever really getting into second gear, but the other half is concerned that the Swiss really exposed our weakness in defending set-pieces.

Vassell is staking a good claim for Owen's place, but you know that when Owen is on form he is a much better player. A difficult dilemma for Eriksson, but as he rarely changes his lineup I think he'll go with Owen against Croatia. I would possibly go for Vassell but it's not an easy decision.

People criticised Beckham a little harshly against France, I thought he was decent then and let's not forget he provided an awesome cross for Lampard's goal. Today his delivery was always top class, he set up the first goal by picking out Owen, who did well to pick out Rooney. Even when Beckham is playing very badly it's hard to take him off because you know he can win you the match with one brilliant cross. As a Newcastle fan I have seen this with Laurent Robert, he was on very poor form when we played PSV Eindhoven, over the two legs he did little, but in a few moments of brilliance he assisted all three of our goals to win us the tie.

I can't think of a better captain than Beckham I'm afraid, Gerrard is too inexperienced at this level. Sol Campbell is the only possible alternative in my view, he is calm in difficult situations, experienced and a very reliable player.

Scholes really didn't look right today, plodding around and looking very unhappy, and just like in the France game he seemed out of sync with the rest of the team. Again it's difficult to drop a big name player like him because you know you are leaving a serious talent on the bench but he is just not worth his place in midfield at the moment. I hope he proves me wrong but I would drop him and go for Hargreaves or Dyer on the left, or try Ashley Cole there with Wayne Bridge behind him. We need a bit more potency on that side of the field and Scholes has looked half asleep in the last two games.
