It's something to do with Ireland

Posted by Mr.Mystery on Jun-20-2004 13:04:

FFS, there's no need to start a new thread about every damn detail of a tune.

FFS, there is no need to complain about multiple threads

Posted by A.J. on Jun-20-2004 13:18:

No, I agree with Mr Mystery.

Why start a new thread when there's a thread on A Tear In The Open that is 10 threads below this one on the page?

It's a bit of a waste.........

Posted by stamper on Jun-20-2004 13:32:

Yeah it's Irish.

Why couldn't this question be asked in the thread 10 down?

Posted by DigitalPain on Jun-20-2004 13:55:

ladies keep your panties on

i didnt see the other thread, otherwise i would have asked there. if need be delete this thread!

just shut up. he didnt 'copy' anything. had he 'copied' there would be several 'copy'right lawsuits in action. he may have taken influences from it, as nothing happens in a vacuum, but he did not 'copy'. dats y i hate people who insist that tiesto iz a crapy produzer.

I like Walkin on coulds more !

if u didnt hear the interview, the language is from the 1500s, in Ireland, when women came together to mourn the loss of their husbands who were fighting in a war... the lyrics are takin from a song they used to sing when they would come together. -Or sumthin like that LOL

you people are worse then the ones that say tiesto wrecks every second. This is one of the better tracks on the album. It sounded amazing in a club.

The vocals are GEALIC! im not sure if its Scottish Gealic or Irish,im pretty sure its Scottish.A scottish traditional group called Cappercailie sang these vocals ages ago on a cd that my sister has from a few years back,im not sure if that group wrote the song or if its a traditional song that they sing but there you go.The woman that sings in teh group used to live about 10 mins out of town and her neice is goign out wi one of my mates, maybe i could get him to ask her one day!

Obviously with plenty time on my hands - I was doing a bit of googling and found some info on this track.

The original song was written in 1788 by Annie Campbell. She was supposed to be married with sea-captain Allan Morrison, but he and his crew sailed into a storm and sank onto the way to see her.
She wrote and dedicated the song "AILENN DUINN" [Dark Allan] to him - and she died a few months later - her body found washed ashore right where Allan was found a few months before.

It is indeed in Gaelic and the rendition by Capercaillie is slightly different.

There is also a play based on this song and story, written by Tormod Domhnallach.

The lyrics to the actual song - the lines in bold are the ones that we know of [Cura Me, A Tear in The Open, etc] :

Gura mise tha fo islean
Moch sa' mhadainn is mi 'g irigh

 h, shiubhalainn leat...
H r bh, h r bh
H r bh, h rinn h
Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat

Ma 's e 'n cluasag dhut a ghaineamh
Ma 's e leabaidh dhut an gheamainn

 h, shiubhalainn leat...
H r bh, h r bh
H r bh, h rinn h
Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat

Ma 's en t-iasg do choinlean geala
Ma 's na rin do luchd-faire

 h, shiubhalainn leat...
H r bh, h r bh
H r bh, h rinn h
Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat

Dh'lainn deoch ge boil le cch e
D dh'fhuil do choim 's tu 'n
Didh do bhathadh...

 h, shiubhalainn leat...
H r bh, h r bh
H r bh, h rinn h
Ailein Duinn, h shiubhalainn leat

English Translation:

How sorrowful I am
When I rise early in the morning,
h I would walk with you.
H ri bh.... o h,
Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you

If the sand be your pillow,
If the seaweed be your bed,
h I would walk with you
H ri bh.... o h,
Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you

If the fish are your candles bright,
If the seals are your watchmen,
h I would walk with you
H ri bh.... o h,
Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you

I would take a drink, though everyone would be scandalised,
Of your heart's blood after you were drowned...
h I would walk with you
H ri bh.... o h,
Brown-haired Alan, h, I would walk with you.
